The study was conducted to find out the suitability of making particleboard using nipa palm (Nypa fruticans) stem wood and rajkoroi (Albizia richardiana) wood chips. Particleboards were fabricated at six different ratios of nipa palm stem and rajkoroi wood chips such as 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, 10:90 and 0:100. Characteristics of particleboards such as modulus of rupture, internal bond strength, water absorption, thickness swelling and moisture content were measured. Results shows that particleboards made from 100% rajkoroi wood chips have the highest static bending properties and highest tensile strength properties of other particleboards but 100% nipa palm stem wood chips have the lowest static bending and lowest tensile strength properties of other particleboards. 10% nipa palm stem wood chips particleboard have the highest bending strength and tensile strength is better than 100% nipa palm stem wood chips and other mixing chips of particleboards. Mechanical, water resistance and dimensional stability properties were tested according to Indian standard specification. Tensile strength passed the British and German standard specification and nearest to Bureau of Indian Standard, bending strength was found nearest to Indian Standard but lower than German and British Standard specification. Strength property of rajkoroi wood chips particleboard is higher than nipa palm steam wood chips particleboard but dimensional stability is lower than nipa palm steam wood chips particleboard.

The objective of this research was to develop the process for the production of Nipa bowls from Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.) waste by using solar energy. Two types of solar dryer were investigated, (1) solar dryer cabinet (SDC) and (2) solar dryer cabinet coupled with heater (SDCH) and were compared to the traditional sun dryer (SD) method. The results demonstrated that the use of SDCH could reduce the humidity of the Nipa leaves to 15.23 ± 0.78% within 2 hours. This result was statistically significant at 95% confident compared to those results obtained from SDC (49.91 ± 0.78%) and SD (38.66 ± 0.21%). The dried leaves obtained from the three drying methods were tested for bacterial contamination. For SD, the maximum bacteria contamination was 95,000 ± 40,414 cfu/piece which was higher than SDC (480 ± 173 cfu/piece) and SDCH (463 ± 112 cfu/piece) methods. The SDC and SDCH techniques were implemented at Palian river basin community (Ban Na Yod Tong Nipa Palm Leaf Handicraft) in Wang Won Sub-District, Kantang District,Trang Province, Thailand. These techniques could enhance the drying process of Nipa leaves and thus increase the production of Nipa bowls 3.5 times reducing Nipa waste up to 1.83 tons. The villagers could produce approximately 183,000 bowls/year generating an income of more than 55,800 USD for 60 families.

Nipa palm sap (NPS) as source of medicine traditionally used to treat various diseases. This study identified good radical scavenging activity in NPS with the IC50 value of 33.36 μg/mL using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. NPS comprises of moisture (72.44%), ash (1.04%), protein (7.04%), carbohydrate (19.48%), fat (0%), and energy level (106 kcal). Glucose (0.3%) and fructose (1.8%) were detected using high-performance liquid chromatography. Maleic acid, cinnamic acid, chlorogenic acid, and kaempferol were the predominant compounds revealed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography. Overall, NPS has the potential antioxidants sources with significant health benefits and values for commercialisation.

Nipa palms, a plant species in mangrove forest, are valuable and beneficial for the local community’s economy as well as the conservation in the southern region of Thailand. This study aimed to investigate the use of nipa palms in Khanap Nak and focused on the type of products made from nipa palms and the yield of this plant through focus group discussion and interview with the farmers maintaining nipa palm forest. The results suggested that nipa palms in Khanap Nak can yield for 5–100 years. Apart from the benefits to the community in terms of sustainability, as it prevents erosion, it provides sources for the production of food (molasses, granulated sugar, syrup, and vinegar from sap) and raw materials (roofing material and cigarette paper from leaves and stem), which can generate income to community members. It was found that most of the communities earn 90–130 USD/day from palm sugar production. The quantity of nipa palm products varies in each season, resulting in different prices. In this regard, they can produce high quantity of products made from sap from January to March. However, the production of different types of sugar requires local knowledge and wisdom to ensure good quality. Nipa palm production is the sustainable way to utilize mangrove forest resources, leading to effective conservation and good life quality. Regarding problems and difficulties in farming, it was found that natural disaster is a major threat, such as drought, excessive amount of salt or freshwater in certain periods, and insect pests.

Nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.) widely recognized as one of the biological resources with various aspect of utilization. Nipa palm sap can be processed into bioethanol. Bioethanol also has a quite high selling price, especially for the fulfilment of energy and for fossil fuels substitution. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the economic value of nipa sap for further processed into bioethanol, in order to improve the income and job opportunity of coastal households. This research was conducted at Sungsang, South Sumatera with focusing on nipa palm sap further processing into bioethanol and its impact on increasing household income. This research was statistically testing the relationship between potential production of bioethanol, average revenue and labour recruitment. Based on the 2013 data, potential production of bioethanol was capable to contribute of nett income about IDR 507,940 to 3,503,280 ha-1 month-1 or IDR 6,095,274 to 42,039,360 ha-1 year-1. Therefore each hectare of nipa palm can generate labour recruitment up to 3.7 person ha-1. This assessment was expected to provide a better description of the importance of local biological resources utilization of the nipa palm, in order to improve community welfare and the efforts of biodiversity conservation on a local scale.
