Background: Alterations in microRNAs (miRNAs) are related to the occurrence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and play an important role in the molecular mechanism of NPC. Our previous studies show low expression of 14-3-3σ (SFN) is related to the metastasis and differentiation of NPC, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Methods: Through bioinformatics analysis, we find miR-597 is the preferred target miRNA of 14-3-3σ. The expression level of 14-3-3σ in NPC cell lines was detected by Western blotting. The expression of miR-597 in NPC cell lines was detected by qRT-PCR. We transfected miR-597 mimic, miR-597 inhibitor and 14-3-3σ siRNA into 6-10B cells and then verified the expression of 14-3-3σ and EMT related proteins, including E-cadherin, N-cadherin and Vimentin by western blotting. The changes of migration and invasion ability of NPC cell lines before and after transfected were determined by wound healing assay and Transwell assay. Results: miR-597 expression was upregulated in NPC cell lines and repaired in related NPC cell lines, which exhibit a potent tumor-forming effect. After inhibiting the miR-597 expression, its effect on NPC cell line was obviously decreased. Moreover, 14-3-3σ acts as a tumor suppressor gene and its expression in NPC cell lines is negatively correlated with miR-597. Here 14-3-3σ was identified as a downstream target gene of miR-597, and its downregulation by miR-597 drives epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and promotes the migration and invasion of NPC. Conclusion: Based on these findings, our study will provide theoretical and experimental evidences for molecular targeted therapy of NPC.

We focused on vibration characteristics of reciprocating compressors and constructed the mathematical model to calculate the natural frequencies and modes for crank angles and proposed a method to estimate the degree and the suspicious portion of failure by difference of temporal parameter values obtained using measuring data in operation and the mathematical model. In this paper, according to the proposed method, a case study is carried out using the field data, where the data were acquired before and after the failures occurred in the connecting parts of connecting rod, to prospect the difference between each parameter value for two operating states. Inspecting resonant characteristics each in the frequency response data relating to the natural frequencies for bending modes of the piston rod, we determined two resonant frequencies, which could correspond to the 1st and 2nd mode about bending of the piston rod. To equate the calculated each natural frequency from eigen value analysis based on the proposed model with each resonant frequency, we define the error function for the identified problem, namely optimum problem. In the identified results, it is found that some parameter values have much difference and the corresponding failure could occur around the connecting rod. We could show the possibility to detect both the change of the parameter values and the deterioration parts for two different kinds of the operating states by our proposed method.

ContextGlutamine is the main source of energy of the enterocyte and diarrhea and weight loss are frequent in HIV infected patients.ObjectiveTo determine the effect of alanyl-glutamine supplementation on intestinal permeability and absorption in these patients.MethodsRandomized double-blinded, placebo-controlled study using isonitrogenous doses of alanyl-glutamine (24 g/day) and placebo (glycine, 25 g/day) during 10 days. Before and after this nutritional supplementation lactulose and mannitol urinary excretion were determined by high performance liquid chromatography.ResultsForty six patients with HIV/AIDS, 36 of whom were male, with 37.28 ± 3 (mean ± standard error) years were enrolled. Twenty two and 24 subjects were treated with alanyl-glutamine and with glycine respectively. In nine patients among all in the study protocol that reported diarrhea in the 14 days preceding the beginning of the study, mannitol urinary excretion was significantly lower than patients who did not report this symptom [median (range): 10.51 (3.01–19.75) vs. 15.37 (3.93–46.73); P = 0.0281] and lactulose/mannitol ratio was significantly higher [median (range): 0.04 (0.00–2.89) vs. 0.02 (0.00–0.19); P = 0.0317]. There was also a significant increase in mannitol urinary excretion in the group treated with alanyl-glutamine [median (range): 14.38 (8.25–23.98) before vs 21.24 (6.27–32.99) after treatment; n = 14, P = 0.0382].ConclusionOur results suggest that the integrity and intestinal absorption are more intensely affected in patients with HIV/AIDS who recently have had diarrhea. Additionally, nutritional supplementation with alanyl-glutamine was associated with an improvement in intestinal absorption.

Abstract. The evolution of large amplitude internal waves propagating towards the shore and more specifically the run up phase over the "swash" zone is considered. The mathematical model describing the generation, interaction, and decaying of solitary internal waves of the second mode in the interlayer is proposed. The exact solution specifying the shape of solitary waves symmetric with respect to the unperturbed interface is constructed. It is shown that, taking into account the friction on interfaces in the mathematical model, it is possible to describe adequately the change in the phase and amplitude characteristics of two solitary waves moving towards each other before and after their interaction. It is demonstrated that propagation of large amplitude solitary internal waves of depression over a shelf could be simulated in laboratory experiments by internal symmetric solitary waves of the second mode.

