Stratified, imbibed Douglas fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii (Mirb.) Franco) seeds were exposed to 100% ethylene for times between 0 and 366 h. Germination rate and germination percentage were increased by treatments up to 48 h. The 12-h treatment gave largest stimulation; 30% enhancement of final germination percentage over control. Treatment for 96 h caused increased germination rate for the first 5 days but reduced the germination percentage. Germinants were subject to continuous exposure to atmospheres containing 0.1 – 200 000 ppm ethylene in air, but it did not stimulate growth, and the gas was inhibitory above 100 ppm. Although some effects of high concentrations of ethylene may have been due to the lowering of oxygen supplies, this alone was insufficient to account for the full inhibitory effect. The mechanism of stimulation by short-term exposure to ethylene is discussed.

Abstract1. The method of dual quantification was used to study the effect of courtship of both receptive and non-receptive females on the subsequent behaviour of the male Mormoniella vitripennis. 2. The male's responsiveness to successive non-receptive females waned when the time between presentations was short. The extent of this waning was less with longer time intervals. 3. When many females were presented to a male one after another the male courted almost all of them if they were receptive females but only a few if they were non-receptive females. 4. A single courtship of either a receptive or a non-receptive female had a similar effect on the male's subsequent behaviour and recovery occurred in a similar way. 5. Courtship of 20 non-receptive females reduced the male's response to further females more than did courtship of 20 receptive females. 6. The significance of these observations is discussed with reference to the use of dummy animals and to the recent ethological concepts of reaction specific energy, motivational impulses, specific action potentiality and consummatory act. 7. An endogenous central nervous influence on the male's readiness to respond is postulated. Courtship has a short-term response-specific effect (receptive or non-receptive females) and an inhibitory stimulus-specific effect (non-receptive females). With receptive females the inhibitory effect is absent and/or mating has an excitatory effect. The stimuli provided by a receptive female must direct nervous activity rather than release a limited amount of stored energy.

Kata kunci: povidone iodine, ekstrak daun sirih, Candida albicansAbstract Candida albicans (C. albicans) is one of the frequent causes of  reproductive health problems in women, namely vaginal discharge (fluor albus). The antiseptic solution, povidone iodine, is still an option to overcome vaginal discharge. The use of natural materials such as betel (Piper betle L.) leaves extract also become a popular choice as adouche for women. The objective of this study was to compare the inhibitory activity of povidone iodine solution and betel leaf extract against the growth of C. albicans in vitro. We used five different isolates of C. albicans with distilled water as control. Each isolate was treated with povidone iodine solution, betel leaf extract at concentration of 5%, 10%,and 20%. The results showed that povidone iodine had inhibitory effect on C. albicans. Betel leaf extract at concentration of 5% and 10% did not have inhibitory effectwhile betel leaf extract at concentration of 20% hadinhibitory effect on C. albicans. Analysis by ANOVA followed by Post-hoc tests showed a significant difference in inhibitory activity of povidone iodine and betel leaf extract at 20% concentration compared to control (p < 0,05). Povidone iodine solution showed twice as much as inhibitory effect on C. albicans compared to betel leaf extract (20% concentration). It is concluded that povidone iodine solution and betel leaf extract at 20% concentration can inhibit the growth of C. albicans in vitro. Keywords: povidone iodine, betel leaf extract, Candida albicans

Abstract According to the structural characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid,SARS-CoV-2 genomes were virtually segmented. After comparing with human genome,44707 SARS-CoV-2 genomes and 26 primates' genomes, 19 antisense oligonucleotides sequences were selected.Experimental results show that the combined inhibitory effect reaches 100% . Significance statement:Currently, effective methods of controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2 are very limited, only physical isolation and vaccination.Although physical isolation can achieve some short-term results, but can not fundamentally solve the problem of epidemic spread. The time between the development of a vaccine and its actual use is very long.It often happens that the vaccine is developed successfully, but the epidemic situation is beyond control. If a mutant strain emerges, it will take longer.I hope that the rapid screening technology of SARS-CoV-2 antisense oligonucleotides will light up new hope for the future of mankind and contribute oriental wisdom to the world.

