Low temperature during germination hinders germination speed and early seedling development. Zn seed priming is a useful and cost-effective tool to improve germination rate and resistance to low temperature stress during germination and early seedling development. Spinach was tested to improve germination and seedling development with Zn seed priming under low temperature stress conditions. Zn priming increased seed Zn concentration up to 48 times. The multispectral imaging technique with VideometerLab was used as a non-destructive method to differentiate unprimed, water- and Zn-primed spinach seeds successfully. Localization of Zn in the seeds was studied using the 1,5-diphenyl thiocarbazone (DTZ) dying technique. Active translocation of primed Zn in the roots of young seedlings was detected with laser confocal microscopy. Zn priming of spinach seeds at 6 mM Zn showed a significant increase in germination rate and total germination under low temperature at 8 °C.

SnO2 nanoparticles are regarded as attractive, functional materials because of their versatile applications. SnO2 nanoaggregates with single-nanometer-scale lumpy surfaces provide opportunities to enhance hetero-material interfacial areas, leading to the performance improvement of materials and devices. For the first time, we demonstrate that SnO2 nanoaggregates with oxygen vacancies can be produced by a simple, low-temperature sol-gel approach combined with freeze-drying. We characterize the initiation of the low-temperature crystal growth of the obtained SnO2 nanoaggregates using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results indicate that Sn (II) hydroxide precursors are converted into submicrometer-scale nanoaggregates consisting of uniform SnO2 spherical nanocrystals (2~5 nm in size). As the sol-gel reaction time increases, further crystallization is observed through the neighboring particles in a confined part of the aggregates, while the specific surface areas of the SnO2 samples increase concomitantly. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements suggest that Sn (II) ions exist in the SnO2 samples when the reactions are stopped after a short time or when a relatively high concentration of Sn (II) is involved in the corresponding sol-gel reactions. Understanding this low-temperature growth of 3D SnO2 will provide new avenues for developing and producing high-performance, photofunctional nanomaterials via a cost-effective and scalable method.

A simple and rapid microwave-assisted combustion method was developed to synthesize homogenous carbon nanostructures (HCNS). This research presents a new and novel nanocomposite structures for removal of methylene red (2-(4- Dimethylaminophenylazo)benzoic acid), methylene orange (4-[4-(Dimethylamino)phenylazo]benzenesulfonic acid sodium salt) and methylene blue (3,7-bis(Dimethylamino)phenazathionium chloride)with semi degradation-adsorption solid phase extraction (SDA-SPE) procedure before determination by UV-VIS spectroscopy. A covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with high purity were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that the self-assembled carbon nanostructures (COFs) synthesized with the cost-effective method which was used as a novel adsorbent for adsorption of dyes after semi-degradation of methylene red, orange and blue (1-5 mg L-1) as an organic dye by titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticales in presence of UV radiation. Based on results, the COFs/TiO2 has good agreement with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with favorite coefficient of determination (R2= 0.9989). The recovery of dye removal based on semi-degradation/adsorption of COFs/TiO2 and adsorption of COFs were obtained 98.7% and 48.3%, respectively (RSD less than 5%). The method was validated by spiking dye to real samples.

AbstractThermally driven water-based sorption refrigeration is considered a promising strategy to realize near-zero-carbon cooling applications by addressing the urgent global climate challenge caused by conventional chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerants. However, developing cost-effective and high-performance water-sorption porous materials driven by low-temperature thermal energy is still a significant challenge. Here, we propose a zeolite-like aluminophosphate with SFO topology (EMM-8) for water-sorption-driven refrigeration. The EMM-8 is characterized by 12-membered ring channels with large accessible pore volume and exhibits high water uptake of 0.28 g·g−1 at P/P0 = 0.2, low-temperature regeneration of 65 °C, fast adsorption kinetics, remarkable hydrothermal stability, and scalable fabrication. Importantly, the water-sorption-based chiller with EMM-8 shows the potential of achieving a record coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.85 at an ultralow-driven temperature of 63 °C. The working performance makes EMM-8 a practical alternative to realize high-efficient ultra-low-temperature-driven refrigeration.

Characterization of Silicate sensors using Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM) is presented. These silicate sensors are based on three primary materials: Li2SiO3, K2SiO3, and CaSiO3. Silicate powders were transform into adequate inks that were added to a Low Temperature Cofire Ceramic (LTCC) substrates with thick film technology using screen printing which continues to offer innovative and cost effective solutions to the increasing demands for higher circuit densities. These silicate sensors are low power-high temperature heated ceramic sensors to detect halogen gases. Every sensor responded to the gas showing stability and reproducibility. Phase diagrams for these silicates were used to produce different combinations. The use of the eutectoid point in the phase diagrams was critical to reduce the operating temperature. Testing and characterization of these silicate sensors is presented. The impact of various parameters (e.g. materials design, structure, properties, performance and processing) for the sensors including their relationships for electronic packaging was reviewed and it was found critical to determine the microelectronics packaging reliability and integrity. The fundamentals of the sensor behavior including the sensitivity as well as response and recovery times were also determined.
