An improved constructed wetland (CW) with the addition ofTubifex tubifexin winter was studied in laboratory batch systems. The outcomes of this study indicate that the potential use ofTubifex tubifexcould improve the ecosystem and water purification by CWs in winter.

Within WLCG, the DESY site in Hamburg is one of the largest Tier-2 sites with about 18500 CPU cores for Grid workloads. Additionally, about 8000 CPU cores are available for interactive user analyses in the National Analysis Factory [NAF]. After migrating these two batch systems onto a common HTCondor based set-up during the previous four years, we recapitulate the lessons learned during the transition especially since both use cases differ in their workloads. For Grid jobs start-up latencies are negligible and the primary focus is on an optimal utilization of the resources. Complementary, users of the NAF expect a high responsiveness of the batch system as well as the storage for interactive analyses. In this document, we will also give an outlook to future developments and concepts for the DESY high-throughput computing. In the ongoing evolution of the HTC batch system, we are exploring how to integrate anonymous jobs with the batch system as back-end for Function-as-a-Service workflows as well as an option for dynamic expansions to remote computing resources.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a very promising component for bio-based plastics. Efficient synthesis of HMF from biomass is still challenging because of fast degradation of HMF to by-products under formation conditions. Therefore, different studies, conducted mainly in monophasic and biphasic batch systems with and without water addition have been published and are still under investigation. However, to produce HMF at a large scale, a continuous process is preferable. Until now, only a few studies have been published in this context. In this work, it is shown that fluorous alcohol hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) can act as superior reaction solvent for HMF synthesis from fructose in a fixed bed reactor. Very high yields of 76% HMF can be achieved in this system under optimized conditions, whilst the catalyst is very stable over several days. Such high yields are only described elsewhere with high boiling reaction solvents like dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), whereas HFIP with a boiling point of 58 °C is very easy to separate from HMF.

This article describes a new framework, called SIMPLE, for settingup and maintaining classic WLCG sites with minimal operational efforts and insights needed into the WLCG middleware. The framework provides a single common interface to install and configure any of its supported grid services, such as Compute Elements, Batch Systems, Worker Nodes and miscellaneous middleware packages. It leverages modern container orchestration tools like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, and confiuration management tools like Puppet, Ansible, to automate deployment of the WLCG services on behalf of a site admin. The framework is modular and extensible by design. Therefore, it is easy to add support for more grid services as well as infrastructure automation tools to accommodate diverse scenarios at different sites. We provide insight into the design of the framework and our efforts towards development, release and deployment of its first implementation featuring CREAM E, TORQUE Batch System and TORQUE based Worker Nodes.
