SUMMARYSchool closure is one of the most common interventions in the early weeks of an influenza pandemic. Few studies have investigated social contact patterns and compared individual student contact characteristics during the school term and holiday periods in Taiwan. Here, we conducted a well-used questionnaire survey in a junior high school (grades 7–8) in June 2013. All 150 diary-based effective questionnaires covering conversation and skin-to-skin contact behaviour were surveyed. Two questionnaires for each participant were designed to investigate the individual-level difference of contact numbers per day during the two periods. The questionnaire response rate was 44%. The average number of contacts during term time (20·0 contacts per day) and holiday periods (12·6 contacts per day) were significantly different (P < 0·05). The dominant contact frequencies and duration were everyday contact (89·10%) and contacts lasting less than 5 minutes (37·09%). The greatest differences occurred within the 13–19 years age groups. The result presented in this study provide an indication of the likely reduction in daily contact frequency that might occur if a school closure policy was adopted in the event of an influenza pandemic in Taiwan. Comparing contact patterns during term time and holiday periods, the number of contacts decreased by 40%. This study is the first research to investigate the contact numbers and contact characteristics for school-age children during the school term and a holiday period in Taiwan. With regard to public health, this study could provide the basic contact information and database for modelling influenza epidemics for minimizing the spread of influenza that depends on personal contacts for transmission.

Abstract The aim was to compare the social skills of preschool and school-age children, considering groups differentiated by behavior problem indicators, according to the assessment performed by parents and teachers. Children of both genders participated in this study. Parents/primary caregivers assessed 194 children and 294 children were assessed by their teachers. The results indicated that, for the parents and teachers, the children without problems were more socially skilled. The gender of the children distinguished the repertoire of social skills, according to their parents, mainly the school-age children. For the teachers, considering both school periods, girls were more socially skilled and, for both parents and teachers, boys presented more behavior problems. These data have implications for assessment and intervention procedures.

Participating in outdoor sports in blue spaces is recognized to produce a range of significant social benefits. This case study empirically analyzes the social benefits associated with the School Nautical Activities project carried out in Viana do Castelo (Portugal) in school-age children and adolescents. It consisted of a 4 year program in which scholars took part in nautical activities (surfing, rowing, sailing, and canoeing) in blue spaces once a week during a semester as a part of their physical education course. The methods used for data collection were as follows: (1) a survey answered by 595 participants in the program and (2) five focus groups (FG): two FGs with participants (seven on each FG), two FGs with their parents (eight participants each), and one FG with the physical education teachers (five participants). Interviews were transcribed and qualitative analysis with NVivo software was developed. Results revealed clear evidence on the social benefits for school-age children and adolescents associated with participation in outdoor activities in blue spaces both in the overall health and in all the following analyzed categories: mental health and well-being, education, active citizenship, social behavior, and environmental awareness. More than 40% state that their overall health is much better now (13.4%) or somewhat better now (29.9%) due to their participation in the program. Thus, this article provides support for the anecdotal recognition of the benefits for school-age children and adolescents from participating in sports in the outdoors and especially in blue spaces.

Social workers recognize that this development is taking place within the context of culture and systems and are oriented toward assisting the most vulnerable members of society. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are connected to later in life health risk behaviors and serious medical, mental health, and substance abuse problems. The social work profession is poised to work comprehensively in supporting healthy child development and intervening when development has been derailed by ACEs. This builds human capital, which is profitable to society.

In the practice of a teacher-psychologist at the School of Distance Education, the game “Sign me up as an astronaut”, developed by the author, was tested, aimed at developing the skills of social and psychological interaction in younger adolescents with disabilities through the awareness and strengthening of personal resources by means of game psychocorrection. The specifics of the work of a psychologist at the School of Distance Education are determined by the following circumstances: - students have a severe disability and the corresponding psychophysical characteristics: instability of the emotional-volitional sphere, lack of motivation, severe physical and mental fatigue, low level of social skills, etc. - the use of distance educational technologies in psychocorrectional work; - lack of methodological recommendations for psychocorrectional work in conditions of distance technologies with school-age children. Such recommendations are available mainly for adults, they relate to the educational process, but they do not cover the correctional process. There is enough scientific and methodological literature on psychological and pedagogical correction, which is the basis for ensuring the work of a practicing psychologist, but there are difficulties in transferring these techniques, games, etc. - to the remote mode of correctional and developmental work, especially in the form of group work. During the game, various social and psychological situations are solved, which are selected strictly according to the characteristics of the social experience of the participants.

ABSTRAKBermain pada anak akan mengembangkan berbagai kemampuan dan anak akan belajar untuk beradaptasi dengan lingkungan, sehingga anak akan cepat mengatasi masalah yang timbul. Perilaku sosial merupakan salah satu indikator untuk menilai bagaimana pertumbuhan optimal anak. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh terapi bermain Assosiative Play menggunakan bola terhadap perkembangan sosial anak usia pra-sekolah di TK Aisyiyah Prajurit Kulon Kota Mojokerto. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan analitik korelasi dengan desain pre-experimental one group pre-post test. Sampel penelitian ini sebanyak 26 murid, menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Variabel independen dalam penelitian ini adalah terapi bermain asosiative play menggunakan bola dan variabel dependen dalam penelitian ini adalah perkembangan perilaku social anak. Data dikumpulkan dengan lembar observasi perilaku sosial anak pra-sekolah. Hasil penelitian secara statistik terbukti ada pengaruh terapi bermain Assosiate Play menggunakan bola terhadap perkembangan sosial pada anak usia pra-sekolah (p=0.001). Salah satu manfaat bermain terapi adalah mengembangkan perilaku sosial anak karena anak akan belajar berinteraksi, dan menyesuaikan diri dengan lingkungan. Diharapkan lembaga pendidikan khusus TK Aisyiyah dapat menerapkan bermain terapi terutama Assosiative Play untuk perkembangan social anak usia pra-sekolah.Kata kunci: Assosiative play, terapi bermain, perilaku sosial, anak usia pra-sekolahABSTRACTPlaying at the child will develop a wide range of capabilities and the child would learn to adapt with the environment. Social behavior is one indicator to assess how far optimal growth in children. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Assosiate using ball play therapy in social development in pre-school age children in Aisyiyah kindergarten of Prajurit Kulon Mojokerto. This study uses an analytical approach correlation with pre-experimental design of one group pre-post test. Samples of this study were 26 students, using purposive sampling technique. The independent variable in this study was the asosiative using ball play therapy and the dependent variable in this research was the development of the social behavior of children. Data were  collected with social behavior observation sheet. The results proved statistically there was an effect of  Assosiative using ball play therapy in social development in pre-school age children in Aisyiyah kindergarten of Prajurit Kulon Mojokerto (p=0.01). One of the benefits of play therapy is to develop the social behavior of the child because the child will learn to interact and adapt to the environment. The age- and role-related growth of young school-age children is made possible by psychophysiological processes, among them gender role behaviour. Our research makes it possible to define the correlative link between creativity and lateralisation, which affects the motivation of boys and girls differently. Art therapy with girls showed a very strong prediliction towards independence and risk-taking against a background of middling self-sufficiency. Work with boys demonstrated a negative tendency for dependence on the opinions of others against a background of heightened hopes of success. Participants reacted strongly to the requirement to display the results of their creative art therapy work, and were generally apprehensive of the reaction of others to, and the social validation of, what they had done. This research shows the need to either segregate boys and girls into different groups or set separate tasks for each sex, thus reducing competition. The former experience positive changes in the strength and lability of the nervous system, as well as improved sensitivity.
