This study aimed to investigate the relations among perceived chronic social adversity, hope and suicidal ideation among Chinese college students. 535 college students completed the Perceived Chronic Social Adversity Questionnaire (PCSAQ), the Suicidal Ideation Scale (SIS), and the Revised Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (RADHS). The results showed that perceived chronic social adversity was positively associated with suicidal ideation, and hope was negatively associated with suicidal ideation. The results also confirmed that hope negatively moderated the relationship between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation. Further study showed that there was a significant positive relation between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation under the low hope level, however, there was a non-significant relation between perceived chronic social adversity and suicidal ideation under the high hope level.

AbstractThe social identity model of system attitudes (SIMSA) suggests that system justification among low-status groups can be explained by ingroup identification and the hope for a collective future improvement. In this report, we summarize the results of a cross-sectional investigation concerning the relationship between system justification, hope and identification based on a sample of 200 LGBTQIA+ individuals (identifying themselves as non-normative with respect to gender identity and sexual orientation). The results were supportive of SIMSA expectations and showed that system justification was positively linked to hope for future advancement. Importantly, hope played a key role influencing the relations between ingroup identification and perceived ingroup status: for low-status individuals who had high hope, ingroup identification was positively associated with system justification. Limits are acknowledged.

The current study is intended to determine the role of hope in the effect of patience on resilience. This study predicts effects are impatient with the resilience reinforced with high hope disposition. 320 respondents (52% female) participated in this study with an average age of 16.3 (SD = 0.89). The results of this study indicates that hope has a significant role as a moderator in the relationship between patience and resilience. In individuals who have high disposition of hope, the effects of patience to resilience will be stronger. Meanwhile, in individuals who have lower disposition of hope, the effects of patience to resilience becomes insignificant. The results of the study prove that the effect of patience on resilience is strengthened by the high disposition of hope.

Pooled data treated with the Student t-test of the matched sample revealed that adolescents differ in their hope. Males reported higher hope than females. And both reported less hope in the institutions in the country and a high hope in themselves, and as such belief in what they can do to escape the felt poverty. The study made recommendations based on the context of the study. KEYWORDS: Hope, adolescents, nation induced poverty, frustration, lack of hope, and ongoing distress

To better understand the moderating effect of coping mechanisms (distraction and rumination) and internal assets (hope) on the relationship between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms, a sample of 363 African American students (65.3% female; mean age = 20.25 years; SD = 2.39) from two large Midwestern universities were surveyed using self-report measures. Hierarchical multiple regressions were used to explore the relationships among the variables and depressive symptoms. Results indicated that discrimination (B = 0.10, p < .001) and ruminative coping (B = 1.05, p < .001) were positively related to depressive symptoms, while hope was negatively related to depression (B = −0.33, p < .001). Further, the relationship between discrimination and depressive symptoms was moderated by hope (B = 0.01, p = .02). The interaction between discrimination and depressive symptoms suggested that participants who reported low levels of hope also reported more depressive symptoms regardless of level of discrimination, compared with those who reported high hope. For these African American emerging adults, the results bring to light the potential of an internal asset that aids in reduction of depressive symptoms in response to constant, potential harm such as racial discrimination.

In an attempt to explain some of the unknown phenomena of nature, including dark energy and dark matter, we explore the possibility of the existence of a fifth fundamental force of nature as also cited by some researchers. With the inclusion of such a force in the system, some of the vague things can be explained and there is high hope of its importance in building up a “theory of everything”. With this intention, we investigate some manifestations of the fifth force which stand from theoretical calculations or from theoretical point of view, though till now there is less experimental proof. However, the theoretical results obtained indicate the existence of a fifth force which will lead to the completion in defining the laws of physics and nature. With this discovery, science may be able to explain the whole complexity of the Universe in near future.
