MODERNISM IN “MABEL” AND “THE ROCKING-HORSE WINNER”

Modernism in writing had influences or impacts from the Industrial Revolution that took place before and after the turn of the 20th century. Unsurprisingly, it affected many changes in human’s thought. In this article, I discussed influences of the changes that are represented in two short stories titled “Mabel” by W.S. Maugham and “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence.

STUDENTS PERCEPTION OF GAMIFICATION TO PROMOTE CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT AND MOTIVATION IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The development of English teaching and learning is also influenced by rapid changes in technology as we enter the industry of 4.0. Education and teaching-related field areas such as pedagogy, teaching media, the courses, etc. are the subjects which have been impacted by technology. Meanwhile, the lack of motivation is one of the obstacles that students faced. In this research, the researcher used one online-gamification tool called 'Kahoot!' in a senior high school to promote their engagement and motivation. The case study and questionnaire were used for the method of data collection. The data collection process was conducted for two months on campus. The meaningful gamification concept was applied through Kahoot! at the end of the meeting, and the last session they answered the questionnaires. Thirty-five students participated in this study, and the result of the study showed students’ responses which are discussed under two main topics; Students’ engagement and motivation, and learning outcomes.

EXAMINING THE ISSUE OF ABOLISHING ENGLISH TUITION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL IN INDONESIA

This paper examines the reasons behind the philosophy of the Indonesian government’s decision on abolishing English tuition in primary school. The Indonesian government has recently omitted English as compulsory tuition since English has been excluded in the curriculum at the primary level. The findings show that people have misinterpreted about whether English at the primary level is a compulsory, local-content or extracurricular tuition. In addition, it is found that teaching English at a young age is not practically efficient in Indonesia due to lack competence of teachers, unrelated syllabus and uninteresting teaching methods. Furthermore, the misconception of younger foreign language learners and cultural discrepancy are the other key findings in the issue provided. Ultimately, the implications of this article have given new insights on the issue of abolishing English tuition, whether it is effective or significant for primary students in Indonesia at this moment and condition.

TEACHING VOCABULARY TO YOUNG LEARNER USING VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AT ENGLISH COURSE

Vocabulary is one of the important elements of the English language. There are many media which can be used in teaching vocabulary to young learners. In this research, the researcher used video on YouTube to teach vocabulary. The research focuses on how students’ engagement during the implementation of video on YouTube in teaching vocabulary at an English course. In this research, the researcher used descriptive–qualitative research, and observation and documentation were used for collecting the data. This research was conducted at an English course in Bogor, in which the participants are seven young learners at grade two. The findings of this research were classified into two themes; students’ response to the classroom activities and the teacher instruction, and student’s engagement to the use of video on YouTube. It is revealed that most young learners at an English course were engaged during the implementation of the video on YouTube in teaching vocabulary. They also gave positive responses to the learning activity and preferred learning English vocabulary by using video on YouTube.

THE ROLE OF INTERNAL CONSTRAINTS AND FANTASY ELEMENT IN CREATIVE LANGUAGE TASKS FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNERS

For the past few years, language teaching, especially for foreign learners, has become more and more creative. Creativity has been deemed paramount in the history of language use by human beings, including day-to-day language play and literary works. It is also suggested that creative language tasks are helpful for learners when it comes to writing. This small-scale study involving two Indonesian university students in Auckland was conducted to find out how adult learners, at any rate, take advantage of imagination in language learning. It examines the role of internal constraints and fantasy element in helping adult learners create meanings in doing creative language tasks. The results show that these two components in creative language tasks could help adult learners play with language. By combining prior knowledge and existing linguistic resources, the participants came up with new meanings from previously known concepts which did not seem to relate to each other. Specifically, input and outcome constraints are useful, while external constraints should be left out. Fantasy element is also beneficial as it requires an act of imagining. For recommendation, to stimulate students to experiment with language, teachers need to design creative tasks which have appealing topics and require them to collaborate.

NEEDS ANALYSIS FOR ENGLISH TEACHING/ CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN INDONESIAN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS

Although Indonesian students have learnt English for 6 years when they graduate, there are still many of them who cannot speak the foreign language. One of the important factors which must be taken care of is the syllabus or curriculum of teaching English. The syllabus should be prepared in such a way so that it can match the needs of the students and, in the end, can function well to make students able to speak English when they graduate. A small research has been made to find the target situation analysis, objective needs analysis, subjective needs analysis and present situation analysis (Dudley-Evan & St. John, 1998). The respondents of the research are students from private and government senior high schools. All the respondents belong to Gen Z, who are used to using digital tools and the internet in their daily life. The results show that Gen Z prefers to use digital tools in learning English at school. This study is expected to propose a syllabus design which deploys technology or digital tools in teaching.

BOARD-BASED LEARNING EXPERIENCE: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TOWARDS THE IMPROVEMENT OF STUDENTS’ INFORMATION LITERACY INTEREST AND ACADEMIC RESULT

Teaching information literacy has always been a challenging issue to tackle. Classical teaching and learning activities require students to sit, to read, to understand and to be able to answer questions to meet the minimum accomplishment criteria. To undergo joyful learning, this board-based learning experience has enabled the teacher to manifest varied teaching strategies despite the limited resources and also to facilitate students to develop their reading, communication, and social skills. The findings of this study indicate that this experience has represented positive impacts toward the improvement of students’ information literacy interest and academic results. Not only relatively livelier learning experience, it has stimulated students to use mind map strategy to locate keywords and to link them with details in an informational text, resulting in the progress of the individual score progress by average which reached 21.67 points. Special notes should be addressed to the teachers or other practitioners that we should always give attention to students to find ways to connect main ideas, supporting ideas and blend them into the context. As the conclusion, the teacher should be able to enhance their teaching skill by integrating any teaching strategies.
