ObjectivesTo assess and compare the subjective rating of quality of life (QOL) in psychiatric patients who attended two psychiatric outpatient clinics in Baghdad city [Al-Rashad psychiatric teaching hospital and Baghdad teaching hospital]. In addition, it also aims at studying the effect of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics on the patients’ life qualities.MethodA sample of one hundred patients divided equally into two groups (fifty patient) from each hospital were interviewed and diagnosed in accordance with the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, for the period (from the 1st of March to the 1st of September 2011). The Arabic modified version of WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire (modified by WHO) was applied on each patient.ResultsData gathered from completed hundred forms showed that 50% of patients from Baghdad teaching hospital responded and scored (fair, acceptable) to describe their satisfaction in overall QOL, while (38%) of patients from Al-Rashad teaching mental hospital scored (bad) and (16%) scored (very bad). There was no significant difference in the four domains of QOL between the two studied groups. The findings were discussed accordingly.ConclusionsThis study showed that although the overall satisfaction of the patients’ life quality was higher in patients from Baghdad teaching hospital than those of Al-Rashad teaching mental hospital, a non-significant difference in the four domains between the two hospitals was found. The socio-demographic and clinical characteristics were not significantly correlated to the QOL domains except for the educational level, which was significantly correlated, with the physical health domain in patients from Al-Rashad teaching mental hospital.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of gender on recovery after cerebral stroke. It is believed that functional outcome of cerebral stroke (CS) depends on gender. Female gender is mildly negative prognostic factor in after stroke results. Two hundred and two patients who had first ischemic cerebral stroke were questioned with help of, HADS and WHOQOL-Bref questionnaires, looking for differences in recovery depending on gender. Average patients' age was 72+/-13 (ME+/-IR) years. The youngest patient had 40 years, and the oldest 92 years, and medium range was 52 years. There were 112 males and 90 females. Quality of life was equally graded by both male and female after CS (p=0.208). Male patients had significantly better results in physical (p=0.035) and psychological (p=0.020) domain of life quality. After CS, male patients had better results only in memory dimension (p=0.003). Anxiety was statistically more frequent among female patients (p=0.009). Gender did not influence frequency of metabolic syndrome in patients with CS. Quality of life after CS was better in male patients, and statistically significant difference has been shown in physical, psychological domain and memory dimension. Female patients were more anxious then male after CS.

Abstract Background Psychiatric patients who live in psychiatric residential care homes may often feel a loss of autonomy, decision making, and participation in social activities. They usually have few or no visitors and also do not have any purpose for living. Animals may increase the happiness and quality of life of psychiatric patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) on happiness and quality of life of chronic psychiatric patients living in psychiatric residential care homes in Tehran, Iran. Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted with 70 males with a chronic psychiatric disorder who were living in psychiatric residential care homes in Tehran, Iran, in 2016. The patients were randomly selected and divided into animal therapy intervention group and control group. Patients in the intervention group received animal-therapy with a bird for eight weeks. Patients in the control group received no intervention. The Oxford Happiness Inventory evaluated all patients pre and post-intervention. To evaluate life quality, the Wisconsin Quality of Life Index was used. Data were statically analyzed using SPSS Ver.19.0. ANCOVA with pretest statistical control. The significance level was set as p < 0.05. Results The mean age in both control and intervention groups were 47.12 and 45.82 years, and the mean age of illness onset for both control and intervention groups was 18.94 and 16.83 years, respectively. The result of this study showed that happiness in the intervention group had significantly increased (p < 0.001). The results also showed that the quality of life in four sub-domains increased significantly. Conclusion To bring happiness to chronic psychiatric patients living in psychiatric residential care homes is essential and may result in returning them to society and healthy life. The results of this study showed that AAT was helpful for chronic psychiatric patients living in psychiatric residential care homes and not only made them happy but also increased their quality of life. IntroductionIntramuscular paliperidone palmitate (PP) is