This study provides a novel method to prepare metal-ceramic composites from magnetically selected iron ore using microwave heating. By introducing three different microwave susceptors (Activated Carbon, SiC, and a mixture of Activated Carbon and SiC) during the microwave process, effective control of the ratio of metallic and ceramic phases has been achieved easily. The effects of the three susceptors on the microstructure of the metal-ceramics and the related reaction mechanisms were also investigated in detail. The results show that the metal phase (Fe) and ceramic phase (Fe2SiO4, FeAl2O4) can be maintained, but the metal phase to ceramic phase changed significantly. In particular, the microstructures appeared as well-distributed nanosheet structures with diameters of ~400 nm and thicknesses of ~20 nm when SiC was used as the microwave susceptor.

Abstract Background Patients with immunodeficiency-associated antibody disorders are at a higher risk of prolonged/persistent COVID-19 infection, having no viable treatment options. Methods A retrospective analysis of patients with primary and/or secondary immunodeficiency-associated antibody disorders who received casirivimab and imdevimab (REGEN-COV ®) under emergency compassionate use. Objectives describe safety and response to REGEN-COV, focusing on the subset of patients who had COVID-19 duration ≥21 days before treatment. Results Quantitative (change in oxygenation status and/or viral load) and/or qualitative (physician-reported clinical status) patient outcomes data are reported from 64 patients who received REGEN-COV. Improvement in ≥1 outcome was observed in 90.6% of the overall patient group. Thirty-seven of these had COVID-19 duration ≥21 days before treatment; median time from diagnosis to REGEN-COV was 60.5 days. Of the 29 patients with COVID-19 duration ≥21 days before treatment and available outcome data, 96.6% showed improvement in ≥1 outcome. In the 14 patients with post-treatment RT-PCR results available, 11 (78.6%) reported a negative RT-PCR following treatment, with 5 (45.5%) reporting a negative RT-PCR within 5 days and 8 (72.7%) within 21 days of treatment. Ten of 85 patients (11.8%) experienced serious adverse events, only one was an infusion-related reaction, possibly related to REGEN-COV. Two deaths were reported, neither were attributed to REGEN-COV. Conclusions In this retrospective analysis of immunodeficient patients granted REGEN-COV under the compassionate use program, REGEN-COV treatment was associated with rapid viral clearance and clinical improvement in patients with long-standing COVID-19. Adverse events were consistent with COVID-19 and its associated complications, and due to patients’ concurrent medical conditions.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis is a severe, usually drug-related reaction, characterized by an acute onset of mainly small non-follicular pustules on an erythematous base. Most cases of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) clear quickly with a systemic corticosteroid, but severe or recalcitrant cases may need other systemic therapies. In this case, a man in his 40 s with a history of psoriasis consulted a physician about widespread erythema, pustules, target lesions, and fever after the administration of a quadruple antituberculosis drug. Routine laboratory testing revealed elevated white blood cell count and C-reactive protein. The histopathology showed subcorneal pustules, spongiosis as well as lymphocyte and eosinophils infiltration in the dermis. The patient was diagnosed with definitive AGEP according to the diagnostic score from the EuroSCAR study. Cutaneous lesions especially pustules and erythema multiforme-like lesions on the upper arms and palms are crucial for distinguishing AGEP from Generalized pustular psoriasis. The patient was treated with secukinumab as a result of his failure to respond to topical corticosteroids and constrain of systemic steroids. Remission with secukinumab therapy was safe without increased risks of infections. This case indicates that secukinumab is a potential therapy that can rapidly improve the clinical symptoms of AGEP.

Introduction: Bullous haemorrhagic dermatosis is a rare clinical disorder which is usually related to a treatment with unfractionated heparin (UFH) or low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), characterized by multiple intra-epidermal haemorrhages distant from the site of injection. Presentation of Case: A 62-year-old male patient with coronary heart disease who received heparin treatment experienced several tense, haemorrhagic bullae located on the right arm area, close to the injection site, and followed by the formation of several hematomas on his back trunk 2 days after he had received UFH. The lesions regressed after discontinuation of heparin and supportive topical treatments. Discussion: The lesions in this patient have similar characteristic with heparin-induced skin necrosis and demonstrate thrombocytopenia probably related to heparin. There are some proposed hypotheses of pathophysiology which include hypersensitivity reaction and idiosyncratic dose-related reaction. Given the clinically course, the discontinuation of heparin treatment was essential for lesion regression in addition other supportive measures. Conclusion: Heparin-induced skin lesions may indicate the presence of life-threatening heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. An early diagnosis is crucial to enable discontinuation of heparin if required.

Three formulations of amphotericin B are available: liposomal, lipid complex and conventional. The liposomal amphotericin B is more preferred agent than other formulations because of its tolerability, safety and potent antifungal activity. However, the liposomal amphotericin B can cause infusion-related reactions. In this case report, we aimed to report a patient who developed infusion-related reactions during the treatment with the liposomal amphotericin B but eventually tolerated the prolonged infusion. In this case report, we present a patient who developed an infusion-related reaction during The liposomal amphotericin B treatment. A 26-year-old male patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia was hospitalized for the third course of chemotherapy. Due to the invasive fungal infection history in previous hospitalizations, the liposomal amphotericin B 400 mg (IV, 5 mg/kg) once daily was initiated as secondary antifungal prophylaxis. Swelling in infusion site and chest pain were reported within 10 minutes of the liposomal amphotericin B administration, and the infusion rate was slowed down to 400 mg/6 hours from 400 mg/2 hours. All these reactions disappeared with prolonged infusion time. The patient received a total of 7 liposomal amphotericin B doses subsequently without any reaction during the chemotherapy cycle. In our experience, the liposomal amphotericin B-induced infusion-related reactions can be resolved by prolonging the infusion time.

The main objective of the article is to develop the concept of flock fragmentation and the averaging method for the application of electrocoagulation in the process of treating wastewater from coke ovens. The designed solution was part of an innovative system for the coke oven wastewater treatment process. The system is dedicated to removing the hazardous elements and compounds from wastewater from leaching ashes in municipal waste incineration plants. The design of the process and its automatization was based on a quantitative simulation method. The balance equations of mass, energy, and momentum of transport, complemented by the kinetics of the related reaction, are used during the calculation of the process. The main result achieved is a practical solution—the reactor’s scheme, classified due to a patent procedure in the Polish Patent Office.

We report a case of vancomycin-induced thrombocytopenia (VIT) with rapid onset after re-exposure to vancomycin. A 58-year-old man with cellulitis was initiated on vancomycin. Approximately 1 hour into the vancomycin infusion, the patient developed an infusion-related reaction. Vancomycin infusion was stopped. A complete blood count obtained 4 hours after discontinuation of the vancomycin infusion revealed a platelet count of 31 ×109/L. Investigations ruled out likely causes of thrombocytopenia. VIT was diagnosed based on clinical symptoms and confirmed with drug-dependent platelet antibody testing. Without complications, platelet counts recovered within 7 days after discontinuation of vancomycin. No correlation between vancomycin level and VIT was observed.
