Mitomycin C (MMC) is one of the most effective chemotherapeutic drugs. However, the dose of MMC is greatly limited by its toxicity in normal tissues. Recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), an erythropoietic hormone, has also been shown to exert tissue protective effects. The purpose of this study was to explore the protective effect of rhEPO against MMC-induced heart, liver, and renal dysfunction. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into six groups (with six animals each), namely control, rhEPO alone group, MMC alone group, and rhEPO + MMC group (pre-, co-, and posttreatment conditions). The results showed that MMC induced a marked cardiac, renal, and liver failure characterized by a significant decrease in body weight, organs weight, and organs ratio and a significant increase in creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyl transferase, and conjugated and total bilirubin levels in serum. Histological examination showed that MMC caused liver alterations. rhEPO treatment restored body weight, organs weight, and organs ratio as well as serum biochemical parameters and histological damage caused by MMC exposure.

Honey is consumed as food and also used in the treatments of ailment. However, honey of various types exhibit varying properties. Their therapeutic effects are determined by whether the honey is multifloral or monofloral, and also on the variety of nectars the honey is derived from. Manuka and Tualang types of honey were observed to possess anti-ulcer effects. However, no such report is available for University of Ilorin honey. This study therefore aimed to determine the gastroprotective effects of University of Ilorin honey in Wistar rats using two laboratory models for inducing ulcer (HCl/Ethanol and Indomethacin). Twenty rats each were assigned to four groups for each model of ulcer. The rats were treated for 12 days with the administration of distilled water (control), cimetidine (100 mg/kg b.w.) and University of Ilorin honey (250 mg/kg b.w. in one group and 1000 mg/kg b.w in another group). The rats were fasted for 24 hours after the last treatment. Then, the ulcerogens were given orally. After four hours, the rats were sacrificed, gastric juice was collected and the stomachs were examined for ulceration. The results revealed that pre-treatment with University of Ilorin honey reduced gastric index from 6.80±0.20 (1000 mg/kg b.w. to 2.40±0.24 (control) P<0.05 and 7.20±0.37 (1000 mg/kg b.w.) to 3.20±0.37 (control) P<0.05 in HCl/Ethanol and indomethacin induced ulcer models respectively. There was no significant difference in ulcer index between the cimetidine administered rats and the honey administered group (1000 mg/kg bw.), but the honey group (250 mg/kg bw.) was less effective than the cimetidine group in the models used. Also, there were no changes in gastric acidity in all the groups compared with the control group. In conclusion, the results showed that University of Ilorin honey has protective effect on the gastrointestinal tract which is not due to alteration of gastric acidity.

Abstracts Background Chemotherapy is associated with male infertility. Cisplatin (CP), an antineoplastic agent has been successfully used for the treatment of diverse kinds of malignancies, however, the use of this effective agent could induce oxidative stress injury, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and testicular damage. Combined CP chemotherapy with plant extracts can diminish the toxicity and enhance the antitumor efficacy of the drug. The objective of the study was to determine the protective effect Lophira lanceolata leaf extract (LLLE) on CP-induced toxicity on male reproductive organs. Methods The study was carried out with 30 (n = 30) male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). The rats were randomly assigned into 6 groups of 5 rats each. Rats in group 1 (Control) were administered distilled water per os. Rats in group 2 were administered 5 mg/kg of CP intraperitoneally (i.p). Rats in groups 3 and 4 were administered per os LLLE at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight and rats in groups 5 and 6 were administered 5 mg/kg body weight of CP + LLLE at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight respectively. Results The results showed a significant decrease in the sperm parameters in the group treated with CP alone when compared with the control and there in the sperm parameters in the groups administered CP + LLLE. The body and organ weights of the rats were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the CP treated group relative to the control. However, there was an increase in the weight of the organs in the LLLE pretreated groups. The photomicrographs showed degenerative changes in the testicular tissues of the rats administered CP alone whereas the group pretreated with the LLLE showed amelioration induced by the CP. Our study revealed that CP treatment has deleterious effects on sperm parameters and testicular tissues and the accessory sex organs (Epididymis, prostate, seminal vesicles) of the rats. Oral administration of LLLE at 200 and 400 mg/kg bodyweight for 26 days conferred protective effects against testicular damage induced by CP. Conclusion This study revealed that pretreatment with LLLE protected against CP-induced testicular toxicity.

Over the years, research works on the different liver enzymes has proven to be very helpful to man. This study evaluates the protective effects of turmeric on the liver enzymes of metronidazole-treated adult male wistar rats. With previous researches, metronidazole has been found to exert some negative effects on some organs of the body like the testis, kidney etc but the turmeric on its own part, has been found to have no side effects with a host of beneficial functions such as its anti-oxidant and antimicrobial effect amongst a host of other functions. In this study, twenty wistar rats with weight range of between 165-180g were assigned into four groups A, B, C and D of 5 each. The experimental groups A, B and C were orally administered 200mg of metronidazole, 400mg of metronidazole and 400mg of metronidazole as well as 400mg of turmeric respectively for duration of twenty-eight days while the group D served as control and were orally administered water and feed only. Twenty four hours after the last administration, the animals were anaesthetized under chloroform inhalation and dissected for organ collection. Blood for serum preparation was collected into sterile plain tubes and stored in the refrigerator for analysis. Serum samples from the bloods were analyzed for liver enzymes activities using randox kit method. The study revealed that turmeric helped reduced the effects of metronidazole on the serum activities of ALT, AST and ALP on the liver. This present study suggests that metronidazole could have negative effects on the liver and so advises that turmeric be added when on metronidazole administration.

Opuntia ficus indica(family Cactaceae) is used in the treatment of a variety of conditions including metal-induced toxicity. The study reports the protective effects ofOpuntia ficus indica(CCE) against lithium carbonate-induced toxicity in rats. Nephrocardiotoxicity was induced in male Wistar rats by single dose of lithium carbonate (25 mg/kg b.w twice daily for 30 days). Aqueous extract ofOpuntia ficus indicawas administered at the dose of 100 mg/kg of b.w by gavage for 60 days. Obtained results revealed that administration of lithium carbonate caused a significant increase in serum creatinine, uric acid, and urea levels. Additionally, a significant decrease in the level of renal and cardiac SOD, CAT, and GPx activities was associated with a significant increase of MDA levels in lithium carbonate group more than those of the control. However, the treatment of experimental rats with CCE prevented these alterations and maintained the antioxidant status. The histopathological observations supported the biochemical evidences of nephrocardioprotection. CCE supplementation could protect against lithium carbonate-induced renal and cardiac injuries in rats, plausibly by the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes and inhibition of MDA to confer the protective effect.
