Inverted indexes continue to be a mainstay of text search engines, allowing efficient querying of large document collections. While there are a number of possible organizations, document-ordered indexes are the most common, since they are amenable to various query types, support index updates, and allow for efficient dynamic pruning operations. One disadvantage with document-ordered indexes is that high-scoring documents can be distributed across the document identifier space, meaning that index traversal algorithms that terminate early might put search effectiveness at risk. The alternative is impact-ordered indexes, which primarily support top- disjunctions but also allow for anytime query processing, where the search can be terminated at any time, with search quality improving as processing latency increases. Anytime query processing can be used to effectively reduce high-percentile tail latency that is essential for operational scenarios in which a service level agreement (SLA) imposes response time requirements. In this work, we show how document-ordered indexes can be organized such that they can be queried in an anytime fashion, enabling strict latency control with effective early termination. Our experiments show that processing document-ordered topical segments selected by a simple score estimator outperforms existing anytime algorithms, and allows query runtimes to be accurately limited to comply with SLA requirements.

Background: We aimed to establish a reference standard of Body Mass Index (BMI) for the growth of preschool children in China. Methods: We monitored and obtained the height and weight of 50702 children aged 3-6 yr in 31 provinces in mainland China in 2014. The reference standard and percentile curve of BMI preschool children aged 3-6 yr old were formulated by using Lambda-Median-Sigma (LMS) method in China. Results: The common grounds of the male and female children were as follows: the percentile maps were similar in shape; the graphs of children aged 4-6 were approximately horn shaped. The differences between male and female children were as follows: the BMI values of male children in the same age group and the same percentile were higher than those of the female children. The change pattern of male children was larger than that of female children. BMI of 3 yr old and 6 yr old children was larger than those of 4 yr old and 5 yr old. During the change from low percentile to high percentile, the BMI values of Chinese male children exceeded WHO to a larger extent, and the BMI values of Chinese female children were substantially consistent with WHO, but the high percentile greater than P95 exceeded WHO. Conclusion: The BMI growth chart developed can be applied in monitoring the growth and nutrition of preschool children in China. We recommend the promotion of the results in the field of preventive health care.

Although the use of free samples is extensive across industries, the effects of free samples across individuals with varying levels of usage have yet to be systematically examined. The models discussed in the literature consider targeting only the current nonusers of a product. In this research, we examine the question of targeting the current users both analytically and empirically for an experience good. Our analytical discussions highlight the reasons why some current users may be effective targets for free-sample promotions. We then conduct an empirical analysis using a data set on pre- and post-free-sample promotion mobile data usage provided by a telecom firm. The empirical findings are consistent with our analytical results. Specifically, we find the initial usage level to be a key determinant of both the redemption rate of a free-sample offer and the subsequent change in usage owing to free-sample redemption. In our context, the redemption rate increased from the low-percentile users to the high-percentile users. We also find that the change in usage was (weakly) monotonically increasing up to the [Formula: see text] percentile of usage distribution. Beyond the [Formula: see text] percentile, the effect was generally not significant. We discuss the managerial and policy implications of our findings. Abstract A combination of cloud-permitting model (CPM) simulations, satellite, and reanalysis data are used to test whether the diurnal cycle in surface temperature has a significant impact on the intensity of deep convection as measured by high-percentile updraft velocities, lightning, and CAPE. The land–ocean contrast in lightning activity shows that convective intensity varies between land and ocean independently from convective quantity. Thus, a mechanism that explains the land–ocean contrast must be able to do so even after controlling for precipitation variations. Motivated by the land–ocean contrast, we use idealized CPM simulations to test the impact of the diurnal cycle on high-percentile updrafts. In simulations, updrafts are somewhat enhanced due to large-scale precipitation enhancement by the diurnal cycle. To control for large-scale precipitation, we use statistical sampling techniques. After controlling for precipitation enhancement, the diurnal cycle does not affect convective intensities. To explain why sampled updrafts are not enhanced, we note that CAPE is also not increased, likely due to boundary layer quasi equilibrium (BLQE) occurring over our land area. Analysis of BLQE in terms of net positive and negative mass flux finds that boundary layer entrainment, and even more importantly downdrafts, account for most of the moist static energy (MSE) sink that is balancing surface fluxes. Using ERA-Interim data, we also find qualitative evidence for BLQE over land in the real world, as high percentiles of CAPE are not greater over land than over ocean.

