AbstractThis paper aims to improve users’ experience in affective interactive installations through the diversification of interfaces. With logically organized hierarchical experience, diverse interfaces with emotion data as inputs enhance users’ emotional interaction to be more natural and immersive. By using facial affect detection technology, an installation with diverse input interfaces was tested with an organic formal setting. Mechanical flowers and support structure based on the organic form were deployed as its physical output for a multitude of sensorial dimensions. With actions of the mechanical flowers, such as blooming, closing, rotating, glowing and blinking, a layered experiential sequence was created and the atmosphere of the installation was evaluated to be more engaging. In this way, the layered complexity of information was transferred to users’ immersive emotional experience. We believe that the practices in this work can contribute to deeper emotional engagement with users and add new layers of emotional interactivity.

AbstractThis essay reconsiders Charles Ryder’s religious conversion in Brideshead Revisited in terms of a primarily emotional conversion. When reading the novel as a pilgrimage to passion, readers can see in Charles a legitimate, convincing emotional conversion, which should—when emphasizing traditional Catholic ideals—ultimately also be understood as a religious conversion. Charles’s emotional interaction with Catholicism includes his intimate, formative relationship with the Catholic Flyte family, especially Sebastian, and aspects of his career as a Baroque artist, as Baroque art is often identified with Catholicism. It also includes Charles’s disenchantment with both the soullessness of war, which drains its participants of any emotional experience, and the modern world, which lacks connection to depth and tradition. Finally, the emotive power of his inadvertent pilgrimage to Brideshead also connects Charles to Catholicism as the house facilitates Charles’s memories of his religious experience at Lord Marchmain’s deathbed, his artistic conversion to Baroque art, and his passionate friendship with Sebastian. Such a broad definition of Catholicism calls for an expansive understanding of religion, but it is this kind of a religious understanding that Brideshead Revisited recommends.

Soviet cinema’s ‘affective turn’ in the 1930s took shape in the context of far-ranging scientific debates about emotion and perceptual management. The Soviet film industry’s attention to emotional appeal and push to develop its genre repertoire at the end of the 1920s were closely linked, this chapter shows, to a broader re-evaluation of emotional life in Soviet psychology, as well as to a new scientific interest in the effects of cultural production on audiences. At the end of the 1920s, psychologists including Lev Vygotsky and Aleksandr Luria began to discredit the physiological reading of emotion that had held sway over the human sciences. Alongside its integration into the processes of the mind by the 1930s, emotion was rendered inextricable from the social environment and thereby amenable to cultivation and direction. The setting forth of ‘emotional education’ as a crucial cultural agenda spurred a wave of enquiries into the emotional impact of Soviet cinema. I explore how these sociological and psycho-physiological investigations not only re-conceptualized film viewing as predominantly an emotional experience, but established a correlation between the spectator’s emotional engagement and a film’s use of familiar narrative structures and clear genre markers. The chapter concludes by discussing Stalinist cinema’s commitment to increasing genre variety as both the corollary of an increased audience mindedness, and a symptom of its desire to better manage and guide audience response.

Instead, the critical elements that will deliver the understanding of self and other as persons with intentionality are shared object-centered interactions that include not only emotional engagement, but also joint attention and joint goal-directed action.

Facial affect analysis is perceived as one of themost complex and challenging areas for humanisation ofrobots. Several Facial Expression Recognition (FER)systems apply generic machine learning algorithms toextract facial features. This results in an erroneous classification of previously unseen data. This paper improviseson previous research done on emotion detection and im-plements techniques to leverage the potential of Convolu-tional Neural Networks (CNNs) effectively to classify aset of grayscale images of human faces into seven distinctemotion categories. We experiment with some populartransfer learning models to achieve a maximum accuracyof 98% for the seven-class classification task. To eke outfurther precision and reduce the value loss, we incorpo-rate the Squeeze and Excitation Network to theResNet-50 model, which resulted in a validation accuracyof 99.36%.

