To shed light on whether and how firms changed compensation practices in response to a shift in the environment in which they operated, we examine whether there is contagion effect of executive compensation regulation on state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the emerging market of China. Specifically, we investigate whether firms not directly affected by the changing regulatory environment nonetheless changed executive compensation in response to the actions of the directly affected firms, which is called contagion effect. We further examine the specific contagion mechanisms and the economic consequences of regulation on compensation. We find that the regulation has a significant effect on compensation gap in central SOEs and a contagion effect on local SOEs but not for non-SOEs. Within SOEs, there is an intra-industry contagion effect of compensation regulation but not an intra-region effect. Further, central SOEs and local SOEs experience reduced firm performance after the compensation regulations, but not the non-SOEs; indicating that the compensation regulation does not have favorable economic consequences for both the directly affected central SOEs and the indirectly affected local SOEs.

In the last 50 years, the technology of rotary heat exchangers has not changed considerably. A reliable simulation can help improve the design of this technology. In this work, a simulation for rotary heat exchangers was developed and validated with multiple experimental data. This simulation takes an innovative approach based on locally calculated heat transfer coefficients and considers the entry region effect. This approach proved to be accurate since the average difference between the experimental results and the proposed model with a constant heat boundary condition is 0.1% and the maximum absolute deviation 1%. Experimental, as well as simulation results, indicate that lower empty tube gas velocity (1 m/s) and higher rotational speed (12 rpm) improve thermal efficiency compared to commonly used operating conditions. Additionally, a new model for predicting the local internal Nusselt number for sine ducts in the rotor channels is proposed, which considers the entry region effect.

Film condensation in a porous medium has been receiving increasing attention due to its wide range of heat transfer applications. Some examples of these practical applications are distillation, drying technology, geothermal energy, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and air conditioning. One of the characteristic features of film condensation in porous media is the formation of a two-phase zone separating the liquid film and the vapour zone due to capillary pressure. In this paper, a physico-mathematical model of liquid film condensation on a surface embedded in a porous medium with a two-phase region effect is developed and presented. The model is based on momentum and continuity equations as applied to the liquid film and the two-phase flow region supplemented with the Darcy flow assumption and assumptions on the Leverette J-function and the saturation behaviour near the edge of the liquid film. The developed model allows a simple analytical solution to the problem in distinction to semi-analytical and numerical solutions published by different authors. From the model developed, it shows that the presence of the two-phase region decreases the liquid film thickness. By taking the capillary effects into consideration results in higher heat transfer and condensation rates due to the decrease in the liquid film thickness. The presented model yields good agreement when compared to the theoretical results and experimental data by other authors. The developed model addresses the fundamental concepts of phase transition in porous media which can effectively find applications in many areas.
