Pressing strawberries for juice generates large amounts of pomace, containing valuable nutrients and therefore requiring more systematic studies for their valorization. This study compared conventional solid-liquid (SLE) and pressurized liquid (PLE) extractions with ethanol (EtOH) and H2O for the recovery of bioactive compounds from strawberry pomace. The composition and bioactivities of the products obtained were evaluated. Among 15 identified compounds, quercetin-3-glucuronide, kaempferol-3-glucuronide, tiliroside, ellagic, malic, succinic, citric and p-coumaric acids were the most abundant constituents in strawberry pomace extracts. SLE-EtOH and PLE-H2O extracts possessed strong antioxidant capacity in DPPH• and ABTS•+ scavenging and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Cytotoxicity, antiproliferative and cellular antioxidant activities in human cells of PLE-EtOH and PLE-H2O extracts were also evaluated. PLE-EtOH and PLE-H2O extracts possessed strong antioxidant activity, protecting Caco-2 cells upon stress stimuli, while PLE-EtOH extract showed higher antiproliferative activity with no cytotoxicity associated. In general, the results obtained revealed that properly selected biorefining schemes enable obtaining from strawberry pomace high nutritional value functional ingredients for foods and nutraceuticals.

Euglena gracilis produces paramylon, which is a feedstock for high-value functional foods and nutritional supplements. The enhancement of paramylon productivity is a critical challenge. Microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB) can improve microalgal productivity; however, the MGPB for E. gracilis remain unclear. This study isolated bacteria capable of enhancing E. gracilis growth and paramylon production under mixotrophic conditions. Enterobacter sp. CA3 and Emticicia sp. CN5 were isolated from E. gracilis grown with sewage-effluent bacteria under mixotrophic conditions at pH 4.5 or 7.5, respectively. In a 7-day E. gracilis mixotrophic culture with glucose, CA3 increased E. gracilis biomass and paramylon production 1.8-fold and 3.5-fold, respectively (at pH 4.5), or 1.9-fold and 3.5-fold, respectively (at pH 7.5). CN5 increased E. gracilis biomass and paramylon production 2.0-fold and 4.1-fold, respectively (at pH 7.5). However, the strains did not show such effects on E. gracilis under autotrophic conditions without glucose. The results suggest that CA3 and CN5 promoted both E. gracilis growth and paramylon production under mixotrophic conditions with glucose at pH 4.5 and 7.5 (CA3) or pH 7.5 (CN5). This study also provides an isolation method for E. gracilis MGPB that enables the construction of an effective E. gracilis–MGPB-association system for increasing the paramylon yield of E. gracilis.

Abstract The Bitcoin operates in a Blockchain network under which a group of participants are responsible for adding new blocks into the chain. These participants are called miners and the ones that successfully add a block into the network receive a reward for their work. As the technology evolved over the years, this "mining" process has become more challenging with miners facing long periods without positive cash flow, while still having costs associated. This resulting business architecture has driving participants away from the technology, jeopardizing its operations, and defying its progression. In order to cope with this issue, an alternative to provide miners' financial sustainability is to join a mining pool, which main purpose is to mitigate this cash flow sparsity by sharing the (more-recurrent) rewards obtained by the group. Therefore, in this work, we propose a reward sharing methodology for mining pools based on the Nucleolus of a stochastic cooperative game. A risk-averse value functional based on the Conditional Value-at-Risk (CVaR) is used to characterize the game's certainty equivalent. Two numerical experiments were conducted in this work: (i) one based on a small, illustrative network; and (ii) one derived from real data of the Bitcoin-refunded Blockchain network. The focus of the experiments is on the incremental value of the proposed methodology over using intuitive allocations (uniform and based on computational power) and in what extent the relative increase in the mining likelihood by playing as a group benefits the pool stability. Finally, we discuss and numerically analyze a nested procedure based on the proposed Nucleolus-based allocation seeking for higher "fairness" in sharing the pool rewards.

