Typha angustifolia L. and Typha ×glauca Godron have increased their ranges on the North American continent over the past 150 years, and the pollen record has potential to document this spread. In T. angustifolia, pollen disperses as a reticulate, monoporate monad, similar in appearance to the pollen of Sparganium eurycarpum Engelm. Typha angustifolia and Sparganium are generally not distinguished, and T. ×glauca is rarely shown on pollen diagrams. My study of pollen reference material shows that Typha monads and Sparganium can be separated using diameter and roundness at a known level of statistical confidence. Typha monads are on average significantly smaller in diameter (mean and standard deviation = 22.7 ± 2.6 µm) than Sparganium (25.3 ± 2.7 µm). The incidence of angularity is higher in T. angusti folia pollen grains, whereas Sparganium grains are more often rounded. The pollen signature of T. ×glauca consists of mostly monads, but can contain up to 30% dyads, and (or) 14% tetrads, and (or) 10% triads. I suggest that T. angusti folia and T. ×glauca can be identified as one category in the pollen record and, where their dates of arrival are known, this category may be used as a chronostratigraphic indicator.Key words: Typha, Sparganium, pollen, invasive species, wetlands.

The concentrations of Cu and Zn were measured in shoots of plants Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin ex Steud., Typha latifolia L. and Typha angustifolia L. at four locations in the area Bardaca (Necik - neglected fishpond, Lug - fishpond used for recreation activities, Sinjak - active fishpond and Matura - river connected to some of the fishponds). In all these types of water bodies, Zn and Cu concentrations were the highest in young plants (May-June) and then declined until the end of the season, especially in September. Phragmites australis has accumulated higher amounts of Zn than Typha latifolia and Typha angustifolia, whereas for Cu the difference between species was not so clear. In relation to the site, the largest concentrations of Zn and Cu were recorded in plants from the sites Sinjak and Matura, followed by Necik and Lug respectively. Such site specific differences are related to specific ecological conditions at each habitat.

A large number of macrophytes, often in dense populations, have developed on the Grliste Reservoir, Serbia over a period of 15 years. Fast development of vegetation is a consequence of anthropogenic impact in lake management. The methodology used in this research covered 100% of the water body, including all areas with or without aquatic plants. The results indicate that plant communities are still in the early phase of development. This leaves space for future development of competitor macrophyte species (Najas marina, Eleocharis palustris, Typha latifolia, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis, etc.) capable of endangering stability of the lake, which will tend toward eutrophication.

