Purpose: Youth and young adults are particularly vulnerable to the socio-economic impacts of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19). The purpose of this study was to explore barriers to school and employment for youth with and without a disability during the pandemic. Methods: This qualitative comparison study involved in-depth interviews with 35 youth and young adults (18 with a disability; 17 without), aged 16–29 (mean age 23). An interpretive, thematic analysis of the transcripts was conducted. Results: Our findings revealed several similarities and some differences between youth and young adults with and without disabilities regarding barriers to school and employment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Key themes related to these barriers involved: (1) difficult transition to online school and working from home (i.e., the expense of setting up a home office, technical challenges, impact on mental health), (2) uncertainty about employment (i.e., under-employment, difficult working conditions, difficulty finding work, disability-related challenges) and (3) missed career development opportunities (i.e., canceled or reduced internships or placements, lack of volunteer opportunities, uncertainties about career pathway, the longer-term impact of the pandemic). Conclusion: Our findings highlight that youth and young adults with disabilities may need further support in engaging in meaningful and accessible vocational activities that align with their career pathway.

Abstract Aim The ‘Making the Leap’ interactive online course (MTL) was specifically designed to be delivered during the COVID-19 restrictions. This course aimed to facilitate the difficult transition from CT to ST3 in Plastic Surgery. Method The courses consisted of interactive small-group tutorials, each conducted over 2 days, via Zoom, covering 12 plastic surgery core topics in 8 tutorials. The course was attended by 43 delegates from across the UK and abroad. The tutorials were delivered by 27 plastic surgery consultants. Anonymous feedback was collected from both delegates and faculty. Results The overall feedback from delegates were unanimously positive; 100% of the delegates stated that ‘they would recommend the course to a colleague’. All faculty and delegates agreed the use of video conferencing and small group tutorial to be either ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ suitable for an interactive virtual course like MTL. 98% of delegates thought the course has made them feel more prepared to be a registrar, and 69% of delegates preferred an online interactive course instead of the traditional face-to-face method, for non-practical based courses. Conclusions COVID-19 necessitated delivering ‘Making the Leap” as a Zoom course. However, the feedback clearly demonstrated the need for such a course, and the suitability of the format. We discuss the challenges and learning points from our experience delivering successful interactive courses via Zoom.

Peninsular War veterans often faced a difficult transition back into civilian society after the conflict, receiving inadequate pay and little official commemoration. This led to a common fear, expressed explicitly in their memoirs, that their stories had not been and would not be properly told. This chapter demonstrates that many soldiers-turned-authors deliberately used their autobiographies to take issue with the academic, historical record of the war. It reveals that, in Spain, the first official history of the Peninsular War was written by a group of veterans, who helped to choose the Spanish name for the conflict: la Guerra de la Independencia. It then shows how veterans’ memoirs contributed to the creation of distinct national narratives of the war in Spain, Britain, and France, examining different representations of the ‘Other’, depictions of the guerrilla war and its leaders, and praise or criticism for the regular army.

Based on archival data the paper describes the religious situation in the Buryat ASSR, then the Buryat SSR and the Republic of Buryatia during the change of socio-political development of the national state in the late 1980s - early last decade of the XX century. The authors say that this problem has not received serious analysis in the framework of scientific publications. Therefore, the research was based on archival documents of the State Archive of the Russian Federation (SA RF) and the State Archive of the Republic of Buryatia (SARB). The purpose of the study is to characterize the religious situation in the border area of the local territory in a difficult transition period of national history. The research methodology is based on the fundamental principles of historical science, the principles of historicism and objectivity, which allowed us to consider a rather complex component of the life of society - religion, without bias, in its historical development. The result of the study was the identification of features of religious processes in Buryatia during the period under review. The authors provide quantitative indicators for registered religious associations and religious buildings. The religious situation is assessed against the background of the General situation in the RSFSR (Russian Federation), with statistics for the Republic and the country. It is noted that the trends of religious processes in Buryatia, at the time under review, were similar to the national ones. This is a sharp surge in religiosity, against the background of the resolution of religious freedom, on the one hand, and, in the context of the socio-economic crisis, on the other. It is said that in Buryatia, in addition to traditional religious teachings for the region, new ones appeared, among which, there were the teachings of totalitarian sects. It describes the difficulties that arose in connection with the change in the attitude of the authorities to religions. It is noted that further work with sources is necessary, which will allow us to recreate the most complete picture of the religious situation in Buryatia during the difficult transition period of the late 1980s - early 1990s.

