The purpose of this qualitative case study is to gain insights into the activities and outcomes associated with participation in the Temple Education Scholars (TES) dual enrollment program, an initiative for seniors attending high school in a large city in the Northeast region of the United States. The objectives of this study are twofold: (1) to inform the design and implementation of dual enrollment programs as a model for facilitating students’ transition from secondary to postsecondary education and supporting their future success in college; and (2) to describe the short-term impact of participation in a dual enrollment program on participants’ choices about postsecondary education. Our analysis revealed the ways that participating in this dual enrollment program shaped students’ attitudes, motivations, and perceptions about college knowledge, college readiness, and college opportunities. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.

Abstract. This study explored city residents’ collective geo-tagged behaviors in response to rainstorms using the number of location request (NLR) data generated by smartphone users. We examined the rainstorms, flooding, NLR anomalies, as well as the associations among them in eight selected cities across the mainland China. The time series NLR clearly reflects cities’ general diurnal rhythm and the total NLR is moderately correlated with the total city population. Anomalies of NLR were identified at both the city and grid scale using the S-H-ESD method. Analysis results manifested that the NLR anomalies at the city and grid levels are well associated with rainstorms, indicating city residents request more location-based services (e.g. map navigation, car hailing, food delivery, etc.) when there is a rainstorm. However, sensitivity of the city residents’ collective geo-tagged behaviors in response to rainstorms varies in different cities as shown by different peak rainfall intensity thresholds. Significant high peak rainfall intensity tends to trigger city flooding, which lead to increased location-based requests as shown by positive anomalies on the time series NLR.

Productivity improvement programs in the public sector have recently become a popular topic of concern among both academics and practitioners. Many methods of productivity enhancement programs have been discussed ranging from the privatization of services to improved management training. This article describes how a behaviorally-based management training program was used to increase employee productivity in a large city department. The results show that nonmonetary rewards can substantially increase employee performance. Group earned time off, individual employee time off, and goal setting and feedback were all effective for improving employee performance. These cost effective techniques saved the city over $80,000 the first year of implementation. The case study is described by the manager who conducted the project.

Sport and urban planning – with Copenhagen as case study This article deals with the field of sport and urban planning in large cities, with special focus on the municipality of Copenhagen from 1988-2003. In the first place a situation marked by decline is shown to have existed in the field of sport in Copenhagen over recent years (especially in the central section of the city). This provides the opportunity to pose the question of primary concern: How can sport, city life and urban planning be conceived in relation to future guidelines on the politics of sport and on urban planning in a large city such as Copenhagen? The task here is to recommend a way out of decline through an analysis of the area of “sport and urban planning”. Looked at more specifically, in an attempt to break with possibly restrictive thinking patterns, questions have to asked as to the reasoning behind existing politics on this area. What forms of authoritative and legitimate rationalization (and what conditions of power) have been dominating the politics of sport in Copenhagen from 1988- 2003? And how should future guidelines be formulated in order to make sport a more integral part of the city? On this matter a hypothesis is put forward here that sport in a municipal context is subject to a dominant planning norm, which is devoted to an idea of “obligational fellowship”, and that this norm can be restrictive in regard to new thinking on how to make sport a more integral part of the city.

The article examines the mobility of the large city population with 800 thousand inhabitants where there is no off-street transport. As a result of simulation modeling with a macroscopic transport model of the city, there was established the influence of the chargeable parking facilities` cost, the length of lanes for public transport and bike paths on the share of movements by private and public transport, cycling, pedestrian movements. An estimation of changes in passenger turnover at bus stops and passenger traffic was performed. The impact of the new pedestrian bridge across the river Tura is demonstrated in relation to the resident transportation routes change.
