In this study, a new antimicrobial agent was developed through a synthesis of Fe3O4/SiO2/Ag double nanocomposites using the sol–gel method. The prepared samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, FTIR, UV-Vis, VSM, and antibacterial test. The data analysis results for the Fe3O4/SiO2/Ag composites showed that Fe3O4, SiO2, and Ag constructed respective spinel cubic, orthorhombic, and amorphous structures in nanometric size. The saturation magnetization of Fe3O4/SiO2/Ag nanocomposites decreased due to the increase in the Ag content. Interestingly, the Fe3O4/SiO2/Ag nanocomposites presented excellent microbial activity. Ag deposition on the Fe3O4/SiO2 surface enhanced the antimicrobial activity of nanocomposites because Ag oxidized to Ag[Formula: see text] ion to produce a toxic effect in the cells of microorganisms. Furthermore, the Ag[Formula: see text] ion created the –S–Ag bond chain and deactivated the microorganism cells. Furthermore, surface plasmon resonance of Ag had an impact on the formation of photo-induced electrons, which produced superoxide radical anions, [Formula: see text]O2− generating a collapsing force that causes the death of microorganisms.

Background: Red mamey fruit known as P. sapota, comes from trees found in Mesoamerica and Asia. This fruit is considered a nutraceutical food due to it’s a food and has multiple beneficial health including anti-amyloidogenic activity and potential anti-tumorigenic property. Red mamey fruit contain a variety of carotenoids including novel ketocarotenoids such as sapotexanthin and cryptocapsin. A ketocarotenoid is a chemical compound with a carbonyl group present in the β-ring or in the double bond chain of a carotenoid. In red mamey, the 3'-deoxy-k-end group in sapotexanthin has proved to be an important pro-vitamin A source, which is essential for maintaining a healthy vision and cognitive processes. Objective: Summarize the chemistry and biological activity of the studied carotenoids present in this fruit until now. Method: An exhaustive extraction is the most usual methodology to isolate and thoroughly characterize the carotenoids present in this fruit. High performance liquid chromatography is used to determine the profile of total carotenoid and its purity. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization is used to determine the molecular weight of carotenoid. Nuclear magnetic resonance is used to determine the structure of carotenoids. Result: For each 100 g of fresh weight, 0.12 mg of total carotenoid from this fruit can be obtained. Out of the more than 47 reported carotenoids in red mamey, only 34 have a detailed characterization. Conclusion: it is important to continue studying the chemical composition and biological activity of this unique tropical fruit with commercial and nutritional value.

Titanate-based bonding agents are a class of efficient bonding agents for improving the mechanical properties of composite solid propellants, a kind of special composite material. However, high solid contents often deteriorate the rheological properties of propellant slurry, which limits the application of bonding agents. To solve this problem, a series of long-chain alkyl chelated titanate binders, N-n-octyl-N, N-dihydroxyethyl-lactic acid-titanate (DLT-8), N-n-dodecyl-N, N-dihydroxyethyl-lactic acid-titanate (DLT-12), N-n-hexadecyl-N, N-Dihydroxyethyl-lactic acid-titanate (DLT-16), were designed and synthesized in the present work. The infrared absorption spectral changes of solid propellants caused by binder coating and adhesion degrees of the bonding agents on the oxidant surface were determined by micro-infrared microscopy (MIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively, to characterize the interaction properties of the bonding agents with oxidants, ammonium perchlorate (AP) and hexogen (RDX), in solid propellants. The further application tests suggest that the bonding agents can effectively interact with the oxidants and effectively improve the mechanical and rheological properties of the four-component hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) composite solid propellants containing AP and RDX. The agent with longer bond chain length can improve the rheological properties of the propellant slurry more significantly, and the propellant of the best mechanical properties was obtained with DLT-12, consistent with the conclusion obtained in the interfacial interaction study. Our work has provided a new method for simultaneously improving the processing performance and rheological properties of propellants and offered an important guidance for the bonding agent design.

For protonated H3PO4 clusters, the Eigen–Zundel–Eigen mechanism is enhanced by fluctuations in the H-bond chain length and local-dielectric environment, and can proceed without the reorientation of H3PO4 molecules as in the case of neat liquid H3PO4.
