Production feasibility of monosex nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus was studied in eight brackish water ponds, where tilapia fries with the average body weight (ABW) of 0.15 g were stocked at a density of 5/m2. Salinity of the ponds varied from 11 ppt to 14 ppt. Fishes was fed with floating feed containing 35% crude protein. After 105 days of culture, production of tilapia was 6334.20- 8099.50 kg/ha with an average mean of 7456.35 ± 589.60 kg/ha. This production was achieved when average body weight and survival of tilapia was 176.50 ± 18.44 g and 84.42 ± 7.23%, respectively. This growth and production tilapia was higher and very much comparable to the production of tilapia reported from freshwater bodies. The study indicates that tilapia can be grown as crop diversification in brackishwater ponds, where stocking of shrimp now become risky due to invasion of diseasesBangladesh J. To investigate the potential of extensive net cage culture for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings, an experiment was conducted in net cages suspended in a fertilized pond. Mixed-sex population of Nile tilapia with an average initial body weight of 0.065 g was used to stock in experimental cages. Four treatments; non added-substrate without supplemental feeding (NSNF), non added-substrate with supplemental feeding (NSAF), added-substrate without supplemental feeding (ASNF), and added-substrate with supplemental feeding (ASAF) were tested. The results indicated that addition of substrates which gave an additional submerged surface area of approximately equal to the total cage surface area did not show significant effect on the growth (p > 0.05). The fish gross yield obtained from non added-substrate cages without supplemental feeding was 1.22 kg/m3 for a 56-day period.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/on.v10i1.7752

Aim: The objective of the present study was to test the immunostimulating potential of marine macroalga, Caulerpa scalpelliformis, in terms of non-specific immune responses, gene expression, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). Materials and Methods: O. niloticus was injected intraperitoneally with three different doses of methanol extract of C. scalpelliformis (CSME) (2 mg/kg, 20 mg/kg, or 200 mg/kg body weight), or MacroGardTM (commercial immunostimulant, positive control, and 20 mg/kg body weight), or distilled water (untreated control). In one set of fish, 5 days post-injection, serum lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and antiprotease activities were assayed. 24 h after injection, gene expression was analyzed in a separate set of fish. To another set of fish, 1 week post-administration of the products, fish were challenged with lethal dose 50 (LD50) dose of a live virulent pathogen, Aeromonas hydrophila and subsequent resistance to it was noted in terms of cumulative percent mortality. Results: CSME increased serum lysozyme, myeloperoxidase, and antiprotease activities. There was an increase in the expression of lysozyme gene in the spleen of treated fish. Mid dose of CSME caused the minimum mortality of 10% (consequent relative percentage survival = 73) which is comparable to that of the positive control. Conclusion: CSME is considered to have the potential to be developed into an immunostimulant for finfish aquaculture.
