AbstractThe h-index is a widely used scientometric indicator on the researcher level working with a simple combination of publication and citation counts. In this article, we pursue two goals, namely the collection of empirical data about researchers’ personal estimations of the importance of the h-index for themselves as well as for their academic disciplines, and on the researchers’ concrete knowledge on the h-index and the way of its calculation. We worked with an online survey (including a knowledge test on the calculation of the h-index), which was finished by 1081 German university professors. We distinguished between the results for all participants, and, additionally, the results by gender, generation, and field of knowledge. We found a clear binary division between the academic knowledge fields: For the sciences and medicine the h-index is important for the researchers themselves and for their disciplines, while for the humanities and social sciences, economics, and law the h-index is considerably less important. Two fifths of the professors do not know details on the h-index or wrongly deem to know what the h-index is and failed our test. The researchers’ knowledge on the h-index is much smaller in the academic branches of the humanities and the social sciences. As the h-index is important for many researchers and as not all researchers are very knowledgeable about this author-specific indicator, it seems to be necessary to make researchers more aware of scholarly metrics literacy.

G. Batechko, O. V. Shelimanova, S.V. Shostak ABSTRACT The relevance of increasing the energy efficiency in buildings of domestic higher educational institutions is determined not only by the need to save energy resources, but also by the fact that such “green campuses” can become the basis for the formation of an ecological and energy efficient lifestyle for today's youth. An integrated approach to the selection of energy-saving measures in a building requires the models of thermal comfort which take into account the intensity of human activity, the type of clothing, the speed of air movement in the room, relative humidity and the like. The purpose of this study is to improve the efficiency of the energy system of campus buildings by taking into account the interaction of energy sources, the heating system, the thermal properties of the enclosing structures and the standardized parameters of the indoor microclimate. Along with an integrated approach to the problem under study, taking into account the necessary comprehensive analysis of energy-saving measures in the system "heat source - enclosing structures - external parameters", attention should be paid to the indoor climate and the problem of meeting human needs for thermal comfort. With the help of a miniature temperature datalogger RC-1B, a round-the-clock monitoring of temperatures was carried out in some rooms of the educational building No. 8 of National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine during the heating season. The analysis of the experimental data shows that despite the improvement of the thermal accumulative properties of the outer fencing of the building after the implementation of thermal modernization work, the temperatures in the room do not always correspond to the norm. Thus, when implementing energy-saving measures, it is impossible to violate the conditions of comfort in rooms in which thermal equilibrium is maintained in the human body and there is no tension in its thermoregulation system.

Shtepa, A. Kozir, A. Novosad, N. Zaiets ABSTRACT The research methodology for anaerobic whey fermentation was based on the fact that the community of methane-forming microorganisms consists of three types of bacteria, and the efficiency of biogas plants depends on various factors, one of which is the uniformity and homogeneity of the mass loaded into the bioreactor. When checking the effect of cavitation ultrasonic treatment on milk whey, laboratory biogas plants were justified and created, with the help of which the effect of treatment on the release of biogas and the acceleration of the rate of its production was studied. The research methodology for intensifying the growth of microgreens was based on the fact that when treated with ultrasound, seeds are disinfected, covered with microcracks from 1 to 10 microns, which leads to an increase in the flow of water and air to the seeds, and seed germination is also accelerated. The seeds of rape variety "Hephaestus" were treated in a glass flask with a volume of 1000 ml. Water from a closed water supply unit, where the Lena sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) was grown, was used as a working medium. In both cases, an electrical unit operating at a frequency of 22 kHz (power up to 76 W) was used as a source of ultrasound. Microgreen samples, which were treated with ultrasound, showed a practical result of an increase of up to 78 % (power 42 W) from ideal, and when processing with a higher power, the increase reached 97% (power 76 W). An analysis of the germination rate of samples with the same processing power showed that in samples in which the processing time was longer, the percentage of germination was higher: by 5 % when processing with a power of 76 W, and by 3 % when processing with a power of 42 W. The results obtained substantiated further research in the direction of constructing adaptive control systems for ultrasonic intensification of biotechnological processes based on artificial intelligence.

Introduction of the scientometric indicator for citation quality evaluation is substantiated. The author suggests introducing the term “Citation locality coefficient”. To define permissible level of citation locality, two criteria are introduced: (1) for regional researchers, the number of citations in the local scientific journals and (2) for regional researchers, the number of citations in publications affiliated with the regional organizations. The calculation logics based on Herfindahl index and permissible self-citation ratio is substantiated.

The article reveals the deterrent eff ect of the scientometric factor on the development of economic research based on the analysis of publication activity in American economic journals. The author systematizes the main trends in the development of modern economic research. It is shown that publications in the top fi ve journals in the United States infl uence the direction of research in the economy, career paths and the reputation of young researchers, decisions of funding agencies, as well as the ratings of departments and universities. Diff erences in citation rates between the top fi ve journals and other top-level journals are noted. It is shown that the orientation to publications in the top “fi ve” as the main scientometric indicator stimulates careerism and restrains the development of new ideas. Possible ways of overcoming the existing institutional trap are considered.

Purpose – This paper aims to propose a new qualitative indicator for the evaluation of the productions of researchers in any discipline. Design/methodology/approach – Based on the study of existing quantitative indicators, the authors’ approach consisted of the hybridization of two indicators. This hybridization is based on the individual H_index (Hi_index) and H_index contemporary (Hc_index) weighted by qualitative factors. The initial sources of the data are online bibliographic databases, such as Google Scholar and Publish or Perish. Findings – A new scientometric indicator was used to compare the scientific production quality of researchers and their classification (as part of a research community) as the classification of national and international research institutions. The authors have applied a new indicator to compare and classify the members of their laboratory, RIADI, according to their quality of scientific production. Practical implications – The indicator is an improvement of the H_index. It is a measure that can have an impact on society (influencing research attitudes, affecting quality of research). By this contribution, the authors measure more than one aspect by involving all the external factors that can affect the quality of research. Originality/value – This paper fulfils a gap in the literature concerning the absence of a qualitative indicator among the set of existing quantitative measures. Additionally, this paper addresses the limitations of the existing qualitative practices, such as peer review and citation analysis. In the new qualitative indicator, the authors involve all of these qualitative aspects: the influence of the age of the paper, the number of co-authors, the order of the co-authors, the impact factor of journals and the conference rankings.
