Visualizing Beowulf has always been problematic, which is a paradox in itself taking into account the highly visual power the Old English epic poem holds. As far as films are concerned, we are still waiting for “a full-length Beowulf film that actually sticks pretty closely to the poem” (Haydock & Risden 2013: 186).

I shall introduce a hermeneutic perspective and photography analyses from visual theory to the debate concerning the status of photographic representation (together with film, as it is based on the photographic method) which continues within Anglo-Saxon aesthetics and analytical aesthetics. I mostly confront Roger Scruton and Gregory Currie’s thoughts on the photograph and its object (source), representation-by-origin and representation-by-use with Gottfried Boehm’s concept of aesthetic nondifferentiation, and Georges Didi-Huberman’s analyses of photographs. This shall allow me to identify the two aspects of photography (independence of an individual object and visual dynamics of an image) which have a significant impact on the status of photography as a representation and on the potential of cinematographic creation as a story told through images.

The elderly population has a rapid development. The elderly is often labeled as unproductive, even as a burden on the family. Simple but effective skills activities can be an alternative solution. One of them is by making fermented single onion-based functional food products. This community service aims to extend the productive activities of the elderly population. Fermented garlic products can be consumed alone to improve health. In addition, products can be sold so that they can become additional income for the family. There were three methods, namely counseling, training and mentoring. Counseling related to the health of the elderly, training in making fermented single garlic directly to the target and assisting in implementing the flow of fermented garlic making until the product is successful. The community service program was carried out in the Elderly Group of Mulyosari Village, Surabaya with 50 participants. Counseling and training were carried out with visual power point materials, demonstrations on how to process fermented garlic, and direct practice with mentoring for 10 days until the product was finished. Conclusion: Community service in the form of counseling has an impact on increasing the knowledge of the elderly in Mulyosari Village. Training and assistance in making fermented garlic can also be practiced independently by the elderly as proven by the success of the finished product. This activity can increase the productivity of the elderly, benefit health by consuming it, and become a business opportunity. abstrakPenduduk lanjut usia memiliki jumlah perkembangan yang cukup pesat.

This chapter examines visual-verbal connections that can be perceived in individual letters. Cultural patterns that build our visual literacy include visual writings in many modes and styles, visible stories, and visual rhetoric. The text examines old ways of communication attained by developing writing systems and discusses kinds of characters making different alphabets. Further text is about human characters, traits of their personalities, and then examining the visual power of characters that constitute the modern English alphabet by developing alphabet-based projects linking letters with human characters and human emotions.

Purpose of the study: This study aims at analyzing the role of shelf-space and display in stimulating impulse buying. Further, this study also covers the comparison between all shelf positions (regular-shelf, Chiller, and wings-rack) to get insights deeper into which one is the most effective in stimulating impulse buying. Methodology: By highlighting the case of a beverage brand in a hypermarket in Indonesia, the recent study uncovers the experiences and perceptions of 200 participants through an explanatory survey. The primary data collection has been done by distributing survey questionnaires to 200 target respondents located in Jakarta. The data collected have been analysed using SPSS software. Main Findings: Both shelf-space and display factors are found to have a positive and significant effect on impulse buying, where the former is found dominant. Various constructs in shelf-space such as the spaciousness-of-shelf, highness-of-traffic, largeness-of-shelf, easiness in finding the shelf, and in-store display communications such as the attractiveness-of-color, cleanness-of-display, neatness-of-display arrangement, the blocking-space, and the attractiveness-of-product arrangement emerge validly. Of the three objects studied, the chiller had the highest effectiveness compared to the regular-shelf and wings-rack in arousing the impulsivity of consumer purchases. This fact shows that the appearance of cold drinks seems to have a significant effect on consumers in causing impulse buying, especially for consumers in tropical countries like Indonesia. The seller or brand owner should consider this finding. Applications of this study: This study confirms the real, meaningful, and experiential visual power of in-store brand communications. So the brand can explore creatively and ergonomically as well as maximizing the potentials of visual communication, especially shelf-space and display in sales spaces as silent sellers. Novelty/Originality of this study: Few studies still pay attention to the role of in-store brand communications in encouraging impulse buying, especially in an era where the virtual shopping world is increasingly distracting researchers and marketers from the spark of communication events in the actual shopping space. This article proves how the attractiveness of in-store brand communications through shelf-space and in-store displays has a significant impact on impulse buying.

The concept of enunciation has flowed into Lacanian psychoanalysis through Benveniste’s linguistic theory and refers to the constitutive division of the subject into the “subject of speech” and the “speaking subject.” While the former refers to a transparent model of the self, the latter refers to the opaque aspect of the uttering subject. In summary, it can be said that most authors avoid the negativity of the absent cause to the extent that all try to conceive a concrete instance of enunciation. If in Metz’s text “History/ Discourse” the viewer takes this position, in Raymond Bellour’s analysis of Hitchcock’s Marnie the enunciator coincides with the author. In a counterreading of Marnie, I try to show that it is precisely in the anamorphic rear projection sequences of the film that a division of the enunciator is set in motion, which negates the visual power of the authorial subject.

The Pixeldust project is a contributory, interactive video/audio/text engine that can be output to many different forms of exhibition. It is conceived of as a form of algorithmic filmmaking, that blends the aesthetics and visual power of cinema with the flexibility and mutability of computer programming.  Written in the Processing language, the Pixeldust engine accepts photographic portraits, disassembles them into component pixels and particles that lie like dust in the bottom of the projected screen, then dramatically sweeps them up and crystallizes them into a complete portrait accompanied by the spoken word attributed to the portrayed person. Pixeldust is a platform that encourages individuals and communities to share their own examples of inspirational people.