a long-acting, atypical anti-psychotic for once monthly intramuscular (IM) administration in the treatment of patients with schizophrenia.ObjectiveTo study the effectiveness (efficacy and quality of life) of ARP in the maintenance treatment of schizoaffective disorder.MethodsA non-randomized, prospective naturalistic study was performed in out-patients with schizoaffective disorder unsuccessfully treated with oral anti-psychotics. Efficacy of ARP over time was evaluated by using brief psychiatric rating scale (BPRS 24-items), quality of life was evaluated by using QL-Index, both at T0 and at most recent visit (T1). Data were analyzed with Student's t-tests and Pearson correlations (α value, two tailed). Paired t-test was applied for BPRS and for Ql-Index total scores (T0–T1).ResultsData were available for 8 outpatients consecutively prescribed ARP and naturalistically treated attending at the psychiatric clinic, university of Sassari. Mean time on ARP treatment was 207.14 days (sd 137.2). BPRS mean total score at T0 was 57 (sd 13.2) and at T1 was 39.7 (sd 10.8). QL-Index mean total score was at T0 5.43 (sd 1.6) and at T1 7.14 (sd 2.7). Paired sample test showed a statistically significant difference in decreasing symptoms at BPRS over time (P = 0.001) and QL-Index total score (P = 0.023). The analyses showed a significant improving at the following BPRS sub-items: anxiety (P = 0.005), mood elevation (P = 0.014) conceptual disorganization (P = 0.048), emotional withdrawal (P = 0.05), tension (P = 0.02) and distractibility (P = 0.03).Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The purpose of this article was to shower light on the quality of life that mostly we expect. Life quality is determined by two aspects i.e., physiological and psychological aspects. While if a person is addicted by the drugs, then the both aspects of his/ her life is deteriorated to the extreme. Due to drug addiction, the negative psychological effects which arises are anxiety, stress, depression, and familial relationships while the negative physiological effects that arise from the drug addiction are weakness, headache, dizziness, and pain in the body, etc. The main objective was to evaluate the quality of life of Diamorphine addicts, behavioral stimulation and inhibition, perceived social competence, and the relationship between these variables; and check differences between drug addicts on these variables based on their belongingness to joint and nuclear family systems. To achieve the objectives, 10 Diamorphine addicts were taken from Azm Drug Rehabilitation center, Sargodha, through purposive sampling. A total number of 10 participants responded to the 26-items quality of life survey (WHO-QOL-BREF), 24-items BAS/BIS (BIS/BAS scale) questionnaire, and 5-items perceived social competence questionnaire (Perceived Social Competence Scale II). Results were analyzed via SPSS version 20. The results showed that all three variables in the study were not associated with each other. Quality of life and social competence correlated -.25 (p = n.s); quality of life and BAS/BIS had .30 (p = n.s); while social competence and BAS/BIS had -.16 (p = n.s). It may be due to the cultural settings of Pakistan. In drug addicts, BAS has high activity, and BIS has low activity. And there is no significant difference in these variables among addicts of the nuclear and joint family system.

Introductionschizoaffective disorder is a nosographic entity characterized by a combination of symptoms of schizophrenia with mood episodes. The fact that its diagnosis is difficult, and often oscillates between schizophrenia and bipolar disorder raises the problem of its care and the outcome of patients who suffers from it.ObjectiveTo evaluate the quality of life of treated patients with schizoaffective disorder.Materials and methodsThis is a cross-sectional study realized at the psychiatric consultation of Mahdia hospital during a 6month period. Data were collected from patients and from their medical records using a predefined questionnaire.ResultsA total of 52 patients were included, the average age was 38 years. The majority of patients (63.5%) were unemployed. The use of psychoactive substances was noted in 63.5% of patients. Multiple linear regression analysis allowed us to find that 12 factors were more significantly associated with impaired quality of life which were, in descending order of importance: the EAS score > 39, the EGF score ≤ 70, the null or partial adherence, the presence of side effects seriously affecting daily activity, the depressive subtype, the lack of employment, the socio-economic level, the lack of stable budgetary resources, an age > 60years, the widowed and divorced marital status, the PANSS score (≥ 45) and negative symptomatology (PANSS).ConclusionThe diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder has a triple relevance: clinical, prognostic and therapeutic. Identifying a schizoaffective disorder and the risk factors that may affect the quality of life provides a significant practical impact for the patient's benefit.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
