The simultaneous scheme in the 2019 elections in Indonesia caused voter confusion, especially in the legislative elections. Citizens who are confused and disappointed when voting candidates characterize the declining quality of representation in electoral democracy. This study aims to determine the factors of confusion among citizens when they are in the voting booth. The case study research was conducted in Surabaya by interviewing 54 residents after the general election using recalling questions and in-depth interviews. The results show that the voter confusion factor is the effect of the complex design of the 2019 legislative election ballot paper, the lack of socialization about election procedures, and the difficulty of respondents understanding the simultaneous election models. The competency category shows that voter confusion is the respondents' low interest in political discussions and inadequate political knowledge. These two competence issues affect the quality of voters' political participation. Voter confusion in Surabaya generally motivates the phenomena of incorrect and misleading voting. In the sense of Indonesia which is building a stable democratic civilization, it is possible to hold elections without intensive institutional and functional oversight that can result in the erosion of the rights of people to vote, an increase in money policy, black campaigns and elections. Political participation for young and new voters in Indonesia, particularly in Parepare, is fairly low. This has come in light during simultaneous election in 2019, which was the first election in Indonesia where legislative and executive legislation were held in the same time. Which is why, as a new political party, especially the ones that targetted new voters such as Partai Solidaritas Indonesia (Indonesia’s Solidarity Party) needs to have an innovative and creative political communication strategy to attract the attentions of these new voters. This research analysis identifies these political communication strategy being used by Partai Solidaritas Indonesia branch Parepare, South Sulawesi, in their attempts to increase new voter’s political participation as well to heightened PSI’s vote, whether at the level of communicator, messages, channels, audience, and effect or feedbacks. By using observation and interview methods this research discovered that generally, Partai Solidaritas Indonesia’s attempt to seize significant votes in the 2019’s election were failing, due to several obstraction stems from internal causes as well as external ones. But in particular, the presence of this party has contributed to the increasing political participation of young and new voters in Parepare, South Sulawesi.

I consider debates about Proposition 8, a California initiative that proposed banning same-sex marriage in 2008 after it had been legalized earlier that year. I explore family-making narratives of mothers of color in particular, in relation to political debates in news reports and letters to the editor between June and November 2008. Vociferous debate about children as symbols for the future of the nation engaged nationalist language of rights, equality, and “true Americans” on both sides. Sociopolitical fears about how legalizing same-sex marriage would affect children’s education and moral development infused sociopolitical narratives about the dangers of same-sex marriage for the United States. When the state initiative was passed on election night in November 2008, same-sex marriages were declared unlawful in the state. The simultaneous election of Barack Obama raised racial tensions about whose votes tipped which scales. I explore sociopolitical narratives of racial blame in news discussions of the political outcome.