The heathland form of Banksia marginata Cav. regenerates rarely from seed but commonly by resprout- ing from buds on lateral roots, whereas Banksia ornata F. Muell. regenerates only from seed, usually released after fire. The two species co-occur in heath vegetation on nutrient-poor soils in south-eastern South Australia and western Victoria. Shoots were sampled from stands of B. marginata aged from 1 to 25 years and of B. ornata aged from 1 to 50+ years after fire in the Little Desert National Park, western Victoria. B. marginata, the resprouter, distributed a greater proportion of the total shoot dry matter and content of all nutrients to vegetative growth over its shorter life span than B. ornata, the non-sprouter. About 50% of the total phosphorus in B. ornata shoots at 50+ years was present in cones (including seeds) compared with only about 20% in B. marginata shoots at a comparable stage of senescence (25 years). This difference between the species was also true to a lesser degree for nitrogen. There were considerable differences between other nutrients in their distribution patterns in shoots. Nutrients could be grouped together on the basis of distribution in shoots more satisfactorily than on presumed physio- logical roles. Stems were major sites of nutrient accumulation in both species. The content of a particular nutrient in seeds as a proportion of the content in the living parts of the shoot ranged from 0.03% (Na, Mn) to 2.0% (P) in B. marginata, and from 0.3% (Na) to as high as 31% (P) in B. ornata. Concen- trations of all nutrients except sodium were much higher in seeds than in the woody cones or vegetative organs of both species; seeds of B. ornata were particularly rich in calcium and manganese. We conclude that the different patterns of distribution of biomass and nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, within shoots of the two species reflect their different regenerative modes after fire. Στην παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή, τα πειράματα της οποίας πραγματοποιήθηκαν κατά τα έτη 2012 – 2017, μελετήθηκαν στοιχεία της βιολογίας και οικολογίας του αρπακτικού ακάρεως Amblydromalus limonicus Garman and McGregor (Acari: Phytoseiidae) καθώς και ο ρόλος της γύρης ως εναλλακτικής / συμπληρωματικής τροφής του αρπακτικού στο πλαίσιο ενός προγράμματος ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης. Ειδικότερα, διερευνήθηκαν: α) η διατροφική αξία της γύρης επιλεγμένων φυτικών ειδών ως εναλλακτικής / συμπληρωματικής τροφής του αρπακτικού, β) η ενδοσυντεχνιακή θήρευση και ο ρόλος της γύρης στην ιδιαίτερη αυτή μορφή αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ του A. limonicus και τριών ενδημικών ειδών αρπακτικών ακάρεων Phytoseiidae και γ) η δυνατότητα αξιοποίησης της γύρης (ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής) με στόχο τον περιορισμό της έντασης των υποθανατηφόρων επιδράσεων έκθεσης του A. limonicus σε νωπά υπολείμματα ψεκασμού του εντομοκτόνου flonicamid.Από την ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων διαπιστώθηκε ότι μεταξύ των διαφορετικών ειδών γύρης που αξιολογήθηκαν, η γύρη του φυτού Typha latifolia παρουσίασε την υψηλότερη διατροφική αξία ως εναλλακτική τροφή του A. limonicus. Ως υψηλής, ενδιάμεσης και χαμηλής, αντιστοίχως διατροφικής αξίας χαρακτηρίστηκαν η γύρη του αραβοσίτου, της ελιάς και του πεύκου.Διαπιστώθηκε ότι η παροχή γύρης υψηλής διατροφικής αξίας ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής του αρπακτικού ακάρεως A. limonicus προκαλεί σημαντική μείωση της κατανάλωσης προνυμφών θρίπα η οποία ωστόσο, αντισταθμίζεται σε σημαντικό βαθμό μέσω της αριθμητικής απόκρισης (αύξηση ωοπαραγωγής) του θηρευτή, ενισχύοντας τελικά την αποτελεσματικότητά του ως παράγοντα βιολογικής καταπολέμησης. Αντίθετα, η παροχή γύρης χαμηλής διατροφικής αξίας (γύρη πεύκου) είχε ως αποτέλεσμα την περιορισμένη, αν και στατιστικώς σημαντική, μείωση της θήρευσης χωρίς επιπλέον ισχυρή ενίσχυση της αριθμητικής απόκρισης του αρπακτικού. Συμπερασματικά, η παροχή γύρης ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής του A. limonicus μπορεί να έχει ως συνέπεια τον σημαντικό περιορισμό της κατανάλωσης λείας. Ωστόσο, στην περίπτωση της υψηλής διατροφικής αξίας γύρης Typha angustifolia η αύξηση της αριθμητικής απόκρισης του αρπακτικού μπορεί τελικά να ενισχύσει την αποτελεσματικότητα της βιολογικής καταπολέμησης.Η παροχή γύρης ως εναλλακτικής τροφής επηρέασε σημαντικά την ένταση της ενδοσυντεχνιακής θήρευσης μεταξύ του A. limonicus και των ενδημικών ειδών Euseius finlandicus, Euseius stipulatus και Iphiseius degenerans. Σε συνθήκες απουσίας λείας ή εναλλακτικής τροφής (γύρης), το A. limonicus φαίνεται ότι είναι ισχυρότερος ενδοσυντεχνιακός θηρευτής σε σχέση με τα E. finlandicus και E. stipulatus, υποδεέστερος ωστόσο του I. degenerans. Η παροχή γύρης μείωσε την ένταση της ενδοσυντεχνιακής θήρευσης. Ωστόσο, το A. limonicus παρέμεινε ανταγωνιστικά υπέρτερο των ενδημικών ειδών E. finlandicus και E. stipulatus.Τέλος η παροχή γύρης ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής του A. limonicus περιόρισε σημαντικά τις αρνητικές υποθανατηφόρες επιδράσεις της έκθεσης του αρπακτικού σε νωπά υπολείμματα ψεκασμού του εντομοκτόνου flonicamid. Η συχνή παροχή μικρών ποσοτήτων του εμπορικά διαθέσιμου σκευάσματος γύρης (NutrimiteTM, Biobest N.V.) του φυτού T. angustifolia μετά από την εφαρμογή ενός εντομοκτόνου μέτριας τοξικότητας μπορεί να αποτελέσει ένα αποτελεσματικό διαχειριστικό εργαλείο ενίσχυσης της χρήσης του A. limonicus και σε προγράμματα ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης συνδυαστικά με τη χημική καταπολέμηση.Συμπερασματικά, το αρπακτικό άκαρι A. limonicus μπορεί να αναπτύσσεται και να αναπαράγεται με επιτυχία σε γύρεις διαφορετικών φυτικών ειδών. Η παροχή γύρης ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής (συνδυασμένη κατανάλωση γύρης και λείας) μπορεί να ενισχύει περαιτέρω τη δυναμική αύξησης του πληθυσμού του ακάρεως, ιδιαίτερα στην περίπτωση της γύρης του T. latifolia. Η συχνή παροχή μικρών ποσοτήτων γύρης (T. angustifolia) ως συμπληρωματικής τροφής μπορεί να εξαλείψει τις υποθανατηφόρες επιδράσεις της έκθεσης σε υπολείμματα ψεκασμού ενός εντομοκτόνου μέτριας τοξικότητας. Ως εναλλακτική τροφή (απουσία λείας), η παροχή γύρης μειώνει την ένταση της ενδοσυντεχνιακής θήρευσης μεταξύ του A. limonicus και των τριών ενδημικών ειδών αρπακτικών ακάρεων E. finlandicus, E. stipulatus και I. degenerans. Ωστόσο, ακόμα και στην περίπτωση αυτή, το εξωτικό είδος ως ανταγωνιστικά υπέρτερο, μπορεί να συνεχίσει να αποτελεί κίνδυνο για τα ενδημικά είδη του γένους Euseius. Τα παραπάνω ευρήματα διευρύνουν τις γνώσεις μας σχετικά με τη βιολογία του A. limonicus και τις δυνατοτήτες αξιοποίησης της γύρης επιλεγμένων φυτικών ειδών ως μέσου ενίσχυσης της αποτελεσματικότητας αρπακτικών ακάρεων σε προγράμματα ολοκληρωμένης διαχείρισης ή βιολογικής καταπολέμησης εχθρών των καλλιεργειών.

