Examining the factors of experiential learning and teaching style: A case study of a hospitality and tourism program

A pilot study was conducted to explore student preferences, performance, and perceptions of experiential learning assessment following experiential learning instruction. A learning experience, using semi-directed instruction and experiential learning methods, was given to 13 student volunteers who were then assessed using a case study, presentation, journal, and essay, representing both group and individual assessment. Student performance in terms of their understanding and their engagement was compared to student perceptions and preferences. Student performance indicated that although the journal (individual assessment) appeared to be the best venue for students to express their understanding, they were the least engaged in it. The case study and the presentation (group assessments) were most preferred overall and students also perceived these to be the best forms of assessment in a number of aspects (helpful, beneficial, engaging, challenging, etc.). It is possible that the collaborative nature of the group assessments matched the teaching style suggesting that the mode of assessment should follow a similar format to the learning experience in courses that use experiential learning methods. The essay, as a traditional form of assessment, was valued for its structure, possibly reflecting student familiarity with that type of assessment, but less so overall because it was also an individual exercise. Each assessment method used in the pilot demonstrated value, albeit in different forms and this finding speaks to assessing both authentically and using a mixture of methods. Une étude pilote a été réalisée afin d’explorer les préférences, la performance et les perceptions des étudiants concernant l’évaluation de l’apprentissage par l’expérience à la suite d’un enseignement par l’expérience. Une expérience d’apprentissage, faisant appel à un enseignement semi-dirigé et à des méthodes d’apprentissage par l’expérience, a été offerte à 13 étudiants bénévoles qui ont ensuite été évalués par le biais d’une étude de cas, d’une présentation, d’un journal et d’un essai, représentant à la fois l’évaluation de groupe et l’évaluation individuelle. La performance des étudiants en ce qui concerne leur compréhension et leur participation a été comparée à leurs perceptions et à leurs préférences. La performance des étudiants indique que bien que le journal (évaluation individuelle) semble être le meilleur moyen pour les étudiants d’exprimer leur compréhension, c’est ce qui les faisaient participer le moins. L’étude de cas et les présentations (évaluation de groupe) étaient ce que les étudiants avaient en général préféré et que les étudiants considéraient comme les meilleurs formes d’évaluation, et ce pour plusieurs raisons (utile, bénéfique, engageant, stimulant, etc.). Il est possible que la nature collaboratrice des évaluations de groupe corresponde au style d’enseignement, ce qui suggère que le moyen employé pour l’évaluation devrait suivre un format semblable à l’expérience d’apprentissage dans les cours où l’on emploie des méthodes d’enseignement par l’expérience. L’essai en tant que forme traditionnelle d’évaluation a été apprécié pour sa structure et parce qu’il pouvait refléter la familiarité des étudiants avec ce type d’évaluation, mais il a été moins apprécié en général du fait qu’il s’agissait d’un exercice individuel. Chaque méthode d’évaluation employée dans cette étude pilote a présenté une certaine valeur, bien que sous différentes formes, et ces résultats indiquent qu’il est utile d’évaluer à la fois de façon authentique et par un mélange de méthodes.

This qualitative case study carried out at a Turkish university with four English language teachers aims to explore what teachers experience in the planning, implementation, analysis, and reporting phases of the lessons study process and what the implications of lesson study for teacher professional development can be. Data in this four-month study were gathered through observations, interviews, whole group discussions, and reflective reports. Findings revealed that lesson study had potential challenges and benefits for the professional development of teachers. The model poses challenges in finding a topic and research question, determining the lesson design and teaching style, making student thinking observable and analyzing qualitative data. On the other hand, it benefited teachers in terms of increasing their pedagogical content knowledge, reflectivity, research skills, collaboration, and collegiality. This study suggests that lesson study might be a good starting point for institutions wishing to adopt a more teacher-led, inquiry-driven and collaborative perspective for professional development.

Research Problem. This article examines the practice and shows the theory and outcome of the study of whether there is a significant relationship of students' academic performance depending on their learning and teaching style, whether there is a significant difference in students' grades depending on their teachers' teaching styles, and whether there is a significant difference between students' academic performance. The purpose of the study focuses on gaining new knowledge about the relationship between the learning and teaching style of a university instructor and student's academic performance. The methodology, methods, and techniques of the study. This study used the Grasch-Richman Learning Styles Questionnaire, which includes tools to assess both learning styles and teaching styles. Our study was designed as a survey study (suitable for determining the existing situation without intervention) and used a quantitative research methodology. The study also used a teaching style inventory method. Results. The results of the study showed that student achievement scores did not change significantly based on their teaching styles; a significant difference was found between student achievement and the correspondence between faculty teaching style and student teaching style. Scientific novelty/practical significance. The new knowledge gained allows us to consider the implications of how emerging learning opportunities relate to student preparation in higher education and teacher level support. Conclusions and Recommendations. The results of our study confirm that learning, teaching styles, and student achievement are interrelated, but in examining these three variables, other variables such as the specific difficulties encountered in teaching a particular subject, the age group of students, and the context of the school must also be considered. There is no "bad" style of qualified teaching. It should not, however, interfere with a teacher's professional development. New knowledge about teaching/learning styles can be useful for beginning university teachers as well as for their students.

