The measurements were made in Feb. 1982 with the Parkes 64 m telescope using a corrugated waveguide horn with total half-power beam width of 15′, the first sidelobes being 19 dB down, resulting in an aperture efficiency ηA=0.53±0.007, a main beam efficiency of ηmb=0.80±0.005 and a ratio of source flux to antenna temperature of Γ=0.62±0.1 K/Jy (Murray, priv. comm.). A cooled two channel FET frontend used in the frequency switching mode with Δν = 2 MHz resulted in a system noise temperature at zenith of Tsyst = 40 K for one channel and Tsyst = 50 K for the other. Each frontend channel received a single polarization mode, and this radiation was then further analysed in a 2 × 512 channel autocorrelation spectrometer set at a channel separation of 3.906 KHz corresponding to a velocity resolution of V = 0.824 km s−1. Hanning smoothed this resulted in a σT = 0.05 K for the average of both polarization.

This paper presents an analysis of the relativistic self-focusing of a rippled Gaussian laser beam in a plasma. Considering the nonlinearity as arising owing to relativistic variation of mass, and following the WKB and paraxial-ray approximations, the phenomenon of self-focusing of rippled laser beams is studied for arbitrary magnitude of nonlinearity. Pandey et al. [Phys. Fluids82, 1221 (1990)] have shown that a small ripple on the axis of the main beam grows very rapidly with distance of propagation as compared with the self-focusing of the main beam. Based on this analogy, we have analysed relativistic self-focusing of rippled beams in plasmas. The relativistic intensities with saturation effects of nonlinearity allow the nonlinear refractive index in the paraxial regime to have a slower radial dependence, and thus the ripple extracts relatively less energy from its neighbourhood.

The nonlinear basic theory and nonlinear influence factor of cable-stayed bridge has been introduced. Quantitative analysis to the sag effect, beam-column effect and large deformation effect has been done based on a cable-stayed bridge. Analysis show that the sag effect, beam-column effect and large deformation effect of cable force is not obvious, but the sag effect should not been ignored in the calculation of the main beam.

Abstract. Precise knowledge of the angle between the meteor vector velocity and the radar beam axis is one of the largest source of errors in the Arecibo Observatory (AO) micrometeor observations. In this paper we study ~250 high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) meteor head-echoes obtained using the dual-beam 430 MHz AO Radar in Puerto Rico, in order to reveal the distribution of this angle. All of these meteors have been detected first by the radar first side lobe, then by the main beam and finally seen in the side lobe again. Using geometrical arguments to calculate the meteor velocity in the plane perpendicular to the beam axis, we find that most of the meteors are travelling within ~15° with respect to the beam axis, in excellent agreement with previous estimates. These results suggest that meteoroids entering the atmosphere at greater angles may deposit their meteoric material at higher altitudes explaining at some level the missing mass inconsistency raised by the comparisson of meteor fluxes derived from satellite and traditional meteor radar observations. They also may be the source of the observed high altitude ions and metalic layers observed by radars and lidars respectively.

In this study, a dual-beam piezoelectric energy harvester is proposed. This harvester consists of a main beam and an auxiliary beam with a pair of magnets attached to couple their motions. The potential energy of the system is modeled to understand the influence of the potential wells on the dynamics of the harvester. It is noted that the alignment of the magnets significantly influences the potential wells. A theoretical model of the harvester is developed based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Frequency sweeps are conducted experimentally and numerically to study the dynamics of the harvester. It is shown that the dual-beam harvester can exhibit hardening effect with different configurations of magnet alignments in frequency sweeps. The performance of the harvester can be improved with proper placement of the magnets.

Abstract. Image processing of X-ray-computed polychromatic cone-beam micro-tomography (μXCT) data of geological samples mainly involves artefact reduction and phase segmentation. For the former, the main beam-hardening (BH) artefact is removed by applying a best-fit quadratic surface algorithm to a given image data set (reconstructed slice), which minimizes the BH offsets of the attenuation data points from that surface. A Matlab code for this approach is provided in the Appendix. The final BH-corrected image is extracted from the residual data or from the difference between the surface elevation values and the original grey-scale values. For the segmentation, we propose a novel least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM, an algorithm for pixel-based multi-phase classification) approach. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed on BH-corrected and uncorrected samples to show that BH correction is in fact an important prerequisite for accurate multi-phase classification. The combination of the two approaches was thus used to classify successfully three different more or less complex multi-phase rock core samples.
