Abstract Objective The aim of this work is to define competencies and entrustable professional activities (EPAs) to be imparted within the framework of surgical neuro-oncological residency and fellowship training as well as the education of medical students. Improved and specific training in surgical neuro-oncology promotes neuro-oncological expertise, quality of surgical neuro-oncological treatment and may also contribute to further development of neuro-oncological techniques and treatment protocols. Specific curricula for a surgical neuro-oncologic education have not yet been established. Methods We used a consensus-building approach to propose skills, competencies and EPAs to be imparted within the framework of surgical neuro-oncological training. We developed competencies and EPAs suitable for training in surgical neuro-oncology. Result In total, 70 competencies and 8 EPAs for training in surgical neuro-oncology were proposed. EPAs were defined for the management of the deteriorating patient, the management of patients with the diagnosis of a brain tumour, tumour-based resections, function-based surgical resections of brain tumours, the postoperative management of patients, the collaboration as a member of an interdisciplinary and/or -professional team and finally for the care of palliative and dying patients and their families. Conclusions and Relevance The present work should subsequently initiate a discussion about the proposed competencies and EPAs and, together with the following discussion, contribute to the creation of new training concepts in surgical neuro-oncology.

28 Background: The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has recommended integration of palliative care into oncology practice at the time of diagnosis of advanced cancer. The attitudes, knowledge, and skills of Hematology/Oncology fellows in palliative medicine to implement this recommendation have not been assessed. Methods: In 2013 we surveyed current US Hematology/Oncology fellows to assess their attitudes and the quality of teaching in palliative care received during fellowship and their perceived preparedness to care for patients at End of Life (EOL). Trainees at all US programs were surveyed via Research Electronic Data Capture. The survey was IRB approved, anonymous and voluntary. Results: 176 surveys were collected. Statistical analysis was performed with t-test for numeric and Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables. 98% of respondents felt that providing care for dying patients was important. 99% indicated that physicians have a responsibility to help patients at EOL. Fellows felt their overall training in fellowship was superior to their quality of training (p<0.0001) or teaching (p <0.0001) on EOL. Pearson correlation showed that those with training in palliative care felt more prepared caring for patients at EOL (p <0.0001). Fellows who had training in palliative care during fellowship (45.4% of those surveyed) felt they had better teaching on managing a patient at EOL than those who did not (p<0.0001). There was no statistical significance noted with self-identified roles of spirituality or religion in attitudes, knowledge, or skills. 64% reported having conducted over ten family meetings regarding EOL. Only 18.9% were supervised (p<0.0001) and only 13.1% were given feedback more than ten times (p<0.0001). 89.7% of fellows surveyed stated they have disagreed with treatment without palliative care on at least one occasion. 40% of respondents did not know how to respond to a request to stop chemotherapy. Conclusions: Hematology/Oncology fellows believe that EOL care is important. Education about EOL is not at the same level of their overall fellowship training despite the recognition of the benefit of palliative care in Oncology. Educational initiatives need to be introduced to improve training on EOL care.

Introduction. Patients with head and neck cancer suffer from various impairments due to the primary illness, as well as secondary consequences of the oncological treatment. This systematic review describes the effects of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy on the functions of the upper aerodigestive tract in patients with head and neck cancer.Methods. A systematic literature search was performed by two independent reviewers using the electronic databases PubMed and Embase. All dates up to May 2016 were included.Results. Of the 947 abstracts, sixty articles met the inclusion criteria and described one or more aspects of the sequelae of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Forty studies described swallowing-related problems, 24 described voice-related problems, seven described trismus, and 25 studies described general quality of life. Only 14 articles reported that speech pathologists conducted the interventions, of which only six articles described in detail what the interventions involved.Conclusion. In general, voice quality improved following intervention, whereas quality of life, dysphagia, and oral intake deteriorated during and after treatment. However, as a consequence of the diversity in treatment protocols and patient characteristics, the conclusions of most studies cannot be easily generalised. Further research on the effects of oncological interventions on the upper aerodigestive tract is needed.

Research on instructional quality has been of great interest for several decades, leading to an immense and diverse body of literature. However, due to different definitions and operationalisations, the picture of what characteristics are important for instructional quality is not entirely clear. Therefore, in this paper, a scoping review was performed to provide an overview of existing evidence of both generic and subject-didactic characteristics with regard to student performance. More precisely, this paper aims to (a) identify both generic and subject-didactic characteristics affecting student performance in mathematics in secondary school, (b) cluster these characteristics into categories to show areas for quality teaching, and (c) analyse and assess the effects of these characteristics on student performance to rate the scientific evidence in the context of the articles considered. The results reveal that teaching characteristics, and not just the instruments for recording the quality of teaching as described in previous research, can be placed on a continuum ranging from generic to subject-didactic. Moreover, on account of the inconsistent definition of subject-didactic characteristics, the category of ‘subject-didactic specifics’ needs further development to establish it as a separate category in empirical research. Finally, this study represents a further step toward understanding the effects of teaching characteristics on student performance by providing an overview of teaching characteristics and their effects and evidence.

Background: Acharacteristic feature of cancer is, among other things, that even after successful oncological treatment, the patient cannot close this chapter of life and the experience of being acancer patient. In oncology there is no unambiguous definition of apatient as ahealthy person. Methods: The study covered agroup of 20 people. In the con- ducted tests the diagnostic survey method was introduced. The technique of individual in-depth interviews was used. The re- spondent could fully express his or her own feelings, emotions, thoughts and experiences. Results. The respondents stated that positive emotions ap- peared with the completion of treatment, but indicated that the feelings were not related to the sense of healing but only to the completion of tiring therapeutic procedures. Some respondents complained about the feeling of chronic fatigue. Fatigue was not only related to the physical sphere, although everyone con- firmed that the side effects of the therapy persisted for some time. The respondents paid more attention to mental fatigue, which had various forms, e.g.: anxiety about possible relapse; functional losses; feeling of loss caused by radical treatment. Out of 20 respondents, 4 persons indicated aloss of health, es- pecially the sense of joy and happiness, self-esteem, self-con- fidence, social contacts, family and time. Conclusions: The research group consisted of 20 respondents, which limits the possibility of formulating generalized con- clusions, but indicates various directions of possible improve- ment and, most importantly, shows how the thinking about can- cer can be changed.
