Abstract Electrospun AOPAN/PVDF composite nanofiber membranes for metal ions treatment have been prepared by coaxial electrospinning. AOPAN shell layer was modified chemically for adsorbing metal ions by chelation, whereas the chemically stable PVDF inner core was for maintaining mechanical stability. Polymer concentration and applied voltage had obvious influence on the characteristics of the fibers’ structure, morphology and strength. The amidoxime reaction was sensitive to the pH value of solution, and it was found that the alkaline condition hindered the reaction. The characterization by SEM, FTIR and XRD showed that the AOPAN/PVDF membrane retained the core–shell structure integrity after chemical modification. In the static and dynamic adsorption experiments, the mechanical strength of the AOPAN/PVDF membrane did not change obviously within 5 cycles of adsorption and regeneration. In addition, the AOPAN/PVDF membranes showed a certain level of efficiency in removal of Pb2+ in aqueous solution; the adsorption capacities of the membranes in the 5th run were higher than 45% of the adsorption of the corresponding fresh membranes. The work provides a potential approach for preparing membranes having good feasibility for practical application in adsorption separation of metal ions. Graphical Abstract

This paper presents the synthesis and evaluation of physicochemical behavior of a new series of N-alkyl-bis-o-aminobenzamides (BOABs) in aqueous solution. The study was targeted to the complexing capacity of five metal ions (Fe2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+) of environmental concern as the medullar principle of a liquid phase sensor for its application in the determination of these metal ions due to its versatility of use. Molecular fluorescence, UV-visible and Zeta potential were measured for five BOABs and the effect of alkyl groups with different central chain length (n = 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10) on physicochemical performance determined. The results have shown that these derivatives present higher sensibility and selectivity for Cu2+ even in the presence of the other metal ions. An additional application test was done adding a pectin (0.1 wt %) solution to the BOAB-Cu+2 complex to obtain a precipitate (flocs) as a potential selective separation process of Cu from aqueous solution. The solid was then lyophilized and analyzed by SEM-EDS, the images showed spheric forms containing Cu+2 with diameter of approximately of 8 μm and 30 wt %.

In this experiment quartz sand was chosen as a carrier to be coated by aluminous salt under alkaline condition, and then the specific surface area was tested, and the adsorption capability and Cd2+ removal influencing factors of modified sand were studied. The investigation results showed that the specific surface area of modified sand was 75.244m2/g which was 9.38 times of that of original sand; the removal efficiency of Cd2+ by aluminous salt modified sand reached 59% contrast to 39% of original sand with pH 7.00. It was also found that the removal efficiency of Cd2+ by the aluminous salt modified sand was reduced with the increase of initial concentration of Cd2+ solution, and was enhanced with the increase of pH value, the Cd2+ removal efficiency was almost 71% with pH 9.0.

The manganese sulfate solution leached from low-grade pyrolusite with pyrite and H2SO4 contains heavy metal ions of high concentration, influencing the quality of the final products of manganese compounds and causing manganese ions not to be electrolyzed. The present study was focused on the separation of Co, Ni and Zn ions from the leached solution with BaS. By controlling the pH value at 5.0-6.5, temperature at 50-60°C, reaction time at 15 min and mixing velocity at 78 rpm, the heavy metal ions could be separated effectively. Under the above optimized conditions, the ion concentration of Co, Ni, and Zn in the solution was reduced to 0.06 mg.L-1, 0.27mg.L-1 and 0.01mg.L-1, and the separation efficiency was 99.72%, 99.18% and 99.9% respectively. The obtained pure solution meets the demands of manganese electrowinning.

A novel flow configuration was explored for the study of the behavior of drag reducing polymers. A screw pump consisting of a smooth cylinder and a concentrically placed screw was used to create a strongly three-dimensional but essentially laminar flow. In the first phase of the study, the static pressure head developed by the screw pump was measured as a function of polymer concentration (polyox 10 to 100 ppm in water). A large increase of the developed head was observed that behaved in an analogous manner to drag reduction as far as concentration and straining of the polymer solution was concerned. In the second phase of the study, a new apparatus was constructed and the additional parameter of a superimposed through flow was included and the degree of failure of the superposition principle was established. Sensitivity of the phenomenon to chemicals like HCl, HNO3, and NaOH in the polymer solution was also studied. When the effect of these chemicals on the polymer solution flow behavior was presented in terms of the pH value of the polymer solution, it showed a similar trend to those observed in drag reduction.
