This study examines various work and retirement orientations and ascertains how they apply to four a priori-defined groups. Questionnaire data from an age-stratified random sample of 584 men and women, aged sixty to seventy-five, were analyzed by means of stepwise multiple discriminant analysis. Fourteen out of twenty-five variables contributed significantly to three functions, correctly classifying 54 per cent of the individuals. It was found that preretirees, although anticipating loss of employment after retiring, displayed the least work satisfaction and preferred a lower retirement age, manifesting simultaneous positive attitudes toward retirees and their gatherings; early retirees were characterized by negative attitudes toward work as well as retirement and by ambiguous views of retirees and social integration; working retirees appeared the most work-oriented and evidenced distaste for retirement; fully retired persons were characterized as retirement-oriented and as being negative toward social activities. The results are discussed within the context of previous hypotheses and related findings.

Background: Although low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and obesity are often associated with a deteriorated cardiometabolic risk profile including low-grade inflammation, the respective contributions of specific indices of body fat distribution and CRF to variation of inflammatory markers remains uncertain. We therefore sought to determine the respective contributions of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation and CRF to variation of inflammatory markers in middle-aged men and women. Methods and Results: A complete lipoprotein-lipid profile and circulating levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and adiponectin were obtained and in a sample of healthy men (n=120) and women (n=152) covering a wide range of obesity values. VAT accumulation was measured by computed tomography and CRF levels were measured by a progressive submaximal physical working capacity test. In both men and women, VAT was positively associated with CRP and IL-6 levels (r≥0.35, p<0.0001), negatively associated with adiponectin (r≤ −0.29, p≤0.0003), after adjusting for CRF. After adjusting for VAT, CRF was not associated with variation in inflammatory markers in women and only with adiponectin in men (r= −0.20, p=0.03). An inflammation score was developed based on the sex-specific 50 th percentile values of each inflammatory marker (0 or 1) which yielded a score ranging from 0 (low) to 4 (high). Participants who scored 0, 1 or 2 were considered as having a low score and participants who scored 3 or 4 had an elevated inflammation score. In participants with low VAT (<130cm 2 for men and <100cm 2 for women), the prevalence of participants with an elevated inflammation score was of 23.9% and of 28.0%, respectively for participants with high and low CRF, whereas in participants with an elevated VAT accumulation, the prevalence of an elevated inflammation score was of 60.0% and of 61.7%, respectively for high and low CRF. Conclusions: These results suggest that the inflammatory state associated with low CRF is largely attributable to the increased VAT accumulation often observed in poorly fit individuals.

Social support has been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), particularly in individuals who have sustained a cardiovascular event. This study investigated the relationship between social support and subclinical CAD among 1067 healthy middle-aged men and women. Social support was assessed with validated social integration and emotional attachment measures. Subclinical CAD was assessed as a coronary artery calcium score (CACS) using computed tomography. There was no association between social support and CACS in men. In women, low social support was strongly linked to cardiovascular risk factors, high levels of inflammatory markers, and CACS > 0. In a logistic regression model, after adjustment for 12 cardiovascular risk factors, the odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) for CACS > 0 in women with the lowest social integration, emotional attachment, and social support groups (reference: highest corresponding group) were 2.47 (1.23–5.12), 1.87 (0.93–3.59), and 4.28 (1.52–12.28), respectively. Using a machine learning approach (random forest), social integration was the fourth (out of 12) most important risk factor for CACS > 0 in women. Women with lower compared to higher or moderate social integration levels were about 14 years older in “vascular age”. This study showed an association between lack of social support and subclinical CAD in middle-aged women, but not in men. Lack of social support may affect the atherosclerotic process and identify individuals vulnerable to CAD events.

Bologna, with its 410,000 inhabitants, faces a number problems on account of its rapid growth. Many immigrants, coming from the countryside around Bolo na, from Ferrara and from the South of Italy, have settled on its rapidly growing borders. Living conditions often leave much to be desired. They certainly do not favour social integration. A campaign to build a number of new churches was launched in the Diocese of Bologna. A plan fort the creation of thirty new parishes was adopted in 1955. It indicated the site of each of the new churches according to sound town planning principles. The new parishes, as the various witnesses show, call for team work directed to build up new commu nities. The faithful take an active part in this effort. Integration is achieved on the social as well as at the religious level. This is particularly due to a series of efforts realised at the parish level and directed towards young men and women.

Prolactin producing pituitary adenomas are ultrastructurally characterized by secretory granules varying in size (150-300nm), abundance of endoplasmic reticulum, and misplaced exocytosis. They are also subclassified as sparsely or densely granulated according to the amount of granules present. The hormone levels in men and women vary, being higher in men; so also the symptoms vary between both sexes. In order to understand this variation, we studied 21 prolactin producing pituitary adenomas by transmission electron microscope. This was out of a total of 80 pituitary adenomas. There were 6 men and 15 women in this group of 21 prolactinomas. All of the pituitary adenomas were fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde, rinsed in Millonig's phosphate buffer, and post fixed with 1% osmium tetroxide. They were then en bloc stained with 0.5% uranyl acetate, rinsed with Walpole's non-phosphate buffer, dehydrated with graded series of ethanols and embedded with Epon 812 epoxy resin.

Two separate studies investigated race and sex differences in normal auditory sensitivity. Study I measured thresholds at 500, 1000, and 2000 cps of 23 white men, 26 white women, 21 negro men, and 24 negro women using the method of limits. In Study II thresholds of 10 white men, 10 white women, 10 negro men, and 10 negro women were measured at 1000 cps using four different stimulus conditions and the method of adjustment by means of Bekesy audiometry. Results indicated that the white men and women in Study I heard significantly better than their negro counterparts at 1000 and 2000 cps. There were no significant differences between the average thresholds measured at 1000 cps of the white and negro men in Study II. White women produced better auditory thresholds with three stimulus conditions and significantly more sensitive thresholds with the slow pulsed stimulus than did the negro women in Study II.
