Abstract. This study explored city residents’ collective geo-tagged behaviors in response to rainstorms using the number of location request (NLR) data generated by smartphone users. We examined the rainstorms, flooding, NLR anomalies, as well as the associations among them in eight selected cities across the mainland China. The time series NLR clearly reflects cities’ general diurnal rhythm and the total NLR is moderately correlated with the total city population. Anomalies of NLR were identified at both the city and grid scale using the S-H-ESD method. Analysis results manifested that the NLR anomalies at the city and grid levels are well associated with rainstorms, indicating city residents request more location-based services (e.g. map navigation, car hailing, food delivery, etc.) when there is a rainstorm. However, sensitivity of the city residents’ collective geo-tagged behaviors in response to rainstorms varies in different cities as shown by different peak rainfall intensity thresholds. Significant high peak rainfall intensity tends to trigger city flooding, which lead to increased location-based requests as shown by positive anomalies on the time series NLR.

It is a challenge, if not impossible, to directly observe CGTBs during a real-time matter. This study used the number of location requests (NLR) data generated by smartphone users for a variety of purposes such as map navigation, car hailing, and food delivery to infer the dynamics of CGTBs in response to rainstorms in eight Chinese cities. We examined rainstorms, flooding, and NLR anomalies, as well as the associations among them, in eight selected cities across mainland China. The time series NLR clearly reflects cities' general diurnal rhythm, and the total NLR is moderately correlated with the total city population. Anomalies of the NLR were identified at both the city and grid scale using the Seasonal Hybrid Extreme Studentized Deviate (S-H-ESD) method. Analysis results demonstrated that the NLR anomalies at the city and grid levels are well associated with rainstorms, indicating that city residents request more location-based services (e.g., map navigation, car hailing, food delivery, etc.) when there is a rainstorm. However, the sensitivity of the city residents' collective geotagged behaviors in response to rainstorms varies in different cities as shown by different peak rainfall intensity thresholds. Pluvial flooding in Badalona (Spain) occurs during high rainfall intensity events, which in the future could be more frequent according to the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In this context, the present study aims at quantifying the potential impacts of climate change for the city of Badalona. A comprehensive pluvial flood multi risk assessment has been carried out for the entire municipality. The assessment has a twofold target: People safety, based on both pedestrians’ and vehicles’ stability, and impacts on the economic sector in terms of direct damages on properties and vehicles, and indirect damages due to businesses interruption. Risks and damages have also been assessed for the projected future rainfall conditions which enabled the comparison with the current ones, thereby estimating their potential increment. Moreover, the obtained results should be the first step to assess the efficiency of adaptation measures. The novelty of this paper is the integration of a detailed 1D/2D urban drainage model with multiple risk criteria. Although, the proposed methodology was tested for the case study of Badalona (Spain), it can be considered generally applicable to other urban areas affected by pluvial flooding.

Purpose. Discussion regarding the development potential of large cities with respect to the idea of slow tourism, especially in the context of designated areas of specific city districts. References were made to the city of Cracow. Method. Analysis of literature on the subject made references to issues related to the idea of slow movement with respect to cities (slow city) and tourism (slow tourism). Analysis of Cracow’s case, in the context of the establishment of a slow district which is scheduled in the city, allowed for practical references with respect to the discussed issue. Findings. The performed analyses showed the complexity of the issue of slow movement, but also its attractiveness for large cities and tourists (e.g. on account of environmental protection). However, popularisation of the idea of slow movement also entails risks, especially related to its mass character and, in effect, its commercialisation. Research and conclusion limitations. Analysis of literature on the subject only referred to a fragment of the issue and case analysis focused on only one municipal centre. Practical implications. References were made to specific binding tasks from the Tourism Development Strategy of Cracow. Originality. References were made to a large municipal centre which, in the context of the slow movement idea, is a rare subject of academic papers. The subject matter was connected to specific examples of slow districts, planned in the strategic document for Cracow. Type of paper. Overview-type article and case study.

