In the static analysis of beam-column systems using matrix methods, polynomials are using as the shape functions. The transverse deflections along the beam axis, including the axial- flexural effects in the beam-column element, are not adequately described by polynomials. As an alternative method, the element stiffness matrix is modeling using stability parameters. The shape functions which are obtaining using the stability parameters are more compatible with the system’s behavior. A mass matrix used in the dynamic analysis is evaluated using the same shape functions as those used for derivations of the stiffness coefficients and is called a consistent mass matrix. In this study, the stiffness and consistent mass matrices for prismatic three-dimensional Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beam-columns are proposed with consideration for the axial-flexural interactions and shear deformations associated with transverse deflections along the beam axis. The second-order effects, critical buckling loads, and eigenvalues are determined. According to the author’s knowledge, this study is the first report of the derivations of consistent mass matrices of Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beam-columns under the effect of axially compressive or tensile force.

Postfilamentation channel resulting from filamentation of freely propagating 744-nm, 5-mJ, 110-fs pulse in the corridor air is examined experimentally and in simulations. The longitudinal extension of postfilament was determined to be 55–95 m from the compressor output. Using single-shot angle-wavelength spectra measurements, we observed a series of red-shifted maxima in the spectrum, localized on the beam axis with the divergence below 0.5 mrad. In the range 55–70 m, the number of maxima and their red-shift increase with the distance reaching 1 μm, while the pulse duration measured by the autocorrelation technique is approximately constant. Further on, for distances larger than 70 m and up to 95 m, the propagation is characterized by the suppressed beam divergence and unchanged pulse spectrum. The pulse duration increases due to the normal air dispersion.

The passage of 10 keV electron beam through a bundle of a hollow polysulfone fiber with an inner channel diameter of 160 ± 60 μm was studied. Dependence of a fraction of the electron beam transmitted through the channels on the tilt angle of the channels relative to the incident beam axis is measured. The fraction of electrons that experienced energy losses of less than 10% after passing through the channels was estimated.

In this paper, we present two options of the toroid magnetic spectrometer dedicated to measure the energy and the polar and the azimuthal angles of the scattered from the ion’s nuclear electrons in the future electron-ion collider DERICA at JINR. These options differ by the opposite sign of the magnetic field. In one of the options, the toroid magnetic field bends electrons towards the collision line, while in the option with the inverted field a bent is done outwards from the beam axis. We show that the last case provides much larger useful fraction of a solid angle for detection of the scattered electrons. The momentum resolution of such a spectrometer is estimated.

We present studies of proton fluxes in the T10 beamline at CERN. A prototype high pressure gas time projection chamber (TPC) was exposed to the beam of protons and other particles, using the 0.8 GeV/c momentum setting in T10, in order to make cross section measurements of low energy protons in argon. To explore the energy region comparable to hadrons produced by GeV-scale neutrino interactions at oscillation experiments, i.e., near 0.1 GeV of kinetic energy, methods of moderating the T10 beam were employed: the dual technique of moderating the beam with acrylic blocks and measuring scattered protons off the beam axis was used to decrease the kinetic energy of incident protons, as well as change the proton/minimum ionising particle (MIP) composition of the incident flux. Measurements of the beam properties were made using time of flight systems upstream and downstream of the TPC. The kinetic energy of protons reaching the TPC was successfully changed from ∼0.3 GeV without moderator blocks to less than 0.1 GeV with four moderator blocks (40 cm path length). The flux of both protons and MIPs off the beam axis was increased. The ratio of protons to MIPs vary as a function of the off-axis angle allowing for possible optimisation of the detector to select the type of required particles. Simulation informed by the time of flight measurements show that with four moderator blocks placed in the beamline, (5.6 ± 0.1) protons with energies below 0.1 GeV per spill traversed the active TPC region. Measurements of the beam composition and energy are presented.
