The article investigated the effects of solution and ging temperatures on microstructure and mechanical properties of ultra-high strength stainless steel 10Cr13Co13Mo5Ni3W1ⅤE(S280). Higher solution temperatures can improve impact toughness because of the quantity reduction of submicron-sized particles which act as microporous nucleation sites. S280 has the best mechanical properties at 1080 ℃ solution temperature. After quenching, the steel is completely martensite with almost no retained austenite. Aging at 560 ℃ results in peak strength due to the precipitation of fine carbides coherent zones. The loss of precipitates/matrix coherency and precipitates coarsening cause a decrease in strength at higher aging temperatures. Good strength and toughness obtained at 540 °C aging temperature are attributed to fine and dispersed strengthening phases such as Cr2C and Fe2Mo, and the recovery of austenite in high-density dislocation martensite matrix. The details of electron microscopy research, strengthening and toughening mechanisms are discussed.

Hydrogen embrittlement is one of the largest obstacles against the commercialisation of ultra-high strength quenching and partitioning (Q&P) steels with ultimate tensile strength over 1500 MPa, including the hot stamped steel parts that have undergone a Q&P treatment. In this work, the influence of partitioning temperature on hydrogen embrittlement of ultra-high strength Q&P steels is studied by pre-charged tensile tests with both dog-bone and notched samples. It is found that hydrogen embrittlement resistance is enhanced by the higher partitioning temperature. Then, the hydrogen embrittlement mechanism is analysed in terms of hydrogen, retained austenite, and martensite matrix. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) shows that the hydrogen trapping properties are similar in the Q&P steels, which cannot explain the enhancement of hydrogen embrittlement resistance. On the contrary, it is found that the relatively low retained austenite stability after the higher temperature partitioning ensures more sufficient TRIP effect before hydrogen-induced fracture. Additionally, dislocation recovery and solute carbon depletion at the higher partitioning temperature can reduce the flow stress of the martensite matrix, improving its intrinsic toughness and reducing its hydrogen sensitivity, both of which result in the higher hydrogen embrittlement resistance.

A novel steel combining the “quenching and tempering (Q&T)” process was exploited that can achieve the enhancement of austenite by interface migration during tempering the martensitic matrix mixed with films of austenite. A high uniform elongation (12%) combined with high yield tensile strength (1500 MPa) was obtained, which showed distinct advantages over all the other advanced high strength steels under development for a lightweight car body. Furthermore, the effect of austenite on enhancement of ductility in “Q&T” steels with a martensite matrix was elucidated, which suggested that the ductility was promoted by enhancing boundary sliding and delaying work hardening of the martensitic matrix.

In this study, vacuum low-pressure carburizing heat treatments were carried out on 18Cr2Ni4WA case-carburized alloy steel. The evolution and phase transformation mechanism of the microstructure of the carburized layer during low-temperature tempering and its effect on the surface hardness were studied. The results showed that the carburized layer of the 18Cr2Ni4WA steel was composed of a large quantity of martensite and retained austenite. The type of martensite matrix changed from acicular martensite to lath martensite from the surface to the core. The hardness of the carburized layer gradually decreased as the carbon content decreased. A thermodynamic model was used to show that the low-carbon retained austenite was easier to transform into martensite at lower temperatures, since the high-carbon retained austenite was more thermally stable than the low-carbon retained austenite. The mechanical stability—not the thermal stability—of the retained austenite in the carburized layer dominated after carburizing and quenching, and cryogenic treatment had a limited effect on promoting the martensite formation. During low-temperature tempering, the solid-solution carbon content of the martensite decreased, the compressive stress on the retained austenite was reduced and the mechanical stability of the retained austenite decreased. Therefore, during cooling after low-temperature tempering, the low-carbon retained austenite transformed into martensite, whereas the high-carbon retained austenite still remained in the microstructure. The changes in the martensite matrix hardness had a far greater effect than the transformation of the retained austenite to martensite on the case hardness of the carburized layer.

To develop ultra high-strength cold stamping steels for automobile frame parts, the effects of alloying elements on hydrogen embrittlement properties of ultra high-strength low alloy transformation induced plasticity (TRIP)-aided steels with a martensite matrix (TM steels) were investigated using the four-point bending test and conventional strain rate tensile test (CSRT). Hydrogen embrittlement properties of the TM steels were improved by the alloying addition. Particularly, 1.0 mass% chromium added TM steel indicated excellent hydrogen embrittlement resistance. This effect was attributed to (1) the decrease in the diffusible hydrogen concentration at the uniform and fine prior austenite grain and packet, block, and lath boundaries; (2) the suppression of hydrogen trapping at martensite matrix/cementite interfaces owing to the suppression of precipitation of cementite at the coarse martensite lath matrix; and (3) the suppression of the hydrogen diffusion to the crack initiation sites owing to the high stability of retained austenite because of the existence of retained austenite in a large amount of the martensite–austenite constituent (M–A) phase in the TM steels containing 1.0 mass% chromium.


Experiments on the wear behavior of AISI440 steel were conducted and the specimens were subjected to annealing process, followed by tempering. AISI440 is a martensitic stainless steel which is used in many applications due to their hardness and wear resistance. AISI440 is subjected to Annealing and Tempering processes at different temperatures like 500, 600 and 7000C. The result showed a lath of martensite and retained austenite. After tempering the microstructure consists of mixtures of tempered martensite, carbides and reversed austenite dispersed in the martensite matrix obtaining the strength and toughness in the steel. The metallographic studies were compared with scanning electron microscope results.
