Few studies have focused on gem-quality tourmaline acting as a petrogenetic recorder, and the colour genesis of pink elbaite is still controversial. We carry out in situ major, trace element and boron isotope composition analyses on a single tourmaline crystal. This crystal is characterized by sudden transformation from colourless to pink, which can represent full pegmatite magma evolution. According to the analysis results, all spots are divided into alkali groups according to X-site occupancy and subdivided into elbaite series. The pink part accommodates higher concentrations of volatile and incompatible elements. The result is most consistent with successive pegmatite evolution in which the colourless part crystallized from the early stage, while the pink part crystallized from the late stage. The relatively consistent δ11B value between the colourless and the pink part suggests no fluid exsolution occurred during pegmatite evolution. The slight increase of δ11B values within the pink part and the colourless part may be due to mica crystallization. The combination of (Li++Mn2+) (Al3++Xvac)-1 and the exclusive positive linear relationship of Mn2+ vs. Ti4+ indicate that Mn2+ is the main cause of pink, while Mn2+-Ti4+ intervalence charge transfer also plays an important role.

Careful optimization of the reaction conditions provided access to the particularly small tetraruthenium macrocycle 2Ru2Ph-Croc, which is composed out of two redox-active divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium entities {Ru}-1,4-CH=CH-C6H4-CH=CH-{Ru} (Ru2Ph; {Ru} = Ru(CO)Cl(PiPr3)2) and two likewise redox-active and potentially non-innocent croconate linkers. According to single X-ray diffraction analysis, the central cavity of 2Ru2Ph-Croc is shielded by the bulky PiPr3 ligands, which come into close contact. Cyclic voltammetry revealed two pairs of split anodic waves in the weakly ion pairing CH2Cl2/NBu4BArF24 (BArF24 = [B{C6H3(CF3)2-3,5}4]- electrolyte, while the third and fourth waves fall together in CH2Cl2 / NBu4PF6. The various oxidized forms were electrogenerated and scrutinized by IR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. This allowed us to assign the individual oxidations to the metal-organic Ru2Ph entities within 2Ru2Ph-Croc, while the croconate ligands remain largely uninvolved. The lack of specific NIR bands that could be assigned to intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) in the mono- and trications indicates that these mixed-valent species are strictly charge-localized. 2Ru2Ph-Croc is hence an exemplary case, where stepwise IR band shifts and quite sizable redox splittings between consecutive one-electron oxidations would, on first sight, point to electronic coupling, but are exclusively due to electrostatic and inductive effects. This makes 2Ru2Ph-Croc a true “pretender”.

Corundum primary deposits in Greece occur in four locations: Paranesti in Drama and Gorgona in Xanthi, both belonging to the wider Rhodope Massif, as well as, Ikaria island and Kinidaros in Naxos island, both belonging to Attic-Cycladic Massif. Eight samples were examined with spectroscopic methods (FTIR, UV-Vis, EDXRF) in order to better characterize these four primary deposits: two pink sapphires from Paranesti, a pink and a blue sapphire from Gorgona, two blue sapphires from Ikaria and three blue sapphires from Kinidaros. Under the microscope, all samples present characteristics linked to post-crystallization deformation, decreasing their gem quality. The FTIR absorption spectra of all samples present in different relative intensities, bands of boehmite, diaspore, goethite, mica and/or chlorite inclusions and CO2 in fluid inclusions. Boehmite and diaspore inclusions are most likely epigenetic. In the UV-Vis spectra, the pink color of the samples is linked with Cr3+ absorptions and the blue color with absorptions due to Fe2+-Ti4+ intervalence charge transfer. EDXRF analyses in the studied samples show relatively high titanium and iron concentrations that are related with mineral inclusions. Gallium is slightly variable in samples from different regions; also, different colored samples from Gorgona present diverse gallium content.

AbstractIn this work we report the white light emission in transparent Cr:YAG ceramic pellet upon irradiation with focused beam of CW infrared laser diode. It was found that this phenomenon is specifically related to interaction of laser beam with a surface of the pellet. The white light was emitted outside an irradiated spot at the surface of the pellet and did not penetrate inside the pellet. Moreover, the red emission related to two-photon absorption along the laser beam penetrating the Cr3+:YAG pellet was observed. Interaction of the laser beam with the surface of the pellet leads to an efficient white light emission from an outer side of the pellet. The resulting white light emission did not entry back the pellet. Multiphoton ionization leading to intervalence charge transfer followed by light emission was proposed as the mechanism of experimentally observed white light emission.