Competent graduates are a critical input in enhancing the university’s role in agricultural transformation. How graduates play their role in contributing to development mirrors on how they trained. Low quality graduates are believed to be a product of a more subject-centered and instructive style of teaching. The Makerere University Kampala School of Agricultural Sciences (SAS) made effort to improve and enhance the competence of its lecturers to use a learner centered teaching approach in its programmes through training. This paper presents an assessment of how the training influenced the lecturers to use different teaching practices toward producing quality responsive graduates. Data was collected from 120 students and 20 lectures from the SAS using a semi-structured questionnaire. The findings show that Training lecturers in experiential learning influenced their awareness and use of experiential learning approaches in delivery of the courses they taught. Effective application of experiential learning approaches was constrained by challenges of varied understanding and appreciation of the concept among lecturers, short class periods, large class sizes and financial limitations. In effect, the traditional lecture method remained dominant. Above all, application of experiential learning approaches is not institutionalized at SAS thus limiting the attainment of critical and reflective thinking for the attainment of lifelong learning abilities among students. To strengthen application of experiential learning approaches, training of all lecturers and curriculum review to integrate experiential learning practices as part of the general teaching quality assurance measures is critical.

Brumfit (1979) has suggested that many commercially published ELT materials are little more than ‘masses of rubbish, skilfully marketed’. He perhaps rejects most of the published materials. However, in reality, it is observed that these ELT resources are the only available alternatives in the contexts where infra-structural limitations of language classrooms and the inefficiency of the language-teachers make the goal of language learning and teaching unreachable or unattainable for many of the learners. This paper, through a case study, aims at justifying the use of commercially published ELT coursebooks that are designed and used, considering the limitations and problems of the personally produced materials by untrained teachers. Nevertheless, these materials must consider the local market rather than the global markets so that they meet the needs of the local language learners and instructors. The case study implies that it is the selection or adaptation of the right materials for the specific learners that makes them effective or ineffective. It also suggests that the personally designed or locally produced materials too may make teaching and learning difficult and impossible sometimes.IIUC Studies Vol.10 & 11 December 2014: 173-182

PurposeThe airline industry has been severely impacted by COVID-19 due to widespread travel restrictions. Its current response is crucial to ensure continued operations after the global pandemic is resolved. One resource the airlines are leveraging is loyalty programs. This study aims to examine the viability of leveraging loyalty programs in times of crisis.Design/methodology/approachThis study employs a case study methodology to examine how one company, American Airlines, has used its loyalty program to survive a pandemic and alleviate the financial costs associated with limited and restricted travel.FindingsAmerican Airlines' AAdvantage loyalty program structure may be used as a benchmark to understand how airlines can anchor their loyalty base to reinvigorate travel interest and use these programs as safeguards in critical instances that may arise in the future.Research limitations/implicationsThe case was bound by the fact that the pandemic was still a threat during the time of analysis. The findings of this case study go beyond the airline industry and may inform other hospitality and tourism organizations on the benefits of loyalty programs in times of financial distress.Originality/valueThis is the first known case study examining the strengths and opportunities of the structure of the American Airlines' AAdvantage program as a means for surviving in a time of crisis. Moreover, understanding how to mitigate the long-term effects of crises may help to inform future short-term strategies of airlines and other hospitality and tourism organizations for navigating unexpected shocks to their ecosystem.

As out-of-field teachers existence led to change in teachers, this research aimed to explore their commitment to learning and teaching, and how their schools supported them. Five Indonesian teachers who started teaching as out-of-field teachers and their school leaders were interviewed for this research. The qualitative case study was employed to explore the problem through interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the initial commitment to teaching, learning, and growing is an investment for further actions throughout the teaching practice. The schools provide necessary assistance through the induction and during their in-service in the provided and requested professional learning, being trusted and acknowledged by school leaders, and having resourceful colleagues. From their schools’ support, the out-of-field teachers become more knowledgeable and remain as teachers for an extended time.
