<em>The rate of conversion of paddy fields and irrigation water crisis suggest to consider the development of upland rice. Empowerment of organic-based dryland done to increase rice, as well as environmental sustainability efforts. The purpose of this experiment was to determine the effect of organic fertilizer residue to upland rice in the second growing season. Experiments using a split-split plot design. The main plot consisted of a dosage of 50% and 100% organic fertilizer in the first growing season. Sub plot consisted of chicken manure (20 tons ha-1), <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Centrosema</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">pubescens</span> (4.3 tons ha-1) + chicken manure (10 tons ha-1), and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Thitonia</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">diversifolia</span> (4.3 tons ha-1) + chicken manure (10 tons ha-1). Sub-sub plot consist of Danau Gaung and Batu Tegi varieties. The different types of fertilizer had no effect on plant productivity. The addition of <span style="text-decoration: underline;">Thitonia</span> <span style="text-decoration: underline;">diversifolia</span> gave a good effect on some growth variable and its resistance due pathogen attack. Batu Tegi varieties are varieties that give the best response from an organic fertilizer. Interaction between dosage, type of fertilizer, and varieties do not provide areal impact.</em>

Chicken manure wastewaters are increasingly being considered a valuable resource of organic compounds. Screened chicken manure was evaluated as a representative solid organic waste. In this study, electricity generation from livestock wastewater (chicken manure) was investigated in a continuous mediator-less horizontal flow microbial fuel cell with graphite electrodes and a selective type of membrane separating the anodic and cathodic compartments of MFC from each other. The performance of MFC was evaluated to livestock wastewater using aged anaerobic sludge. Results revealed that COD and BOD removal efficiencies were up to 88% and 82%, respectively. At an external resistance value of 150 Ω, a maximum power and current densities of 278 m.W/m2 and 683 mA/m2, respectively were obtained, hence MFC utilizing livestock wastewater would be a sustainable and reliable source of bio-energy generation .

The phenomenon of anoxic phosphate uptake with simultaneous denitrification was studied. For this purpose kinetic batch tests have been carried out by using the activated sludge samples from three modifications of nutrient removal activated sludge systems: two based on an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) system and a third on an anaerobic-oxic (A/O) system. The results showed significant differences in anoxic phosphate uptake rate between activated sludge which was alternatively exposed to anoxic conditions and activated sludge from the A/O arrangement. These differences were also accompanied by different denitrification rates. Simultaneously with batch experiments the microscopic observation of activated sludge samples was carried out. Neisser and Gram stained samples showed clear differences in shape, size and distribution of polyphosphate accumulating bacteria between A2/O and A/O Processes. Moreover, experiments performed using genetic probes confirmed the differences in microbiological composition of activated sludge samples from different nutrient removal system arrangements.

Background and Objective: Histone deacetylases (HDACs) are important therapeutic targets for many types of human cancers. A derivative of valproic acid, N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propylpentanamide (HO-AAVPA), has antiproliferative properties on some cancer cell lines and inhibits the HDAC1 isoform. Materials and Methods: In this work, HO-AAVPA was tested as an antiproliferative agent in U87-MG (human glioblastoma) and U-2 OS cells (human osteosarcoma), which are types of cancer that are difficult to treat, and its antiangiogenic properties were explored. Results: HO-AAVPA had antiproliferative effects at 48 h with an IC50 = 0.655 mM in U87-MG cells and an IC50 = 0.453 mM in U-2 OS cells. Additionally, in the colony formation assay, HO-AAVPA decreased the number of colonies by approximately 99% in both cell lines and induced apoptosis by 31.3% in the U-2 OS cell line and by 78.2% in the U87-MG cell line. Additionally, HO-AAVPA reduced the number of vessels in chorioallantoid membranes (CAMs) by approximately 67.74% and IL-6 levels in both cell lines suggesting that the biochemical mechanism on cancer cell of HO-AAVPA is different compared to VPA. Conclusion: HO-AAVPA has antiproliferative effects on glioblastoma and osteosarcoma and antiangiogenic properties.

Green asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is a widely grown and consumed crop which provides high-level nutritional interest. In recent years, the decline syndrome in asparagus plantations has been rapidly augmenting. This syndrome causes the early death of whole plants, also negatively affecting the new replanting. Decline causes notable economic losses in the sector. The objective of this work was to verify the effect of different treatments against asparagus decline syndrome on the physiological parameters and nutritional quality of the spears. To meet the objective, four different treatments were applied to asparagus plots strongly affected by decline syndrome: (T1) untreated control soil, (T2) biofumigation with Brassica pellets, (T3) biofumigation with chicken manure pellets, and (T4) disinfestation of the soil with Dazomet. The cumulative yield and physiological and quality parameters of green asparagus spears were studied. Thus, malondialdehyde (MDA), photosynthetic pigments, glutathione (GSH), ascorbate (AsA), total phenols, flavonoids, anthocyanin, antioxidant test, mineral nutrients, and the amino acid profile were measured on asparagus spears. The results showed that the Brassica pellets and Dazomet treatments were the most effective against the damage caused by the decline syndrome. However, it would be necessary to monitor the evolution in the following years.
