AbstractThe fundamental relationships between the structure and properties of liquids are far from being well understood. For instance, the structural origins of many liquid anomalies still remain unclear, but liquid-liquid transitions (LLT) are believed to hold a key. However, experimental demonstrations of LLTs have been rather challenging. Here, we report experimental and theoretical evidence of a second-order-like LLT in molten tin, one which favors a percolating covalent bond network at high temperatures. The observed structural transition originates from the fluctuating metallic/covalent behavior of atomic bonding, and consequently a new paradigm of liquid structure emerges. The liquid structure, described in the form of a folded network, bridges two well-established structural models for disordered systems, i.e., the random packing of hard-spheres and a continuous random network, offering a large structural midground for liquids and glasses. Our findings provide an unparalleled physical picture of the atomic arrangement for a plethora of liquids, shedding light on the thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies of liquids but also entailing far-reaching implications for studying liquid polyamorphism and dynamical transitions in liquids.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) capture has become of great importance for industrial processes due to the adverse environmental effects of gas emissions. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been studied as an alternative to traditional technologies, especially due to their potential to overcome the practical limitations of conventional polymeric and inorganic membranes. In this work, the effect of using different ionic liquids (ILs) with the stable metal–organic framework (MOF) ZIF-8 was evaluated. Several IL@ZIF-8 composites and IL@ZIF-8 MMMs were prepared to improve the selective CO2 sorption and permeation over other gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrogen (N2). Different ILs and two distinct loadings were prepared to study not only the effect of IL concentration, but also the impact of the IL structure and affinity towards a specific gas mixture separation. Single gas sorption studies showed an improvement in CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivities, compared with the ones for the pristine ZIF-8, increasing with IL loading. In addition, the prepared IL@ZIF-8 MMMs showed improved CO2 selective behavior and mechanical strength with respect to ZIF-8 MMMs, with a strong dependence on the intrinsic IL CO2 selectivity. Therefore, the selection of high affinity ILs can lead to the improvement of CO2 selective separation for IL@ZIF-8 MMMs.

We investigated the kinematic viscosity and electrical resistivity of the multicomponent Fe74Cu1Nb1.5Mo1.5B8.5Si13.5 melt during three heating–cooling cycles. The temperature dependence of kinematic viscosity and electrical resistivity have the anomalous zones in the same temperature range and they are associated with the liquid–liquid structure transition (LLST). The anomalies were explained by changes in the activation energy and the cluster size. As the cluster size decreases, the activation energy decreases, but the viscosity and electrical resistance increase. LLST begins with the cluster dissolution, and as a result, the Arrhenius plot becomes nonlinear in the transition temperature range. After three cycles of heating–cooling, the temperature dependences of the kinematic viscosity and electrical resistance did not qualitatively change, and this allows us to conclude that LLST is thermoreversible. With an increase in the number of thermal cycles, the activation energy of viscous flow decreases, as well as the onset temperature and temperature range of LLST.

Liquid storage tanks are lifeline structures and strategically very important. Heavy damages or even collapse of these facilities subjected to strong earthquakes may cause disastrous consequences. In this paper, the seismic response of a multistage series liquid storage tank was simulated by a finite element method and verified by a scaled-down experiment. The structural flexibility of the tank and the liquid-structure coupling characteristics between the liquid and tank wall were considered in the research. A multimass-block and spring model was employed to be equivalent to the longitudinal vibration of the liquid in the storage tank. The relationships between the connection springs and the elements of the stiffness matrix were explicitly deduced. The seismic response analysis of a four-stage series liquid tank was carried out, and the acceleration response, the stress response of the tank, and the vertical vibration of the liquid were obtained. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results, which verifies the effectiveness of the modeling method in this paper.
