We focused on a single-shot method for directly measuring the temporal contrast enhancement of a single plasma mirror by analyzing the spectrum of a chirped pulse spatiotemporally overlapped with the igniting laser used for generating a plasma mirror. Experimentally, temporal contrast enhancement of 102 by one plasma mirror was successfully measured in a hundred picosecond timescale and was consistent with the theory. This single-shot measurement method caused no degradation on the performance of the plasma mirror, which was proved by monitoring the efficiency and far-field pattern of the igniting laser after the plasma mirror. Combined with calorimeters and CCD cameras, this method is expected to realize the single-shot online diagnosis of plasma mirrors. This method is expected to be an efficient approach for measuring the temporal contrast enhancement of the plasma mirrors.

We do not understand why non-white ethnicity and chronic kidney disease increase susceptibility to COVID-19. The lectin pathway of complement activation is a key contributor to innate immunity and inflammation. Concentrations of plasma lectin pathway proteins influence pathway activity and vary with ethnicity. We measured circulating lectin proteins in a multi-ethnic cohort of chronic kidney disease patients with and without COVID19 infection to determine if lectin pathway activation was contributing to COVID19 severity. We measured 11 lectin proteins in serial samples from a cohort of 33 patients with chronic kidney impairment and COVID19. Controls were single plasma samples from 32 patients on dialysis and 32 healthy individuals. We demonstrated multiple associations between recognition molecules and associated proteases of the lectin pathway and COVID-19, including COVID-19 severity. Some of these associations were unique to patients of Asian and White ethnicity. Our novel findings demonstrate that COVID19 infection alters the concentration of plasma lectin proteins and some of these changes were linked to ethnicity. This suggests a role for the lectin pathway in the host response to COVID-19 and suggest that variability within this pathway may contribute to ethnicity-associated differences in susceptibility to severe COVID-19.

AbstractMultiple myeloma (MM) is a bone marrow cancer of resident plasma cells that affects 125,000 patients in the U.S. with ∼ 30,000 new cases per year. Its signature is the clonal over-proliferation of a single plasma cell that secretes a patient specific monoclonal immunoglobulin (M-Ig). Detecting this patient specific M-Ig could allow sensitive detection of minimal residual disease in multiple myeloma from patient serum. Aptamers, single-stranded oligonucleotides with affinity and specificity to a target molecule, have recently been introduced as affinity reagents able to detect MM M-Igs. Here we adapt these benchtop M-Ig systematic evolution of ligands through exponential enrichment (SELEX) techniques to our bead integrated microfluidic SELEX (BIMS) device to rapidly generate patient specific aptamers. Using MM patient serum, we isolate patient M-Ig specific aptamers rapidly (runtime < 12 hours) with high affinity (KD < 20 nM) while consuming limited quantities of patient M-Ig (< 100 μg).

Pristine nanomaterials are normally prepared using finely controlled fabrication processes. Because no imperfect nanostructure remains, they cannot be used directly as electrode substrates of functional devices. This is because perfectly organized nanostructures or nanomaterials commonly require posttreatment to generate intentionally, the kinds of desirable defects inside or on their surfaces that enable effective functionalization. Plasma treatment is an easier, simpler and more widely used way (relative to other methods) to modify a variety of nanomaterials, although plasma-functionalized nano surfaces commonly have a short lifetime. We present herein a dual plasma treatment (DPT) that significantly enhances the degree and lifetime of plasma-induced surface functional groups on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The DPT process consists of two individually optimized oxygen–plasma treatments. The DPT-modified SWCNT functioned as a sensing material for ammonia gas for more than a month. It also provided more than three times the degree of functionality for amplified signal output than with a single-plasma-treated SWCNT electrode.

Abstract Background: The presence of chronic deciduitis (CD) was determined in patients diagnosed with or without chronic endometritis (CE) before pregnancy. Objective: To study the effect of CE on decidua in cases of miscarriage. Methods: Decidual tissue was obtained from the patients who miscarried at the first pregnancy within a year after the diagnosis of the presence or absence of CE. The number and distribution pattern of plasma cells stained with CD138 in decidual tissue in 10 high-power fields (HPFs) was examined. The prevalence of CD diagnosed with four different grade; grade 0, no plasma cell in 10 HPFs, thus Non-CD ;grade 1, rare single plasma cells; grade 2, rare clusters or more than 5 single cells total; and grade 3, many plasma cells with more than 5 clusters, were examined and compared between Non-CE and CE.Results: The incidence rate of CD of grade2+3 was significantly higher in CE than Non-CE (53.8%; 7/13 vs. 0%; 0/13, P<0.01). Presence of clusters or a number of plasma cells in 10 HPFs of decidua showed a sensitivity of 53.8%, a specificity of 100%, a positive predictive value of 100%, and a negative predictive value of 68.4% for the diagnosis of CE.Conclusion: Presence of clusters of plasma cells or five or more of plasma cells in decidua was found in more than half of CE, but not found in Non-CE. When CD with cluster or five or more of plasma cells is confirmed histologically in miscarriage decidual tissue, the presence of CE before the pregnancy should be suspected.

We derived a general equation governing the spectra of electrostatic surface plasmons supported by a waveguide structure of two identical plasma slabs separated by a dielectric medium. The plasma slabs are parallel, homogeneous, and have finite thicknesses. The geometry under consideration supports two surface plasmon modes, which we investigated numerically for Polyethylene $\varepsilon_d=2.25$ and vacuum $\varepsilon_d=1$ as central regions. With vacuum as a central region, the two surface plasmon modes become coupled and merge into the well known single mode of quasi-static frequency $\omega=0.707\omega_{\rm p}$. The surface plasmon modes in the presence of a Polyethylene are decoupled and remain nondegenerate over the whole range of $kd$. Therefore, the two plasmon modes propagate independent of each other with distinct quasi-static resonance frequencies, namely, a backward wave with $\omega=0.707\omega_{\rm p}$ corresponding to a single plasma-vacuum interface and a forward wave with $\omega=\frac{\omega_{\rm p}}{\sqrt{3.25}}=0.55\omega_{\rm p}$ corresponding to a single plasma-dielectric interface. Increasing the central region width is found to introduce a delay in reaching the quasi-static resonance frequencies. The effect of collision is to down shift the mode frequencies for long wavelengths and also to down shift the quasi-static frequencies.