In three wetlands in southeastern Ontario, ferric hydroxide was deposited on the roots of Typha latifolia (maximum, 67 × 103 ppm); in four other wetlands, deposition was negligible (< 103 ppm). Iron deposition was seasonal, with the peak period in July–August corresponding to peak biomass production of shoots. In one wetland where Carex rostrata and Phragmites australis occurred, seasonal plaque formation was similar. Plaque formation was not obviously related to Eh and pH regimes.

AbstractDecomposition of air-dried live Typha angustifolia (L) stems and leaves and Phragmites australis (Cav. Trin ex Steud.) leaves and culms were studied in a shallow freshwater lake (Lake Fehér, Fertő-Hanság National Park, Hungary) using the litter bag technique. Samples were analyzed for dry mass, fiber (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin) and nutrient (C, N, P, S) contents, litter-associated fungal biomass (ergosterol concentration), potential microbial respiration (electron transport activity: ETS) and cellulolytic bacteria. In terms of mesh size, there were no significant differences in the examined parameters of P. australis leaves and culms and T. angustifolia stems with leaves. P. australis leaves had the highest rate of decomposition and P. australis culms the lowest. Hemicellulose degraded more rapidly than the other fibers, while the lignin had the slowest rate of decomposition.The ETS activity of the examined plant litter types increased from day 91st to 237th while decomposition processes were most active, ergosterol contents were high, and there were few cellulolytic bacteria. The counts of cellulolytic bacteria fluctuated during the decomposition period, they were high at the beginning then they decreased. In each case bacteria were found to be the first colonizers of plant detritus, and were followed by fungal growth.