Transportation Theory: Narrative transportation theory focuses on the causes and consequences of an individual being immersed in a story, or transported into a narrative world. Transportation refers to the feeling of being so absorbed in a story that connection to the real world is lost for some time; it includes cognitive engagement, emotional experience, and the presence of mental imagery. This experience is a key mechanism underlying narrative influence on recipients’ attitudes and beliefs, particularly in combination with enjoyment and character identification. Narrative persuasion through transportation has been demonstrated with a wide variety of topics, including health, social issues, and consumer products. Transportation can occur across media (through written, audio, or video narratives) and for both factual and fictional stories. It is typically measured with a self-report scale, which has been well-validated (Green & Brock, 2000). Transportation is conceptually similar to flow (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) and presence (Klimmt & Vorderer, 2003), although both flow and presence pertain more to being immersed in an experience, rather than specifically in a narrative. While individuals are transported, their mental systems and capacities become concentrated on events occurring in the story, causing them to lose track of time, lack awareness of the surrounding environment, and experience powerful emotions as a result of their immersion in the narrative. Transported recipients may also lose some access to real-world knowledge, making them more likely to adapt their real-world beliefs and behaviors to be more consistent with the story to which they are exposed. Transportation theory suggests several mechanisms to explain this phenomenon, including reduced counterarguing, connections with characters, heightened perceptions of realism, the formation of vivid mental imagery, and emotional engagement. Personality factors can also affect the extent of transportation: narrative recipients vary in transportability, or their dispositional tendency to become transported; and they may be influenced differently by narratives due to a difference in their need for affect (individuals high in need for affect are more likely to be transported into narratives). Additional factors such as story quality and points of similarity between the reader and the story can also influence transportation.

SummaryHealing through emotional arousal is an ancient idea. Abreaction may yield lasting, brief, or no improvement, or alternatively sensitization. The predictors of outcome are unclear. The emotional experience of relevant exposure therapy yields more reliable improvement; forgotten traumas may surface, which ease as exposure proceeds. High arousal does not enhance the gains, but emotional engagement in exposure seems crucial for habituation to occur. Habituation is specific to the fear cues presented, marked generalization being unusual. Emotional experience irrelevant to a phobia can also improve the phobia, but the duration of such relief is unclear and different mechanisms may be involved. Fear-reduction is unreliable with non-exposure methods. Though counterproductive during exposure, dissociation and denial may have some uses. Optimal gains may come from being able to modulate activation or suppression to suit particular circumstances.

Quantitative recording of electron patterns and their rapid conversion into digital information is an outstanding goal which the photoplate fails to solve satisfactorily. For a long time, LLL-TV cameras have been used for EM adjustment but due to their inferior pixel number they were never a real alternative to the photoplate. This situation has changed with the availability of scientific grade slow-scan charged coupled devices (CCD) with pixel numbers exceeding 106, photometric accuracy and, by Peltier cooling, both excellent storage and noise figures previously inaccessible in image detection technology. Again the electron image is converted into a photon image fed to the CCD by some light optical transfer link. Subsequently, some technical solutions are discussed using the detection quantum efficiency (DQE), resolution, pixel number and exposure range as figures of merit.A key quantity is the number of electron-hole pairs released in the CCD sensor by a single primary electron (PE) which can be estimated from the energy deposit ΔE in the scintillator,

Abstract. Intraindividual variability, along with the more frequently studied between-person variability, has been argued to be one of the basic building blocks of emotional experience. The aim of the current study is to examine whether intraindividual variability in affect predicts tiredness in daily life. Intraindividual variability in affect was studied with the experience sampling method in a group of 110 participants (aged between 19 and 84 years) during 14 consecutive days on seven randomly determined occasions per day. The results suggest that affect variability is a stable construct over time and situations. Our findings also demonstrate that intraindividual variability in affect has a unique role in predicting increased levels of tiredness at the momentary level as well at the level of individuals.