AbstractThere is a paucity of studies investigating middle ear pressures (MEPs) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This paper prospectively examines MEPs in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma before and after radiotherapy and discusses their clinical significance. Newly diagnosed patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were studied before and at three to 12 months (mean 7.5 months) after radiotherapy. MEPs were measured by tympanometry. Thirty-three patients completed the study. The mean MEP before and after radiotherapy was −55.2 mm water(range −250 to 45 mm water) and −73.1 mm water (range −215 to 35 mm water) respectively. About two-thirds of assessable ears had an increase in negative MEPs after irradiation and the rest had less negative MEPs after irradiation. Those ears which developed post-irradiation middle ear effusions were found to have pre-irradiation negative middle ear pressures of at least −45 mm water. These findings provide possible explanations for some unexplained audiometric observations previously made in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma after radiotherapy. Tympanometry before radiotherapy may prove to be useful in identifying ears with a high risk of developing post-irradiation middle ear effusion.

Intersymbol Interference (ISI) problem is one of the main factors affecting the baseband transmission performance of mobile communication’s digital signal which can not only reduce the transmission quality of the information but also can result in misinformation and false pass of information and provide troubles to the user and communications. In order to minimize the error rate, we propose a new digital equalization filter and establish the basic model of the digital filter and introduce non-linear Kalman observation equation and the state equation into the model and design partial differential mathematical model of the Kalman filter and develop MATLAB solver based on the mathematical model. In order to verify the validity and reliability of Kalman filter algorithms and mathematical procedures designed in this paper, it uses MATLAB toolbox to simulate the filter of mobile crosstalk signal and obtains amplitude-frequency characteristics and time-domain characteristics before and after filtering. By comparison, we can see that the filter can eliminate the high frequency crosstalk signal which provides technical reference for the study of the problem of crosstalk between the mobile communication codes.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychosocial distress and quality of life (QOL) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy. Fifty-three patients with an initial diagnosis of NPC were enrolled in this study. The psychological Distress Thermometer (DT) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Head & Neck (FACT-H&N) were conducted before and after radiotherapy in NPC patients. We compared the differences in psychological distress and QOL before and after radiotherapy and analyzed the correlation between psychological distress and QOL after radiotherapy. The performance on the DT was 6.60 ± 1.42 and 2.81 ± 1.43 before and after chemotherapy, respectively, with a significant difference between the time points (t = -13.73,P< 0.01). The performance on the FACT-H&N was 68.30 ± 6.14 and 39.84 ± 6.14 before and after chemotherapy, respectively, with a significant difference between the time points (t = -19.9,P< 0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between the DT score and the FACT-H&N score (r = -3.64,P< 0.01). Patients with NPC experience different degrees of psychological distress, an important factor that affects quality of life, after radiotherapy.

Abstract Purpose The study assessed the impact of intradialytic oral nutritional supplementation on the quality of life in patients receiving hemodialysis and diagnosed with protein energy wasting. Methods A pre-test post-test quasi-experimental study was conducted before and after 3 months of intradialytic oral nutritional supplementation on 109 older hemodialysis patients. We measured before and after 3 months of intradialytic oral nutritional supplementation, the quality of life score, the burden of kidney disease, three quality of life scales and the mental and physical health status using KDQoL-SF™ 1.3, body composition and biochemical parameters of nutritional condition. Results The mean age of the patients was 69.4 ± 3.4 years, 59% were male, and the time on dialysis was 63.5 ± 52.6 months. Comparing the baseline with month 3 of intradialytic oral nutritional supplementation, we observed to better quality of life. In contrast to malnutrition, score, specifically increased significantly score of symptoms/problems list related to hemodialysis, sexual function, social and cognitive function, sleep, pain, energy/fatigue and general state of health. Significant changes were also found in nutritional status, energy intake and body composition indicators. After 3 months of intradialytic oral nutritional supplementation, we observed a nutritional status recovery in one or more indicators in 92% of the patients. Conclusion Our findings indicate that 3 months of intradialysis oral nutritional supplementation improves the components of physical and mental quality of life and nutritional status in older patients receiving hemodialysis diagnosed with loss of protein energy. These results are relevant to improve the experience of patients with protein energy loss receiving hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a squamous cell malignancy derived from the nasopharyngeal epithelial layer. This study aimed to calculate the IL-6 levels in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma before and after radiotherapy, in the week I and week 3 during the radiotherapy, and 2 weeks after the radiotherapy.METHODS: The study was conducted in a prospective cohort on 16 people suffering from nasopharyngeal carcinoma and undergoing radiotherapy, i.e. 9 patients were in stage I of nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 7 people were in stage II of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Each sample underwent the examination of IL-6 before the week I and week 3 during the radiotherapy, and 2 weeks after the radio¬therapy.RESULTS: The more they received the treatment with radiotherapy the greater was the decrease of serum IL-6. The percentages of the decrease of the levels of serum IL-6 was greater in those receiving the 3-week duration of radiotherapy (24.59%) compared to those who just received 1-week duration of radiotherapy (6.44%). The decrease of serum IL-6 would continue, although radio-therapy had ended; 2 weeks after the radio-therapy, the percentage of serum IL-6 decreased to 42.43% from the level of serum IL-6 before the radio-therapy.CONCLUSIONS: The research results indicated that there happened a significant decrease of serum IL-6 (p<0.05) after the treatment with the radio-therapy