In recent years rapid expansion of populations, disruption of ecological environments, and power shortages to areas of high population density in undeveloped areas have appeared in major cities in China. Well-planned population distribution in a city has become one of the key development strategies of urbanization in the country. Taking Beijing as a case-study and using 2010 as the base period, this study simulates city population size and distribution during 2011–2030 using the CA-MAS model. The results showed that (1) the unplanned layout of Beijing’s population is inefficient and will result in the slow agglomeration of populations into surrounding small towns, (2) the suburbanization of the population (while employment opportunities remain centralized) increases the stress of the city commuters, (3) the current policy guiding the distribution of residential and commercial areas is effective, accelerating the formation of small town clusters, which play a role in the city’s radiation and diffusion, contributing to reducing urban commuter stress, and (4) promoting the homogenization of public resources, planning the development of a multicenter urban area, and promoting mixed use (commercial and residential) zoning are the main measures recommended to strengthen the sustainability of Beijing’s urban development and to optimize spatial layout.

AbstractWithin the scope of urban climate modeling, weather analogs are used to downscale large-scale reanalysis-based information to station time series. Two novel approaches of weather analogs are introduced which allow a day-by-day comparison with observations within the validation period and which are easily adaptable to future periods for projections. Both methods affect the first level of analogy which is usually based on selection of circulation patterns. First, the time series were bias corrected and detrended before subsamples were determined for each specific day of interest. Subsequently, the normal vector of the standardized regression planes (NVEC) or the center of gravity (COG) of the normalized absolute circulation patterns was used to determine a point within an artificial coordinate system for each day. The day(s) which exhibit(s) the least absolute distance(s) between the artificial points of the day of interest and the days of the subsample is/are used as analog or subsample for the second level of analogy, respectively. Here, the second level of analogy is a second selection process based on the comparison of gridded temperature data between the analog subsample and the day of interest. After the analog selection process, the trends of the observation were added to the analog time series. With respect to air temperature and the exceedance of the 90th temperature quantile, the present study compares the performance of both analog methods with an already existing analog method and a multiple linear regression. Results show that both novel analog approaches can keep up with existing methods. One shortcoming of the methods presented here is that they are limited to local or small regional applications. In contrast, less pre-processing and the small domain size of the circulation patterns lead to low computational costs.

Small water reservoirs have represented an important water feature of the Central European landscape since the Middle Ages. In our study, we focused on researching the historical functions of those reservoirs and their changes through time. We recorded 169 mentions to the functions of selected ponds in the selected four historical reservoirs around the town of Čáslav (Central Bohemia Region), using a combination of written, cartographic, and iconographic archival sources. Fish-related production functions were most frequently mentioned. However, others were also important mainly for the development of the town – the accumulation of water for the needs of mills and industry, and the supply of the city population through the historical aquifers from these reservoirs. They often served as recreational areas for residents. Our research pointed to the multifunctionality of small water reservoirs and the fact that the change of the main functions was mainly related to the change in the owner of the reservoir.

Based on the resource water shortage cities as the research object in this paper, we use the factor analysis method to evaluate the degree of water shortage in the resource water shortage cities, while these factors include the unit of GDP water consumption, the unit of industrial output water consumption, per capita water resource, the city population, per capita domestic water consumption and the average annual rainfall. We also take Tianjin, which is most seriously lacking water resource, as a case study, and the case reveals the importance of urban stormwater utilization in the resource water shortage cities. Finally, we propose some strategic measures to utilize urban stormwater resource in the resource water shortage cities.

The fire incident in karaoke buildings in Indonesia which claimed many lives has occurred several times. According to the National Academy of Science US, the smoke toxins that come out of the fire disaster cause 50-80% of deaths. Refers to the data, it is necessary to check further about the building material response to fire during a fire incident. Masterpiece Signature Karaoke is a karaoke building that classified as large and magnificent in the city of Medan which has various material so that it is necessary to study the interior material as passive fire protection. The purpose is to find out how to assess the reliability of fire passive protection regard to the interior materials and recommendations or descriptions of right interior material planning using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This method is efficacious to solve the problem of reliability in using interior materials as passive fire protection in Masterpiece Signature Family KTV Medan building with the results of an Adequate Level of reliability. Then, design recommendations were given for the use of interior materials in karaoke building to improve the reliability results to be better.The results are useful as information for other researchers and karaoke buildings regarding passive fire protection systems at the Masterpiece Signature Family KTV Medan.
