From the perspectives of grounded, situated, and embodied cognition, we have developed a new approach for assessing individual differences. Because this approach is grounded in two dimensions of situatedness—situational experience and the Situated Action Cycle—we refer to it as the Situated Assessment Method (SAM2). Rather than abstracting over situations during assessment of a construct (as in traditional assessment instruments), SAM2 assesses a construct in situations where it occurs, simultaneously measuring factors from the Situated Action Cycle known to influence it. To demonstrate this framework, we developed the SAM2 Habitual Behavior Instrument (SAM2 HBI). Across three studies with a total of 442 participants, the SAM2 HBI produced a robust and replicable pattern of results at both the group and individual levels. Three trait-level measures of behavior regularity across 80 behaviors, 40 positive behaviors, and 40 negative behaviors exhibited large reliable individual differences. Several sources of evidence demonstrated the construct validity of these measures. At both the group and individual levels, the SAM2 measure of behavior regularity was associated with factors from the Situated Action Cycle known to influence habitual behavior in the literature (consistency, automaticity, immediate reward, long-term reward). Regressions explained approximately 65% of the variance at the group level and a median of approximately 75% at the individual level. The SAM2 measure of behavior regularity also exhibited well-established interactions with personality measures for self-control and neuroticism. Cognitive-affective processes from the Situated Action Cycle explained nearly all the variance in these interactions. Finally, a composite measure of habitualness established habitual behaviors at both the group and individual levels. Additionally, a composite measure of reward was strongly related to the composite measure of habitualness, increasing with self-control and decreasing with neuroticism.

AbstractBackgroundAnorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are associated with altered brain structure and function, as well as increased habitual behavior. This neurobehavioral profile may implicate neurochemical changes in the pathogenesis of these illnesses. Altered glutamate, myo-inositol and N-acetyl aspartate (NAA) concentrations are reported in restrictive AN, yet whether these extend to binge-eating disorders, or relate to habitual traits in affected individuals, remains unknown.MethodsUsing single-voxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we measured glutamate, myo-inositol and NAA in 85 women [n=22 AN (binge-eating/purging subtype; AN-BP), n=33 BN, n=30 controls]. Spectra were acquired from the right inferior lateral prefrontal cortex and the right occipital cortex. To index habitual behavior, participants performed an instrumental learning task and completed the Creature of Habit Scale. Exploratory analyses examined associations between metabolites and habitual behavior.ResultsWomen with AN-BP, but not BN, had reduced myo-inositol and NAA concentrations relative to controls in both voxels. Patient groups had intact performance on the instrumental learning task; however, both groups reported increased routine behaviors compared to controls. Women with BN also reported greater automatic behaviors, and automaticity was related to reduced prefrontal glutamate and NAA in the AN-BP group.DiscussionFindings extend previous reports of reduced myo-inositol and NAA levels in AN to AN-BP, which may reflect disrupted axonal-glial signaling. Although we found inconsistent support for increased habitual behavior in AN-BP and BN, we identified preliminary associations between prefrontal metabolites and automaticity in AN-BP. These results provide further evidence of unique neurobiological profiles across binge-eating disorders.

The continuous improvement in the growth rate of urbanization in Indonesia is causing an increased need for work, limited residential land, and high prices for residential development in urban areas. This phenomenon has an impact on the low occupancy rate for the millennial generation and this makes developers offer co-living space which is considered capable of solving the problem of accommodation and its use as a living space is becoming increasingly popular in recent times. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the factors influencing the formation of habitual occupancy among millennials in the co-living space of Indonesia. The process involved using a survey method with online questionnaires to collect data from the study population which consisted of the millennial generation with a sample size of 190 respondents. The data obtained were processed using exploratory multivariant statistics to show the relationship between the latent variables used in forming habitual behavior in shared living. The results showed 10 factors which constitute the living behavior in co-living space and they include public facilities, social, place attachment, feeling of satisfaction, environment, intrinsic, extrinsic, group development, economy, and workspace availability.

This article suggests that there are systematic ways in which the identity of the ‘self’, as created and performed through first-person markers, can be made relevant and consequential in particular episodes of interaction. More specifically, the study looks at generalizations that people present about themselves in local interactional contexts: displays of the types of people they are and the ways in which they always or never behave (‘I am this kind of person’, ‘I never do this’). It will be shown that such self-generalizations are typically used to account for one’s behavior, and that this tendency is tied to the epistemic and moral rights provided by the first-person perspective, having the primary rights to one’s own experience. The study suggests that speakers’ personal characteristics or habitual behavior can be offered as a locally produced micro-identity, which can come to have interactional significance.

AbstractThe ventral striatum (VS) is considered a key region that flexibly updates recent changes in reward values for habit learning. However, this update process may not serve to maintain learned habitual behaviors, which are insensitive to value changes. Here, using fMRI in humans and single-unit electrophysiology in macaque monkeys we report another role of the primate VS: that the value memory subserving habitual seeking is stably maintained in the VS. Days after object-value associative learning, human and monkey VS continue to show increased responses to previously rewarded objects, even when no immediate reward outcomes are expected. The similarity of neural response patterns to each rewarded object increases after learning among participants who display habitual seeking. Our data show that long-term memory of high-valued objects is retained as a single representation in the VS and may be utilized to evaluate visual stimuli automatically to guide habitual behavior.

We have recently reported sustained inhibition in the dorsomedial striatum (DMS) and sustained excitation in the dorsolateral striatum (DLS) during execution of a lever press sequence in a discrete-trials task promoting habit. This sustained dorsostriatal activity was present early on, and did not clearly change in step with improved performance over ten training sessions. Early onset of sequence-related neural activity could have resulted from rapid habitual learning promoted by presentation of lever cues, predicting reward availability and delivery. To test this hypothesis, we compared DLS and DMS spiking activity in the discrete trials habit-promoting task with two task variants that promote goal-directed behavior. Comparison of the three tasks revealed that mean neuronal spiking activity was generally sustained across the lever press sequence in the task promoting habit and characterized by overall excitation in DLS and inhibition in DMS relative to baseline. In contrast, mean activity differences in DLS and DMS were much less prominent, and most changes occurred transiently around individual lever presses, in the tasks promoting goal-directed behavior. These results indicate that sequence delineation cues, such as the lever cues in these studies, promote habitual behavior and that this habitual behavior is encoded in the striatum by cue-triggered sustained DLS excitation and DMS inhibition that likely reflects cue-elicited behavioral chunking.

In this paper, we provide a pragmatist conceptualization of affective habits as relatively flexible ways of channeling affectivity. Our proposal, grounded in a conception of sensibility and habits derived from John Dewey, suggests understanding affective scaffoldings in a novel and broader sense by re-orienting the debate from objects to interactions. We claim that habits play a positive role in supporting and orienting human sensibility, allowing us to avoid any residue of dualism between internalist and externalist conceptions of affectivity. We provide pragmatist tools for understanding the environment's role in shaping our feelings, emotions, moods, and affective behaviors. However, we contend that in addition to environment, the continuous and recursive affective transaction between agent and environment (both natural and cultural) are also crucially involved. We claim that habits are transformative, which is especially evident when we consider that emotions are often the result of a crisis in habitual behavior and successively play a role in prompting changes of habits. The final upshot is a conceptualization of affective habits as pervasive tools for feelings that scaffold human conduct as well as key features in the transformation of behaviors.
