Low temperature degradation free Zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) has been developed. It is reported that ZTA has higher mechanical strength compared to alumina due to the stress induced transformation and spontaneously transformation of zirconia phase on some ZTA have been occurred. For achieving the higher reliability of artificial joint prosthesis alternative to alumina and other ceramic materials, it is necessary to improve and validate the both mechanical characteristics and phase stability at the same time. We evaluated that microstructure, mechanical characteristics and phase stability of newly developed ZTA (BIOCERAM®AZUL). It was confirmed that four-point bending strength and weibull modulus were extreamly high, and ZTA has higher reliability. There were no significant changes and deterioration in four-point bending strength, crystal structure and wear property with and without accelerated aging test. Newly developed ZTA not only with high mechanical characteristics but also with phase stability could be quite useful as bearing materials in artificial joints for longer clinical use.

The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of the small magnetorheological fluid gap on the braking performance of the magnetorheological brake. In this article, theoretical analyses of the output torque are given first, and then the operating principle and design details of the magnetorheological brake whose magnetorheological fluid gap can be altered are presented and discussed. Next, the magnetic circuit of the proposed magnetorheological brake is conducted and further followed by a magnetostatic simulation of the magnetorheological brakes with different sizes of fluid gap. A prototype of the magnetorheological brake is fabricated and a series of tests are carried out to evaluate the braking performance and torque stability, as well as the verification of the simulation results. Experimental results show that the braking torque increases with the increase in the current, and the difference for the impact of the fluid gap on braking performance is huge under different currents. The rules, which the experimental results show, have an important significance on both the improvement of structure design for magnetorheological brake and the investigation of the wear property under different fluid gaps.

A Ni–Fe–B–Si–Nb amorphous alloy was deposited on a steel substrate surface via a laser cladding process, and a laser cladding plus laser remelting process. The wear behavior of the laser processed samples and the bulk metallic glass (BMG) sample with the same nominal composition were tested using a pin-on-disc type testing machine. The nano-mechanical properties of the samples were measured with a nano-characterization system. The friction wear tests showed that deep grooves and wear debris were formed on the worn surface of the laser cladded coating, while only shallow grooves for the laser remelted coatings. The friction coefficients of laser remelted coatings and BMG were lower than the laser cladded coating. The wear mass losses of the laser remelted coating were less than the BMG when the laser remelting scanning speed was higher than 6 mm/min. The nano-hardness and elastic modulus of the remelted coating is higher than that of the laser cladded coating. Also, they increase with the increasing laser scanning speed with 1227.9 HV and 277.4 GPa when the remelting scanning speed is 8 m/min. Based on the nano-indentation and friction wear tests results, it was found that the friction wear properties of the laser cladded coating, laser remelted coatings and BMG related well to the ratio of H3/E2. A higher value of H3/E2 can lead to a better wear resistance property.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the fretting wear property of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based composites reinforced by different content of attapulgite. Design/methodology/approach A series of composites were prepared by a hot-pressing method. Fretting tests were carried out using an SRV-IV oscillating reciprocating friction wear tester with a load of 10 N and a frequency of 100 Hz. The morphology of the fracture structure and the worn surface was observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and a non-contact three dimensional surface profiler. Findings With the addition of attapulgite, the microstructure of the composites become more regular, and their heat resistance improved. Furthermore, the friction coefficient and the specific wear rate of the composites with lower filler content reduced compared with that of neat UHMWPE, and the optimum filler content is 1 per cent. Originality/value The study investigated the fretting resistance mechanism of the attapulgite in the UHMWPE matrix. The results could help to provide some experimental evidence for the broader application of silicates on the fretting wear resistance of polymers. By contrast with the traditional method of adding hard particles into micro arc oxidation (MAO) coating to improve its wear performance, this study introduced copper into the MAO coating on TC4 alloy by adding copper pyrophosphate to enhance the wear property in a marine environment and the antibacterial property. The results demonstrated that the MAO coating with copper pyrophosphate addition showed a porous structure, and Cu was mainly concentrated around micropores. CuO and Cu2O were formed in this MAO coating. This MAO coating with Cu had a high bonding strength to the substrate. Although the hardness of the coating with Cu had been reduced, it could reduce the friction coefficient and enhance the wear property in simulated seawater due to the lubrication of Cu. Furthermore, this MAO coating with Cu addition had obvious antibacterial and bactericidal effects due to the antibacterial effect of Cu.
