The analysis of the ratios of entropy and enthalpy characteristics and their contributions to the change in the Gibbs energy of intermolecular interactions of crown ethers and cyclodextrins with amino acids is carried out. Two different types of macrocycles were chosen for examination: crown ethers with a hydrophilic interior and cyclodextrins with a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic exterior. The thermodynamics of complex formation of crown ethers and cyclodextrins with amino acids in water and aqueous-organic solvents of variable composition was examined. The contributions of the entropy solvation of complexes of 18-crown-6 with glycine, alanine, phenylalanine to the change in the entropy of complexation in water-ethanol and water-dimethyl sulfoxide solvents was calculated and analyzed. It was found that the ratios of the entropy and enthalpy solvation of the reagents for these systems have similar trends when moving from water to aqueous-organic mixtures. The relationship between the thermodynamic characteristics and structural features of the complexation processes between cyclodextrins and amino acids has been established. The thermodynamic enthalpy–entropy compensation effect was revealed, and its features for complexation of cyclodextrins and 18-crown-6 were considered. It was concluded that, based on the thermodynamic parameters of molecular complexation, one could judge the mode of the formation of complexes, the main driving forces of the interactions, and the degree of desolvation.

In this study, a novel model of entropy generation effects measured in the Cu-blood flow of a nanofluid under the effect of ciliary-oriented motion is proposed. The effects of viscous dissipation are also taken into account. The physical model was composed with the incorporation of a low Reynolds number and long-wavelength phenomena. The exact solutions for the axial velocity, temperature and pressure gradient distribution were achieved successfully. Key findings are presented through a strategy of plotting the significant factors affecting the physical quantities of the stream. It was found that the heat absorption parameter and Brownian motion accounted for the large thermal transfer rate, while the effect of entropy was minimal compared to these factors in the center of the flow but increased on the walls in the case of Cu-blood flow. It can also be added that a more intense flow gave rise to the entropy effects. This study may be helpful in medical science as cilia play vital roles, which include cell migration and external fluid transport, in human tissues and some key organs. Moreover, the considered annulus-shaped geometry gives vital readings that are used in medical equipment such as endoscopes.

Abstract A multitude of studies show the relevance of both inflectional paradigms (word form frequency distributions, i.e., inflectional entropy) and inflectional classes (whole class frequency distributions) for visual lexical processing. Their interplay has also been proven significant, measured as the difference between paradigm and class frequency distributions (relative entropy). Relative entropy effects have now been recorded in nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositional phrases. However, all of these studies used visual stimuli – either written words or picture-naming tasks. The goal of our study is to test whether the effects of relative entropy can also be captured in the auditory modality. Forty young native speakers of Romanian (60% female) living in Serbia as part of the Romanian ethnic minority participated in an auditory lexical decision task. Stimuli were 168 Romanian verbs from two inflectional classes. Verbs were presented in four forms: present and imperfect 1st person singular, present 3rd person plural, and imperfect 2nd person plural. The results show that relative entropy influences both response accuracy and response latency. We discuss alternative operationalizations of relative entropy and how they can help us test hypotheses about the structure of the mental lexicon.

AbstractThe nano heat transport has gained much significance in recent era. The micro-level devices are enganged succssfully in diverse fields like electronics, biomedical, navel structures, manufacturing, transportation, and automotive industries in order to improve the heat transfer for cooling and heating. Owing to this fact, the current article illustrates the features of irreversibility and thermal jump in peristaltic transport of hybrid nanoliquid. Here, water is used as base liquid while nanoparticles include polystyrene and graphene oxide. The flow is carried out in a non-uniform channel where the walls of channel flexible nature. Additionally, magnetic field impacts on flow and Joule heating analysis are examined. The aspect featuring heat absorption is introduced. Nanoparticle's shapes effect is also incorporated in flow analysis. Under the consideration of small Rynold number and long wavelength, the relevent equations are reduced by implementing non-dimensional variables. Involved pertinent parameters influence the peristaltic flow characteristics are displayed graphically and discussed concisely. The result indicates that temperature curves are dominant for pure water as compared to P/water nanofluid and P-GO/water hybrid nanofluid. Moreover, the convergent channel shows least entropy effects and extreme effects are noted for divergent case whereas uniform channel stays behind the divergent one.

AbstractSpeech input is often understood to trigger rapid and automatic activation of successively higher-level representations for comprehension of words. Here we show evidence from magnetoencephalography that incremental processing of speech input is limited when words are heard in isolation as compared to continuous speech. This suggests a less unified and automatic process than is often assumed. We present evidence that neural effects of phoneme-by-phoneme lexical uncertainty, quantified by cohort entropy, occur in connected speech but not isolated words. In contrast, we find robust effects of phoneme probability, quantified by phoneme surprisal, during perception of both connected speech and isolated words. This dissociation rules out models of word recognition in which phoneme surprisal and cohort entropy are common indicators of a uniform process, even though these closely related information-theoretic measures both arise from the probability distribution of wordforms consistent with the input. We propose that phoneme surprisal effects reflect automatic access of a lower level of representation of the auditory input (e.g., wordforms) while cohort entropy effects are task-sensitive, driven by a competition process or a higher-level representation that is engaged late (or not at all) during the processing of single words.

Anticipating the future is essential for efficient perception and action planning. Yet the role of anticipation in event segmentation is understudied because empirical research has focused on retrospective cues such as surprise. We address this concern in the context of perception of musical-phrase boundaries. A computational model of cognitive sequence processing was used to control the information-dynamic properties of tone sequences. In an implicit, self-paced listening task ( N = 38), undergraduates dwelled longer on tones generating high entropy (i.e., high uncertainty) than on those generating low entropy (i.e., low uncertainty). Similarly, sequences that ended on tones generating high entropy were rated as sounding more complete ( N = 31 undergraduates). These entropy effects were independent of both the surprise (i.e., information content) and phrase position of target tones in the original musical stimuli. Our results indicate that events generating high entropy prospectively contribute to segmentation processes in auditory sequence perception, independently of the properties of the subsequent event.

: This article presents an overview of recent computational studies dedicated to the analysis of binding between galectins and small-molecule ligands. We first present a summary of the most popular simulation techniques adopted for calculating binding poses and binding energies, and then discuss relevant examples reported in the literature for the three main classes of galectins (dimeric, tandem and chimera). We show that simulation of galectin-ligand interactions is a mature field which has proven invaluable for completing and unraveling experimental observations. Future perspectives to further improve the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of existing computational approaches will involve the development of new schemes to account for solvation and entropy effects, which represent the main current limitations to the accuracy of computational results.

The concept of “high entropy” was first proposed while exploring the unknown center of the metal alloy phase diagram, and then expanded to oxides. The colossal dielectric constant found on the bulk high-entropy oxides (HEOs) reveals the potential application of the high-entropy oxides in the dielectric aspects. Despite the fact that known HEO thin films have not been reported in the field of dielectric properties so far, with the high-entropy effects and theoretical guidance of high entropy, it is predictable that they will be discovered. Currently, researchers are verifying that appropriately increasing the oxygen content in the oxide, raising the temperature and raising the pressure during preparation have an obvious influence on thin films’ resistivity, which may be the guidance on obtaining an HEO film large dielectric constant. Finally, it could composite a metal–insulator–metal capacitor, and contribute to sensors and energy storage devices’ development; alternatively, it could be put into application in emerging thin-film transistor technologies, such as those based on amorphous metal oxide semiconductors, semiconducting carbon nanotubes, and organic semiconductors.
