The paper presents results of experiments of gas admixing foam spray drying of maltodextrin in co-current spray tower. Significant effect of feed foaming on particle sphericity, angle of repose, apparent and bulk density, Hausner ratio and porosity was found. Number of broken particles achieved 60 % for high foaming gas rate (GLR) and inlet air temperature due to particle overheating and bubble expansion. Analysis of the experiments results allowed to determine optimal range of operating conditions to reduce number of damaged particles, to around 15 % for the highest GLR and to minimize product degradation. The effect of heat on the quality of spray dried Tongkat Ali extract was investigated at three different air inlet temperatures (100°C, 180°C and 2200C). Response surface methodology employing the Box-Behnken Design was employed to hunt for the optimum operating conditions at these temperatures. Good retentions of eurycomanone, total polysaccharides and glycosaponins were exhibited during the spray drying process. However, protein was found to be susceptible to thermal degradation during the spray drying process. Use of high air inlet temperatures (i.e. 1800C and 2200C) in spray drying led to greater process yield, lower moisture contents, produced non-sticky particles, and resulted in good powder size distribution of Tongkat Ali extract compared to spray drying at 1000C.

AbstractThe powder mixture of gum arabic and maltodextrin was produced by spray drying. The inlet air temperature of spray dryer was varied from 160 °C to 260 °C and the maltodextrin content was varied from 0 to 50 % in the feed solution with the concentration of 42.5 % (w/v) total solids by weight. The properties of the finished product were characterized to examine the impact of changes in these operating parameters. The results showed that: the inlet air temperature had a stronger influence on the properties of finished product than the MD/GA ratio, whereas the feed rate was more clearly affected by the MD/GA ratio. Two optimal parameters obtained include MD/GA ratio equal to 0.615 and the inlet air temperature of spray dryer Te = 258 °C.

Determination of material removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR) and hole taper (Ta) is a challenging task for manufacturing engineers from the productivity and accuracy point of view of the symmetrical and nonsymmetrical holes due to hole sinking electro discharge micro machining (HS-EDMM) process. Thus, mathematical models for quick prediction of these aspects are needed because experimental determinations of process performances are always tedious and time consuming. Not only prediction but determination of optimum parameter for optimization of process performance is also required. This paper attempts to apply a hybrid mathematical approach comprising of Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) for prediction and Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) coupled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for optimization with multiple responses of HS-EDMM of Invar-36. Experiments were conducted to generate dataset for training and testing of the network where input parameters consist of gap voltage, capacitance of capacitor and the resulting performance parameters MRR, TWR and Ta. The results indicate that the hybrid approach is capable to predict process output and optimize process performance with reasonable accuracy under varied operating conditions of HS-EDMM. The proposed approach would be extendable to other configurations of EDMM processes for different material.
