We describe a simple model of the dynamics of adoption of agri-environmental measures by farmers in Europe. Farmers choices are based on their evaluation of the economic advantages of taking environmental premiums in exchange for environment friendly practices, plus imitation terms taking into account the information that they get from neighbours which have already made their own choice. We show that under a large set of social network topologies and hypotheses on distribution of farmers characteristics, the outcome of the social processes, namely premium uptake rate, depends upon local characteristics of farmers and their network. It is not directly related to average characteristics. Some conclusions and recommendations about policy implementation can then be driven.

Abstract:This paper shows an analysis of the national and international scientific literature published on the use of social networking systems in education (Social Network Sites) between 2008 and 2013. The main objective of this work was to know how the research on this topic was being conducted in scientific journals, published in English or Spanish, in order to identify variables such as the educational level at which it is developed, the epistemological paradigms used or the most recurrent research topics. An analysis of the content from a total of 105 articles in scientific journals with peer review, was performed (62 international papers and 43 from the national context). This work evidences that it is a recurring topic in the research community, that a diversity of epistemological approaches are being used to conduct these kind of researches and those which analyzes the use of SNS as educational tools are the dominant ones. While there are some differences between the papers published in international and national journals, papers in our context are in line with those published in the international scientific community.

The policy of payment for forest environmental services (PFES) has been implemented in Vietnam since 2011 and in Hoa Binh province since 2013. Governmental agencies have conventionally implemented PFES at central, provincial, and district levels. However, there areshared responsibilitiesof the governmental organizations and otherstakeholders at different levels in reality. Using social network analysis (SNA) indicators shows that the provincial Forest Forest Protection and Development Fundplays the most important role among involving stakeholders. Both density and centrality measurements have shown that the stakeholders in the PFES implementation network in Hoa Binh province have good coherence. Additionally,district-level governmental organizations and Viettel TelecomCompany have showntheir powerlessnessin the policy implementation network

A significant failure rate exists when it comes to organizational change. Managers understand the importance of organizational change, but many of them do not know how to execute it effectively. This study examines the reasons why the implementation of organizational change is so complicated and it suggests ways to break down the barriers to change.

Purpose For a university to be a prime mover for sustainability transformation, all units of the university should contribute. However, organizational change in educational institutions is often studied by examining specific domains such as research or operation in isolation. This results in a less-than-complete picture of the potential for university-wide change. In contrast, this paper aims to examine the network of social relations that determine the diffusion and sustainability of change efforts across a university. The authors use McGill University (Canada) as a model system to study the network of actors concerned with sustainability to learn how this network influences the penetration of sustainability throughout the university. Design/methodology/approach To explore the existing social structure, the authors use an innovative approach to illuminate the influence of social structure on organizational change efforts. Using a mixed methods approach combining social network analysis with qualitative interview data, the authors examine the influence of the social structure on sustainability transformation at McGill University. The authors conducted 52 interviews between January and April 2019 with representatives of different sustainability groups at the university across six domains (research, education, administration, operations, connectivity and students). Findings The authors find that McGill University has a centralized system with a low density. The network is centralized around the Office of Sustainability. The limited cross-domain interaction appears to be a result of differences in motivation and priorities. This leads to a network that has many actors but only a limited number of connections between them. The quality of the relationships is often utilitarian, with only a few relationships aiming for support and mutual growth. Originality/value This study brings together social network analysis, sustainability transformation and higher education in a new way. It also illustrates the complexity of guiding a large organization, such as a university, toward a sustainability transformation. Furthermore, it reveals the importance of considering each part of the university as part of an interconnected network rather than as isolated components.

Participation in a social network can have it's perks. Thanks to the O'Reilly Group on Facebook (that other social network), I received a review copy of Wikipedia: The Missing Manual. But why would a scientist want to know how to write and edit articles ...

The presented article is focused on the comprehensive study of the issues connected with text processing on social media. First and foremost, the standpoint of the so-called ordinary language philosophy is examined. It holds the view of the meaningfulness of words in sentences as being primarily determined by the ways in which they were put to use in the practical activity and the role they played in a broader context of the lifestyle. The contemporary lifestyle is inherent in social media with its virtual discourse which is determined not only by the words used but also by the relationships between the actors that generate the content. Second, the linguistic aspects of this issue are discussed. The modeling covering the structure of social media as well as users' texts are examined with regard to computational approaches to the broadening of the context concept in Frege's contextual principle. The examples of successful mining of such model both for traditional linguistic tasks and for the use in information filtering are provided. However, it is necessary to know how to broaden and narrow down the context. This aspect is examined by the example of clustering of the largest European social network VK