We investigated the effects of an intellectual task on posthyperventilation (PHV) breathing by using a video game. Eight normal subjects were placed in a supine positions. The game task by itself led to increase ventilation compared with the control tasks via an increase in the average inspiratory flow rate (P < 0.01) and the respiratory frequency (P < 0.001). After hypocapnic voluntary hyperventilation (VHV), the task led to a decrease in the 1-min PHV breathing level compared with the control tasks after VHV [after VHV, first 60 s average minute ventilation while watching television and while playing a video game are 5.54 +/- 2.91 (SD) and 2.05 +/- 1.40 l/min, respectively; P < 0.01]. Only one subject showed PHV apnea for at least 10 s during the control protocol, whereas seven of the same eight subjects showed PHV apnea while performing the task. After isocapnic VHV, the task still led to a decrease in PHV breathing compared with the control tasks. However, this decrease was smaller than in the hypocapnic studies and was only significant during the first 15 s of recovery. These results suggest that increased activity in the higher centers of the central nervous system has an inhibitory effect on PHV breathing at a time when the effects of short-term potentiation after VHV, hypocapnia, and perhaps other mechanisms would be expected to be acting on breathing.

Abstract Background and Aims Previous studies have shown increases in ambulatory short-term blood pressure (BP) variability to be related to cardiovascular disease. In this study, we examined whether an angiotensin II type 1 receptor blocker losartan would improve ambulatory short-term BP variability in hypertensive patients on hemodialysis. Method 40 hypertensive patients on hemodialysis therapy were randomly assigned to the losartan treatment group (n=20) or the control treatment group (n=20). At baseline and 6 and 12 months after the treatment, 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring was performed. Echocardiography and measurements of brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and biochemical parameters were also performed before and after therapy. Results After 6- and 12-months of treatment, nighttime short-term BP variability, assessed on the basis of the coefficient of variation of ambulatory BP, was significantly decreased in the losartan group, but remained unchanged in the control group. Compared with the control group, losartan significantly decreased left ventricular mass index (LVMI), baPWV, and the plasma levels of brain natriuretic peptide and advanced glycation end products (AGE). Furthermore, multiple regression analysis showed significant correlations between changes in LVMI and changes in nighttime short-term BP variability, as well as between changes in LVMI and changes in the plasma levels of AGE. Conclusion These results suggest that losartan is beneficial for the suppression of pathological cardiovascular remodeling though its inhibitory effect on ambulatory short-term BP variability during nighttime.

2-Deoxy-d-glucose (2-DG) is a glucose analogue that has been proposed for cancer therapy due to its cytostatic properties. Its effect on the proliferation of smooth muscle cells and endothelial cells has not been fully clarified. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of 2-DG on the proliferation of porcine aortic endothelial cells (PAEC) and porcine smooth muscle cells (PSMC), to establish an overview of its dose-dependent inhibitory capacity and to examine whether the short-term incubation of cells with 2-DG has an impact on cell proliferation in culture. Our results showed a dose-dependent significant inhibitory effect on proliferation, which was more pronounced in PSMC than in PAEC. Even after short-term incubation of cells with 2-DG, relevant inhibition of proliferation was documented. The clinical application of 2-DG might be a promising concept by inhibiting cells that show a potentially rapid proliferation in response to non-malignant stimuli, such as smooth muscle cells after intracoronary stenting.

The effect of various anions on the short-term influx on NO3− into barley roots was examined by the use of 36ClO3− as a tracer for nitrate. NO3− (36ClO3−) influx was found to be extremely sensitive to inhibition by external Cl− (Ki = 0.035 mM). By contrast 36Cl− influx was not significantly affected by external NO3−. Other anions, SO42− and H2PO4−, had no effect on NO3− (36ClO3−) influx, while HPO42−exerted a slight inhibitory effect. In the range from pH 4 to pH 8 no significant effect of OH− concentration on NO3− (36CIO3−) influx was detected. When barley roots were pretreated for periods up to 4 h with 10 mM NO3−, there was a significant reduction in NO3− (36ClO3−) and 36Cl− influx. KCl at the same concentration (10 mM) caused similar reductions of NO3− (36ClO3−) and Cl− influx. When plants were pretreated with lower NO3− or Cl− concentrations (0.05–5.0 mM) for 2 days, Cl− influx was found to be more sensitive than NO3− (36ClO3−) influx to nitrate or chloride pretreatment.

The effect of 10-2-10-6 M Mn+2 on the growth and acidification of the incubation medium by <em>Zea mays</em> L. coleoptile segments was studied. It is shown that 10-5M manganese stimulated growth (in comparison to a control without Mn+2) while concentrations from 10-2 to 10-4M clearly inhibited it. It was also found that manganese at the studied concentration range significantly inhibited acidification of the incubation medium. Auxin, at a concentration of 10-5M, reversed the inhibitory effect of Mn+2 (with the exception of 10-2M) on the growth and acidification of the incubation medium by <em>Zea mays</em> L. coleoptile segments.
