The demand of fish meal as a protein source of feed increases with the increasing of fish culture activities, so this activities needed alternative protein sources to reduce the use of fish meal. The feed ingredient can be used as an alternative protein source is chicken intestine silage meal. The purpose of this research were to determine the percentage of chicken intestine silage meal to substitute fish meal in feed formulation of catfish fry based on the growth and feed efficiency. This research was conducted in June-July 2014 in the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Aquaculture Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Research methods using Completely Randomized Design with six treatments and three replications (A : commercial feed, B: 0% chicken intestine silage meal and 100% fish meal, C: 25% chicken intestine silage meal and 75% fish meal, D: 50% chicken intestine silage meal and 50% fish meal, E: 75% chicken intestine silage meal and 25% fish meal, F: 100% chicken intestine silage meal and 0% fish meal). Results showed the utilization of chicken intestine silage meal significant effect on growth and feed efficiency, but not significant on survival catfish fry. Utilization of chicken intestine silae meal could substitute 100% fish meal in feed formulation of catfish fry. During the study the water quality is still at normal level for the maintenance of catfish fry.

The perception of key players in the fish farming sector towards the use of insects is important for their acceptance to adopt insects as an alternative protein source to the expensive fish meal. Perception was established through a cross-sectional study of 208 fish farmers and 71 fish feed traders and/or processors conducted in Gulu, Tororo and Masaka districts in Uganda, using descriptive, Chi-square, correlation and factor statistical analysis of the data collected. Males dominated the fish farming and fish feed trading and/or processing enterprises. Youths were involved to almost the same extent as adults. Fish farmers majorly practiced pond fish farming, mainly using vegetable and grain based feeds. Most fish farmers (94.9%) and feed traders or processors (91.5%) were willing to use insects for feed but only 44.8% of fish farmers and 8.6% of feed traders and processors had ever used insects. All insects ever used by the respondents for feeding fish, including white ants, grasshoppers, termites and cockroaches were not reared but harvested from the environment. Willingness to use (rear/buy/sell) insects as fish feed was significantly and positively correlated with farmers’ and fish feed traders’ and/or processors’ perception that insects were good sources of nourishment for fish. Familiarity with use of insects and knowledge/awareness of their use significantly contributed to respondents’ positive perception. The apparent willingness to use insects for feeding fish should be promoted by encouraging mass insect production. Assessment of the consumer’s acceptability of fish reared on insects is necessary to ensure market for insect-fed fish.

<p>Insect meal is an unconventional feedstuff and is expected to be an alternative protein source in broiler diet in the future, as an impact of high price and a limited supply of a fish meal. The objective of this paper is to describe the potency of insects as a feedstuff in broiler diet. Some types of insects, i.e., bees, flies, crickets, grasshoppers, termites, ants, and cockroaches have the potential to be a feedstuff protein source. Several studies reported that insect has high protein content (10.3-76.2%). The use of insects as feedstuffs in broiler diet is constrained by several limiting factors, i.e. the presence of chitin, high crude fat content, and the presence of contaminants. Processing insects before being used as feedstuffs is necessary. Separation of chitin and crude fat content are highly recommended before using insect as protein source feedstuff in broiler diet. The use of insects in a broiler diet ranges from 4 to 29.65% depending on the type of insect, life phase of insect and the type of processing. Research and development to increase insect utilization in broiler diet are still needed.</p>

<p class="awabstrak2">Increasing demand of protein source for animal feed, particularly fish meal and soybean meal has led to a problem in the future. It is a need to look for an alternative protein source, in order to meet amino acid requirements maintaining livestock production level. Insects possesing high quality, efficient dan rich protein content at all life stages such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF, <em>Hermetia illucens</em>) could be used as one of the alternatives. The flies grow and reproduce easily, have high feed efficiency and can be reared on bio-waste streams. These are neither pests nor vectors of diseases. Insect meal generally possesses levels of chemical contaminants which are below recommended maximum concentrations. The larvae have antibacterial (<em>Escherichia coli</em> O15:H7, <em>Salmonella enterica</em> serovar <em>Enteritidis</em>) and antiviral (enterovirus and adenovirus ) properties. Larvae of BSF could be scaled up easily and possess 40-50% protein content, including some essential amino acids that can be used to replace both fish meal and soybean meal in feed.</p>

Fish farming including freshwater crayfish still has a dependency on the availability of fish meal as the main source of protein in feed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate alternative protein sources including poultry by-products, feather meal, lupine flour, soybean meal and meat, and bone meal for smooth marron (Cherax cainii) freshwater crayfish feed. A total of 150 juvenile marrons (9.09 ± 0.21 g) were kept for 90 days and distributed into 15 rearing tanks consisting of five treatments with three replications. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the increase in biomass, survival rate, moulting rate (weight), feed efficiency ratio, and feed digestibility (P> 0.05). However, marron juvenile fed with a protein source of poultry by-products meal had the highest specific growth rate (0.31 ± 0.05 g / day). In addition, marron fed with fish meal protein resulted a significant increase in carapace length (P <0.05). Based on the digestibility test, it was found that the digestibility level of the feed ranged from 76.39 ± 0.01 - 79.11 ± 0.01% and replacement of fish meal had no significant effect on dry matter digestibility (P> 0.05). Overall, the results of this study indicate that the general growth performance of marron is not affected by the replacement of fish meal in the feed. Alternative protein materials can be used as a protein source to replace fish meal in marron feed so that the use of fish meal can be reduced.