The publication of the 2020 Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists clinical practice guidelines for the management of mood disorders was followed by a series of correspondences discussing the place of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the sequence care for the routine treatment of depression. The controversy has led to an intense debate about the positioning of this neuromodulation technique in the clinical armamentarium for depression in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry. The many arguments presented by the authors to defend their respective points of view can be summarised in two main key issues: (i) the interpretation of the level of evidence of rTMS for depression and (ii) the characterisation of patients who could benefit from this treatment. In this viewpoint, we discuss the difficult transition from research to clinical practice regarding the use of rTMS to treat depression.

The transition period from high school to postsecondary education has been shown to be a difficult time for youth, especially those with disabilities. The use of occupational therapists in transition services can positively affect a student's ability to attend postsecondary education. Guidance and support are necessary to teach these individuals life skills needed for future success in the transition to postsecondary education. This capstone project aims to assess the needs of students at the Winston school to identify occupational limitations in the area of life skills. Through identification of problem areas, a detailed program was created and implemented to meet the needs of this population during this difficult transition.

This chapter focuses on a group of mathematics teacher educators across the state of Texas that utilized collaboration before and during a global pandemic in order to examine and apply equity issues in their own instruction and delivery of their mathematics methods courses. The authors will highlight and share how the use of collaboration that initiated with the focus on rethinking equity practices in methods courses morphed into a supportive environment that helped the group of mathematics teacher educators through a difficult transition in education due to COVID-19. The goal of the chapter is to urge educators to use collaboration as an impetus for professional development and establishing communities of practice.

The article considers works devoted to the Revolution of Dignity and the Russian-Ukrainian war in eastern Ukraine.Purpose. The purpose of the proposed study is to analyze the novels of Ukrainian writers (A. Kokotukha, R. Nayda, S. Ukhachevsky, V. Ivchenko, V. Ivanyna), written in the aesthetics of neorealism, to characterize the features of such prose and evaluate it in the context of works on similar topics.Methods. The following methods were used during the research: descriptive, historical-biographical, comparative-historical (to compare different types of characters and track the dynamics of individual images), available elements of the hermeneutic method, narrative and intertextual analysis, etc.Results. The research revealed that works written in the aesthetics of neorealism appeared among the array of Maidan-military texts. Their authors, seeking to get to know a person in a difficult transition period, show psycho-emotional changes and understand social metamorphoses in general during social change, military cataclysms and personal crises represent in their works heroes from different social strata in extreme circumstances (Revolution of Dignity and War), revealing through actions the characters of their characters, their psychology and motivation (often irrational essence). It is noted that the historical and social context in these works is really just a background for the analysis of writers of various manifestations of Ukrainian life, as well as for the search for independent of society or individual patterns of existence. Emphasis on social pictures-generalizations is shifted in the works to their comprehension, the microworld of the individual is of interest to the authors as a component of the macroworld of society. It is noted that the appearance in the novels of mythologists fratricide, the Fall, and others. give the works a philosophical connotation, and the emphasized attention to documentary authenticity and deep psychologism testify to the features of neorealism in the texts.Conclusions. Studies of neorealist works dedicated to the Revolution of Dignity and the war in eastern Ukraine allow us to form a more complete picture of modern Ukrainian literature.Key words: realism, Maidan-military prose, theoretical-critical discourse, demythologization, typology, hero-character, ideology, stylistic manner, narration.

Transitioning from one of the technical faithful to one of the hated PHBs (pointy-haired bosses), whether in the corporate or the open-source world, is truly a difficult transition. Unless you are a type who has always been meant for the C-suite?, it's going to take a lot of work and a lot of patience, mostly with yourself, to make this transition. Doing something "for the good of (blank)" usually means you are sublimating your own needs to the needs of others, and if you don't acknowledge that, you are going to get smacked and surprised by your own reactions to people very, very quickly.
