Non-intrusive visualization of the structure of flames can offer us many advantages in studying the reaction mechanisms of combustion and observing special distributions of the parameters required for the development of equipment such as jet engines and gas turbines. Process tomography is a relatively new technique for such a task, but is useful owing to its fast speed and capability of detecting signals related to ionizations caused by chemical reactions and thermal effects. Electric capacitance tomography (ECT) is one of the process tomographic techniques. ECT usually comprises a sensor array of electrodes that detect permittivity variations in the measuring zone, a data-logging device and a computer that controls data acquisition and carries out image reconstruction. There have been studies on ECT imaging of flames; however, ECT has not been exploited sufficiently to reveal the inner structure of the flames. In this study, a sensor with planar electrodes is created, and the associated three-dimensional sensitivity map is generated by the finite-element method to detect flame structure. A series of experiments are carried out covering a range of feed rates of fuel and air. Data are collected by the ECT sensor and hardware. The results of the ECT reconstruction show good agreement with actual features, and the structure of the flame is found. This opens up a new route for the study of flames. The huge industrial data recorded by several years in copper bioleaching operations represents an opportunity for the technology improvement. A systematic approach is being developed to get insights from the field data from an industrial process and to deliver the obtained knowledge with the aim to serve as the foundation for optimal industrial decision making even in presence of inherent process variations. The development of this Decision Support System (DSS) considers a Q-PCR array, a database for data logging and storage, the application of suitable statistical and computational tools for data analyses and knowledge acquiring and finally the creation of a system of knowledge translation to transform it into action (operational suggestions). The user can accurately retrieve data and design similar matches to the historic operation to get e.g. the expected metallurgical performance of a strip based on its mineralogical parameters. In addition, the user can get computed information and recommendations that should be analyzed. We will discuss the process followed to construct the base of knowledge of the DSS.

Personal computers (PCs) are a powerful resource in the EM Laboratory, both as a means of automating the monitoring and control of microscopes, and as a tool for quantifying the interpretation of data. Not only is a PC more versatile than a piece of dedicated data logging equipment, but it is also substantially cheaper. In this tutorial the practical principles of using a PC for these types of activities will be discussed.The PC can form the basis of a system to measure, display, record and store the many parameters which characterize the operational conditions of the EM. In this mode it is operating as a data logger. The necessary first step is to find a suitable source from which to measure each of the items of interest. It is usually possible to do this without having to make permanent corrections or modifications to the EM.

Purpose This study investigated average hours of daily hearing aid use and speech-language outcomes for children age 3 to 6 years of age with hearing loss. Method Objective measures of hearing aid use were collected via data logging. Speech and language measures included standardized measures GFTA-2, CELF Preschool-2 and additional item analyses for the word structure subtest CELF Preschool-2 and the GFTA-2. Results Hearing aid use was full time for 33% of the children (n=3; M=8.84 hours; Range: 2.9–12.1) at the beginning of the study, and for 78% at the end of the study (n=7; M=9.89 hours; Range 2.6–13.2). All participants demonstrated an improvement in articulation and language standard scores and percentiles however continued to demonstrate areas of weakness in sounds high-frequency in nature. Conclusions Through early identification and fitting, children gain access to speech sounds. Both standardized measures and individual language analysis should be used to identify and support children with hearing loss in language and subsequent literacy development.

Examining the life cycle of a representative selection of films, and discussing their preservation and mediation in the digital age, this book presents a detailed case study of how informational cinema is shaped by, and indeed shapes, its cultural, political and technological contexts.The book combines close textual analysis of a broad range of films with detailed accounts of their commissioning, production, distribution and reception in Denmark and abroad, drawing on Actor-Network Theory to emphasise the role of a wide range of entities in these processes. It considers a broad range of genres and sub-genres, including industrial process films, public information films, art films, the city symphony, the essay film, and many more. It also maps international networks of informational and documentary films in the post-war period, and explores the role of informational film in Danish cultural and political history.

ABSTRACTIn many industrial applications involving granular media, knowledge about the structural transformations suffered during the industrial process is desirable. Optical techniques are noninvasive, fast, and versatile tools for monitoring such transformations. We have recently introduced optical path-length spectroscopy as a new technique for random media investigation. The principle of the method is to use a partially coherent source in a Michelson interferometer, where the fields from a reference mirror and the sample are combined to obtain an interference signal. When the system under investigation is a multiple-scattering medium, by tuning the optical length of the reference arm, the optical path-length probability density of light backscattered from the sample is obtained. This distribution carries information about the structural details of the medium. In the present paper, we apply the technique of optical path-length spectroscopy to investigate inhomogeneous distributions of particulate dielectrics such as ceramics and powders. The experiments are performed on suspensions of systems with different solid loads, as well as on powders and suspensions of particles with different sizes. We show that the methodology is highly sensitive to changes in volume concentration and particle size and, therefore, it can be successfully used for real-time monitoring. In addition, the technique is fiber optic-based and has all the advantages associated with the inherent versatility.
