Abstract Purpose Cases of iron intoxication are not very often encountered in toxicology practice, and most of those reported concern accidental intoxications with iron supplements in young children. The paper presents a rare case of a suicide by intoxication in an adult woman who ingested a solution of iron (III) chloride. Methods A forensic was at the Department of Forensic Medicine, PMU in Szczecin. Toxicology tests of blood sampled from the deceased were performed using a 644 CIBA CORNING ion selective analyzer and proprietary reagent kits. Histopathological was with the use of the standard staining protocol (hematoxylin and eosin) and staining specific for iron (Prussian blue). Results Autopsy revealed a distinct yellow discolouration and thrombotic necrosis of the oral mucosa and almost the whole gastrointestinal tract, as well as similar changes in the adjacent internal organs. Considerably high levels of iron and chloride ions were detected in specimens of internal organs preserved during autopsy. Histopathological analysis performed with the use of staining specific for iron (Prussian blue) also confirmed the presence of iron in the examined tissues, especially in the intestines and liver. Conclusions Considering the above findings, it was concluded in the forensic report that the death of the woman was caused by the ingestion of iron chloride. The reported case of fatal intoxication is one of the few described in the literature, and its course implies that in the case of initially diagnosed intoxication with corrosive compounds, the possibility of using metal-containing poison should also be considered in the differential diagnosis. In addition to routine toxicological tests performed in fatal cases we also draw attention to the possibility of using specific staining protocols for microscopic specimens.

Introduction. The preliminary diagnosis of chronic periapical lesions is made on the basis of clinical symptoms and radiographs, which is a reliable diagnostic tool, but it has only a subsidiary role since histopathological verification is essential for the definitive diagnosis. This study was aimed at diagnosing removed chronic periapical lesions and classifying them by size as well as at comparing the clinical diagnoses with histipathological results. Material and Methods. The study included 34 patients diagnosed with chronic periapical process by applying clinical examination and radiography. The removed chronic periapical lesions were processed according to classical histological technique and analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin staining protocol. Results. According to histopathological analysis 53% of chronic periapical lesions were periapical granulomas and 47% were radicular cysts. The size of the lesions ranged from < 9 mm (70% of lesions), 9 to 20 mm (18% of lesions) and > 20 mm (12% of lesions).The histopathological examination revealed that clinical diagnosis was wrong in 26% of cases. Conclusion. A statistically significant difference between clinical and histopathological diagnosis has been found. The histopathological findings strongly suggest the necessity of complete curettage of lesions sizing > 20 mm in order to prevent recurrences.

The genus Pennella comprises hematophagous parasites of marine aquatic species, including cephalopods, marine mammals, and pelagic fish. Nine species have been officially included in the genus Pennella plus another six species inquirendae. They are most often found in the host’s musculature, without penetrating internal organs. For the present study, 83 hearts from swordfish (Xiphias gladius) caught in the Mediterranean Sea were sampled and immediately fixed in formalin for histopathological analysis. In total, 10 (12.05%) hearts were found to be parasitized by copepods of the genus Pennella. Macroscopically, there was mild-to-severe fibrinous pericarditis with atrial wall thickening and multiple parasitic nodules. Histologically, the parasitic nodules were surrounded by an inflammatory-necrotizing reaction. Parasitic infestation by Pennella spp. is common in pelagic fish and in swordfish, in particular. Here, however, we report atypical cardiac localization. A future area of focus is the evaluation of cardiac Pennella spp. infestation by histopathology and genetic identification of the parasites.

Background: Due to factors such as silk sequence, purification, degradation, morphology and functionalization, each silk variant should be individually tested for potential toxicity. Aim:   In vivo toxicological evaluation of the previously characterized bioengineered H2.1MS1 spider silk particles that can deliver chemotherapeutics to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer. Materials & methods: Silk nanoparticles (H2.1MS1 and control MS1) were administered intravenously to mice, and then the organismal response was assessed. Several parameters of acute and subchronic toxicity were analyzed, including animal mortality and behavior, nanosphere biodistribution, and histopathological analysis of internal organs. Also, the complete blood count, as well as the concentration of biochemical parameters and cytokines in the serum, were examined. Results & conclusion: No toxicity of the systemically administrated silk nanosphere was observed, indicating their potential application in biomedicine.

Abstract Histopathological analysis is not a routine procedure for diagnosing fungal skin infections. In the histopathological specimens, fungi are visible only when using special stain such as periodic acid-Schiff (PAS). However, histopathological analysis may not be performed in small laboratories. Histopathological characteristics of fungal skin infections are not specific. In all skin biopsy cases, obtained without clinical suspicion of fungal infection, the knowledge of certain, most frequent histopathological reaction patterns, as well as specific histopathological indicators (a diagnostic histopathological “clue”), of certain superficial mycoses e.g., dermatophytoses, may raise a suspicion of fungal infection and warrant a fungal-specific staining. A retrospective analysis of all PAS-stained sections was carried out. All PAS-positive biopsy specimens were assessed for clinical features, histopathological patterns of skin reactions, and presence of histopathological indicators. Our results have shown that out of the total of 361 PAS-stained sections, fungal hyphae were identified in 12 (3.3%) specimens. In 5 (1.4%) cases, the diagnosis of fungal infection was suspected on clinical grounds, while in 7 (1.9%) cases detection of fungi was an unexpected finding. The most frequent type of histopathological pattern was spongiotic, and the most frequent histopathological indicator was the presence of neutrophils within the epidermis. Our results confirm that dermatophytoses may present with clinical and histological non-specific findings. PAS staining represents a relatively cheap and simple fungal-specific staining. It has been suggested that it not only confirms that the selected material is actually invaded, but also reduces the number of false-negative direct reports, where fungi are cultured from a microscopically negative specimen. Apart from a small percentage of positive findings, our results justify the need for routine PAS staining of all clinically and histologically non-specific inflammatory skin conditions.

