The inhibitory effect of smallanthaditerpenic acids A, B, C and D previously isolated from leaves of Smallanthus sonchifolius (yacon) on α-glucosidase were examined and their IC50 were determined to be 0.48 mg/mL, 0.59 mg/mL, 1.00 mg/mL, and 1.17 mg/mL respectively. In addition, a rapid, reliable RP-HPLC method for the analysis of chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and smallanthaditerpenic acids A and C in yacon leaves was established, and the variation in their contents in leaves from plants cultivated in different places and collected at different times of the year were compared. The established analytical method for determining smallanthaditerpenic acids A and C, chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid presented good results and could be used as a method for the quality control of S. sonchifolius leaves.

To achieve efficient removal of phenolic pollutants in water, the catalyst of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 was prepared. In the presence of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3, microwave-induced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) catalytic oxidation process was conducted for the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing PNP, a representative of phenolic pollutants. Effectiveness of the process and factors influencing PNP removal were investigated and results showed microwave-induced H2O2-Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 process could achieve 99.41% PNP removal percentage, corresponding to 77.9% TOC removal in a given condition. The process remained effective in the 2-8 pH range with high reusability of Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. The kinetics study showed microwave-induced H2O2-Fe (III)-Cu (II)/γ-Al2O3 process could be divided into microwave induction stage and catalytic oxidation stage, both of which fitted first-order kinetics, with reaction rate constants of 0.0453 min-1 and 4.7552 min-1 respectively.

A Gram-positive bacterium, designated strain PG-02T, was isolated by serial dilution from aerobic granules obtained from a laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactor for bioremediation of phenolic wastewater. Strain PG-02T grew axenically as cocci and is an oxidase-negative and catalase-positive, non-motile facultative anaerobe. It does not reduce nitrate and grows between 15 and 37 °C, with an optimum temperature of 30 °C. The pH range for growth is between 5.0 and 8.5, with an optimum pH of 7.0. Strain PG-02T contains type A3γ peptidoglycan (ll-A2pm←Gly with alanine at position 1 of the peptide subunit). The G+C content of the DNA is 69 mol%. Menaquinone MK-9(H4) was the major isoprenoid quinone. The polar lipids included diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol, while 13-methyltetradecanoic acid (i-C15 : 0) and 1,1-dimethoxy-iso-pentadecane (i-C15 : 0 DMA) were the major components in whole-cell methanolysates. PG-02T stained positively for intracellular polyphosphate granules but not poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates. It produces capsular material and possesses an autoaggregation capability. Phenotypic and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that PG-02T differed from its closest phylogenetic relatives, namely members of the suborder Propionibacterineae, which includes the genera Tessaracoccus, Microlunatus, Luteococcus, Micropruina, Propionibacterium, Propioniferax, Nocardioides, Friedmanniella and Aeromicrobium, and that it should be placed in a new genus and species as Granulicoccus phenolivorans gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain of Granulicoccus phenolivorans is PG-02T (=ATCC BAA-1292T=DSM 17626T).

The large scale of the contamination by the former carbo-chemical industry in Germany requires new and often interdisciplinary approaches for performing an economically sustainable remediation. For example, a highly toxic and dark-colored phenolic wastewater from a lignite pyrolysis factory was filled into a former open-cast pit, forming a large wastewater disposal pond. This caused an extensive environmental pollution, calling for an ecologically and economically acceptable strategy for remediation. Laboratory-scale investigations and pilot-scale tests were carried out. The result was the development of a strategy for an implementation of full-scale enhanced in situ natural attenuation on the basis of separate habitats in a meromictic pond. Long-term monitoring of the chemical and biological dynamics of the pond demonstrates the metamorphosis of a former highly polluted industrial waste deposition into a nature-integrated ecosystem with reduced danger for the environment, and confirmed the strategy for the chosen remediation management.

Beneficial effects of prebiotics like inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) have been proven in health and nutrition. Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius), an Andean crop, contains FOS (50–70 % of its dry weight) and, therefore, is considered a prebiotic. Commercial FOS can up-regulate total secretory IgA (S-IgA) in infant mice, prevent infection with Salmonella in swine or enhance immune response for Salmonella vaccine in a mouse model. Previously, we found that administration of yacon root flour regulates gut microbiota balance and has immunomodulatory effects without inflammatory responses. The aim of the present paper is to analyse if yacon prevents enteric infection caused by a strain of Salmonella enteritidis serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) in a mouse model. BALB/c mice were supplemented with yacon flour (45 d), challenged with S. Typhimurium and killed to study pathogen translocation, total and specific IgA production by ELISA, presence of IgA and other cytokines and Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and clustor of differentiation 206 (CD206) receptors positive cells by immunofluorescence and histological changes. Yacon flour administration had a protective effect from 15 to 30 d of treatment. We found a peak of total S-IgA production without translocation of the pathogen for these periods. At 30 d, there was an increase in IL-6 and macrophage inflammatory proteins-1α+ cells and expression of the receptors CD206 and TLR4. Yacon flour did not have incidence in pathogen-specific S-IgA production. Longer periods (45 d) of administration had no protective effect. Therefore, yacon can prevent enteric infection caused by S. Typhimurium when given up to 30 d; this effect would be mediated by enhancing non-specific immunity, such as total S-IgA, that improves the immunological intestinal barrier.