The purpose of this study was to analyze big data to identify the sub-dimensions of ethical consumption, as well as the consumption value associated with ethical consumption that changes over time. For this study, data were collected from Naver and Daum using the keyword ‘ethical consumption’ and frequency and matrix data were extracted through Textom, for the period January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018. In addition, a twoway mode network analysis was conducted using the UCINET 6.0 program and visualized using the NetDraw function. The results of text mining show increasing keyword frequency year-on-year, indicating that interest in ethical consumption has grown. The sub-dimensions derived for 2014 and 2015 are fair trade, ethical consumption, eco-friendly products, and cooperatives and for 2016 are fair trade, ethical consumption, eco-friendly products and animal welfare. The results of deriving consumption value keywords were classified as emotional value, social value, functional value and conditional value. The influence of functional value was found to be growing over time. Through network analysis, the relationship between the sub-dimensions of ethical consumption and consumption values derived each year from 2014 to 2018 showed a significantly strong correlation between eco-friendly product consumption and emotional value, social value, functional value and conditional value.

Progressive loss of functional neurons is typically characterized as neurodegeneration. This is particularly pronounced during aging and results in debilitating conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Symptoms appear typically after 70–80% neuronal loss, resulting in irreversible damage. Several drugs have been clinically approved but they only alleviate symptoms and additionally lead to undesirable side effects. Hence there is a dire need for drugs and/or supplements which address this lacuna. Functional foods are known to offer health benefits beyond their attributed nutritional values. Unlike dietary supplements which are made from foods or food-like substances with enriched nutritional value, functional foods are foods that are modified for greater nutritional value. Conceptually, as an expansion of dietary supplements, functional foods are known to be neuroprotective. Here we discuss functional foods which can potentially be used as adjunctive therapy, with a note on the regulatory compliance.

This study examines the impact of Hanok experience on tourists’ attitude and behavioral intention using the experience economy ( Pine and Gilmore, 1998 ) and the experienced utility theory ( Kahneman et al., 1997 ). Specifically, the study explores how tourists’ experiences are associated with a Value-Attitude-Behavior (VAB) model in the context of a heritage tourism attraction such as Jeonju Hanok Village in South Korea. A total of 323 responses were examined using SEM analysis. The results revealed that educational, entertainment, and escapism experiences significantly influenced functional value. Functional value had a significant relationship with attitude, which was positively related to behavioral intention. The results indicate the interplay of tourists’ experiences with the VAB model. The study provides theoretical and practical implications for tourism and hospitality academics and practitioners.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between consumption value and consumption propensity and tourist satisfaction and to verify the mediating effect of consumption propensity on tourists visiting China. A total of 300 surveys were conducted from December 1, 2018, to January 30, 2019, Overall, 286 surveys were conducted for SPSS 23.0. The empirical results of this study are as follows. First, five sub-factors of the consumption value were selected: social value, functional value, epistemic value, emotional value, and conditional value. For consumption propensity, two sub-factors labeled practical propensity and others-conscious propensity were chosen. Tourist satisfaction was set to be a single factor. Second, as for the results of identifying the importance of sub-factors of the consumption value, the order was social value, functional value, epistemic value, emotional value, and conditional value. Third, the relationship between the consumption value and tourist satisfaction showed that all factors of consumption value had a significant positive effect on tourist satisfaction. Fourth, the result of examining the relationship between the consumption value and consumption propensity showed that the factor of consumption value such as social value, functional value, epistemic value, the emotional value had a significant positive effect on tourist satisfaction while the conditional value had not, and all five factors of consumption value and others-conscious propensity had significant positive regression weight. Fifth. the result of checking the relationship between the consumption propensity and tourist satisfaction showed that all factors of consumption propensity had a significant positive effect on tourist satisfaction. Sixth, the analyses of mediating effect revealed as follows; the relationship between consumption value and tourist satisfaction was partially mediated by four factors, functional, emotional, epistemic, social, of the practical propensity of consumption propensity; and the relationship between consumption value and tourist satisfaction was partially mediated by all factors, of the others-conscious propensity of consumption propensity.
