Indonesian society utilizes biodiversity as source of medicinal herbs. Betel leaf and lime are included in traditional Indonesian medicinal plants that have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. One of the benefits of herbal medicinal plants of betel leaf and lime is that it can be used as a natural hand sanitizer. The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of naturally made hand sanitizer against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by the combination of green betel leaf extract and lime extract. The experiment was performed by the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Results showed that a combination of 50% betel leaf extract and 50% lime extract inhibited the growth of S. aureus whereas, 75% betel leaf extract and 100% lime extract exhibited strong inhibition than 70% alcohol.

Background: Numerous sequencing techniques have been progressed since the 1960s with the rapid development of molecular biology studies focusing on DNA and RNA. Methods: a great number of articles, book chapters, websites are reviewed, and the studies covering NGS history, technology and applications to cancer therapy are included in the present article. Results: High throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies offer many advantages over classical Sanger sequencing with decreasing cost per base and increasing sequencing efficiency. NGS technologies are combined with bioinformatics software to sequence genomes to be used in diagnostics, transcriptomics, epidemiologic and clinical trials in biomedical sciences. The NGS technology has also been successfully used in drug discovery for the treatment of different cancer types. Conclusion: This review focuses on current and potential applications of NGS in various stages of drug discovery process, from target identification through to personalized medicine.

Controversy in identification of medicinal plants has been a problem since ages. When we refer the classical text like Caraka Samhita, it becomes important to know the exact medicinal plant mentioned in the formulation or treatment. The controversy regarding a plant is found to be of two types mainly. Single classical plant having multiple botanical identities eg. Parpata, Rasna, Amlavetasa, Bharangi, Pasanabheda Botanically identified single plant with multiple classical identities eg. Bacopa monnieri, Clitoria ternatea The plants of this study fall under second category. The plants C.viscosa, Linn. and G.gynandra, Linn. are having multiple classical identities like Ajagandha, Tilaparni, Suvarcala, Brahmasuvarcala and Adityabhakta. An effort is made to resolve the controversy by comparing the information of these plants from classical Ayurvedic texts and Modern texts in this article.   Method: Compilation of all the data from Literature Comparision of classical data with viscosa and G.gynandra characteristics Conclusion is made on the basis of observations   Observation and Conclusion: Comparisons of all the above discussed classical plants with Cloeme viscosa, Linn. and Gynandropsis gynandra, Linn. shows Ajagandha being similar to Gynandropsis and Tilaparni being similar to Cleome.

Bacterial infections are in less-developed countries traditionally treated by remedies prepared from medicinal plants.Embelia schimperi(Vatke) is a plant used as a taenicide or disinfectant in Ethiopia, very often taken mixed with another plant species. In the present study, we examined two extracts prepared from seeds and twigs with leaves ofE. schimperiand its main present secondary metabolite embelin for their antibacterial combinatory effect with oxacillin and tetracycline against sensitive and resistantStaphylococcus aureusstrains. Minimum inhibitory concentrations were determined through the broth microdilution method, whereas the combinatory effect was evaluated through fractional inhibitory concentration sum (ΣFIC) indices. Results show many positive interactions and synergy occurring in embelin and oxacillin combinations against 4 out of 9 strains (ΣFIC 0.203–0.477) and for embelin and tetracycline combination against 3 out of 9 strains (ΣFIC 0.400–0.496). Moreover, the resistance to oxacillin has been overcome in 2 strains and to tetracycline in 3 strains. According to our knowledge, this is the first study showing antimicrobial combinatory effect ofE. schimperias well as of embelin. These findings can be used for the further research targeted on the development of new antistaphylococcal agents.