In situ Raman spectra were taken, between 800 and 1200 cm−1, on films of polypyrrole during both the electrochemical growth and the reduction reactions. During the reduction reaction we observed a frequency shift of approximately 10 cm−1 of two in-plane vibrational modes. We attribute these shifts to the bond conjugational defects induced by doping and undoping of the polypyrrole films. A quantitative model for this phenomenon based on normal mode calculations is presented. The electrical conductivity and thermopower of polypyrrole doped with tetrafluoroborate and iron chloride ions is also reported for temperatures between 10 and 350K.

Abstract The authors present a case of a patient with extramammary Paget’s disease in the pubic region treated by a dermatologist with a private practice for almost 4 years before incisional biopsy was performed. A thorough examination showed no evidence of malignancies of internal organs, whereas definite diagnosis was made by excision of the entire skin lesion and histopathological analysis. With regard to multiple criteria, findings in our patient were consistent with current literature data, but interestingly, the primary extramammary Paget’s disease has not spread into deeper tissues.

Aim: This study evaluated the nephroprotective effect of methanol extract of Hymenocardia acida leaves in rat model of gentamicin induced renal damage. Materials and Methods: Twenty- four (24) Wistar albino rats of either sex weighing 150- 200g were divided into 4 groups of 6 animals each; Group I served as the control and received normal saline, Group II- IV received gentamicin (40 mg/kg, i.p), Groups III and IV also received 200 and 400 mg/kg body wt., p.o methanol extract of Hymenocardia acida leaves respectively for 15 days. Body weight measurement, serum urea, creatinine, electrolytes analyses and histopathological examination of kidney were carried out. Results: Gentamicin treatment caused nephrotoxicity as evidenced by marked elevation in Serum urea, creatinine, decreased sodium and chloride ions, elevated serum level of potassium ion and pathological signs such as congestion, focal areas of inflammation, tubular necrosis, and glomerular atrophy. Administration of the extract at doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg/ body wt significantly (p< 0.05) decreased Creatinine and urea levels, significantly (p< 0.05) increased sodium and chloride ion and significantly (p< 0.05)  decreased potassium ion level when compared to the gentamicin- alone- treated group. Histopathological analysis also revealed a gradual reversal of the pathological features caused by gentamicin toxicity. Conclusion: It was concluded that the extract possesses nephroprotective potential.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, histopathologically, the effectiveness of mechanical preparation of root canals using different irrigating solutions in dog teeth filled with LPS after pulpectomy. A total of 120 root canals of 6 mongrel dogs were filled with a solution of LPS after pulpectomy. The irrigating solutions used were saline, 1, 2.5, and 5% sodium hypochlorite, and 2% chlorhexidine. No irrigation was used in the control group. The animals were sacrificed after 60 days and the teeth were fixed and demineralized. Subsequently, serial 6-µm sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and Mallory's trichrome for histopathological analysis and Brown-Brenn for verification of bacterial contamination. Analysis showed that the inflammatory infiltrate was statistically less intense in the groups in which the root canals were irrigated with 5% sodium hypochlorite and 2% chlorhexidine. However, none of the irrigating solutions completely inactivated the harmful effects of LPS. Mechanical preparation associated with different irrigating solutions did not completely inactivate LPS.

AbstractA complex network of nerve fibers of the enteric nervous system and enteroendocrine cells is known to regulate the gastrointestinal tract. The distribution and frequency of the argyrophil, argentaffin and serotonin immunoreactive endocrine cells and of the submucosal and myenteric nervous ganglia were studied in the small intestine of the capybaraHydrochoerus hydrochaeris, aiming to verify the existence of possible numerical correlations between endocrine cells and nervous ganglia. Fragments of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum of adult animals were collected and processed according to routine histological techniques. To study the nervous ganglia, hematoxylin and eosin staining was used, while specific staining techniques were used to study the argyrophil, argentaffin and serotonin immunoreactive endocrine cells: Grimelius, modified Masson-Fontana and peroxidase anti-peroxidase, respectively. Endocrine cells were more abundant in the area of the crypts and, in relation to their morphology, ‘open type’ endocrine cells prevailed. The population of argyrophil cells was larger than that of argentaffin cells, and these cells were larger than serotonin immunoreactive cells. The frequency of endocrine cells was apparently greater in the duodenum, indicating the importance of this intestinal segment in digestive and absorptive functions. Prominent nervous ganglia were observed in the submucosal and myenteric plexi, and were larger and more frequent in the myenteric plexus. A numerical correlation was found among the endocrine cells (argentaffin and serotonin immunoreactive cells) and the myenteric nervous ganglia, suggesting the presence of physiological interactions among the endocrine and nervous systems for the control of intestinal activities. The findings in this study contribute to the understanding of the digestive processes of this species, which may also help in its conservation and future survival.