ObjectiveTo determine if survival rates of preterm infants receiving active perinatal care improve over time.DesignThe German Neonatal Network is a cohort study of preterm infants with birth weight <1500 g. All eligible infants receiving active perinatal care are registered. We analysed data of patients discharged between 2011 and 2016.Setting43 German level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).Patients8222 preterm infants with a gestational age between 22/0 and 28/6 weeks who received active perinatal care.InterventionsParticipating NICUs were grouped according to their specific survival rate from 2011 to 2013 to high (percentile >P75), intermediate (P25–P75) and low (<P25) survival. We compared these survival rates with data in 2014–2016.Main outcome measuresDeath by any cause before discharge.ResultsTotal survival increased from 85.8% in 2011–2013 to 87.4% in 2014–2016. This increase was due to reduced mortality of NICUs with low survival rates in 2011–2013. Survival increased in these centres from 53% to 64% in the 22–24 weeks strata and from 73% to 84% in the 25–26 weeks strata.ConclusionsOur data support previous reports that active perinatal care of very immature infants improves outcomes at the border of viability and survival rates at higher gestational ages. The high total number of surviving infants below 24 weeks of gestation challenges national recommendations exclusively referring to gestational age as the single criterion for providing active care. However, more data are needed before recommendations for parental counselling should be reconsidered.Trial registrationApproval by the local institutional review board for research in human subjects of the University of Lübeck (file number 08–022) and by the local ethic committees of all participating centres has been given.

The levels of forty-three elements were determined in fresh, preserved, and frozen mussels (n = 208) with the purpose of evaluating their contribution to the recommended dietary intake of essential elements and their potential risk to Spanish consumers’ health. We found relevant differences in the element content in relation to the mode of conservation of mussels as well as in relation to their geographical origin, brand, or mode of production. According to our estimates, mussels are important contributors to the intake of most essential elements, contributing almost 70% of daily requirements of Se, 30–35% of Mo, Zn, and Co, and around 15% of Fe. At the same time, the pattern of average consumption of mussels in Spain does not seem to imply an excessive risk associated with any of the 36 toxic elements studied. However, it should be noted that, in the high percentile of consumption the exposure to Cd and As may be high, in particular that associated with the consumption of fresh and/or frozen mussels. According to the results of this study, a moderate consumption of mussels can be recommended as a valuable and safe source of trace elements.

It is essential to the government to recognize the factors causing the increasing trend of income inequality in Indonesia since the Gini coefficient increased between 1996 and 2016. Moreover, wage inequality, which represented by high percentile and low percentile of income, also shows widening gap since 2003. This study focuses on the factors of wage inequality acceleration through the supply side approach that follows the Mincerian wage equation model. Specifically, this paper aims to investigate the association between the return to education and wage inequality in Indonesia. The quantile regression method is applied to compute the return on the investment at different points of the wage distribution. The main finding is that education contributes to an increasing wage inequality due to the significant variation in the rate of return to education in different quantile and as increasing wage dispersion within the same education.DOI: 10.15408/sjie.v7i1.6071

Inherent uncertainties in estimation of extreme wave heights in hurricane-dominated regions are explored using data from the GOMOS Gulf of Mexico hindcast for 1900–2005. In particular, the effect of combining correlated values from a neighborhood of 72 grid locations on extreme wave height estimation is quantified. We show that, based on small data samples, extreme wave heights are underestimated and site averaging usually improves estimates. We present a bootstrapping approach to evaluate uncertainty in extreme wave height estimates. We also argue in favor of modeling supplementary indicators for extreme wave characteristics, such as a high percentile (95%) of the distribution of 100-year significant wave height, in addition to its most probable value, especially for environments where the distribution of 100-year significant wave height is strongly skewed.
