This chapter addresses the changes (finance, human resources management, supply chain management, and regulatory) that affect the growth, sustainability, and survival of SMMEs world. These challenges are common among SMMEs in every country. In order for SMMEs to achieve growth, sustainability, as well as survive in the competitive global market, SMMEs must deal with these challenges. This chapter also creates a conceptual model that addresses these challenges and provides solutions that can be used to improve SMME challenges. SMMEs from South Africa, Nigeria, and Ghana were also discussed.

The problem of food sufficiency is a basic human need so that the availability of food for the people of Surabaya City must always be guaranteed. Law Number 7 of 1996 concerning Food, mandates that the government and the community are responsible for realizing Food Security. The Government organizes the regulation, guidance, control and supervision of sufficient food availability, both in quantity and quality and safety and nutritious, evenly distributed and affordable by the purchasing power of the people. The rate of increase in food demand is faster than the rate of increase in production capacity. Surabaya as a city of trade and services does not have sufficient agricultural land so that the supply of strategic commodities highly depends on supplies from outside the region which cause vulnerability to supply availability and price instability. Based on the description above, intensive monitoring of food price volatility in several markets and food wholesalers in the city of Surabaya is needed in order to maintain supply stability and price stability. One alternative to overcome the problems as above is with the development of the Supply Chain Management logistics city. In the long run according to the results that will be obtained in this study, it is expected to increase the role of PD. Pasar Surya in maintaining supply availability and price stability.

The purpose of this research is to empirically examine the factors that influence effectiveness of supply chain management by investigating the role of the variables of the customer relationship management, human resource competence, and the organization’s internal control system. The research method used is explanatory research and the type of research is verification. The research instrument was tested through the validity and reliability of the data. Furthermore, inferential data analysis using SEM-PLS statistics. The results found that the factors that affect the effectiveness of supply chain management were customer relationship management, competence of human resources affects the effectiveness of supply chain management, and internal control system. The results are useful for providing and utilizing various forms and means of communication and for managing the customer relationship, developing human resources, and updating control systems continuously in public organizations.

PurposeThe present study aims to identify the most critical elements of resilience in the management of supply chains of Brazilian companies and, in the sequence, debate possible digital technologies mentioned by literature to enhance them.Design/methodology/approachTo identify the most critical elements, the information provided by qualified academics was used. Data analysis was performed through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, hierarchical cluster analysis and Fuzzy TOPSIS approach.FindingsComparatively, the results pointed out three elements of resilience as the most critical in managing supply chains. They are the decision-making (understood as the definitions from the layout of the chain’s operations network to the choice of warehouse locations, distribution centres and manufacturing facilities), human resources (understood as management for human resources development and knowledge management through training) and security (understood as issues related to information technology for data security). For each of them, bibliographic research was performed to identify technologies that enhance these elements of supply chain management resilience.Originality/valueThe results presented here can significantly contribute to the expansion of debates associated with resilience in managing supply chains of Brazilian companies and directing researchers in the area.

PurposeTo empirically study the direct and mediating relationships between blockchain technology adoption strategy (BCTAS), electronic supply chain management diffusion (eSCMD), entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and human resources information system (HRIS) in Egyptian banks. This paper aims to connect the dots and show the relationships linking these related constructs after the emergence of this breakthrough blockchain technology.Design/methodology/approachThe authors have undertaken a thematic review of relevant multidisciplinary business management literature and then developed a conceptual model. This model was examined through adopting a mixed-methods approach, through which 300 quantitative questionnaires were filled by information technology (IT) staff at 12 banks in Egypt utilising a snowball sample. Besides, 20 qualitative interviews were carried out with international and Egyptian blockchain experts for exploratory and explanatory purposes. The suggested hypotheses were tested using structural equation modelling.FindingsThe results revealed that EO affects positively and significantly BCTAS and HRIS. BCTAS affects positively and significantly both HRIS and eSCMD. Concerning the linkage between external/supply chain and internal/organisational information diffusion, HRIS has a positive and significant effect on eSCMD. The direct EO–eSCMD relationship is not supported. Yet, indirectly, BCTAS mediates significantly EO–eSCMD and EO–HRIS relationships. Further, HRIS mediates significantly the indirect BCTAS–eSCMD relationship.Practical implicationsThe findings of this research shed light on the benefits and challenges of adopting BCTAS within emerging markets in general and Egyptian banking in specific, which can support an effective and efficient decision-making process undertaken by strategic and functional banking managers with EO in similar emerging economies.Originality/valueConceptually and empirically, it is the first article that investigated direct and mediating EO–BCTAS–HRIS–eSCMD relationships in a promising banking industry of an emerging market. It solved an interdisciplinary research puzzle by piecing together the relevant contemporary literature on production, operations and SC management, entrepreneurship, HR management and strategic technology adoption.

In this chapter, a multi-disciplinary approach for creating sustainable competitive advantage is examined. This is the integration of human resources management and supply chain management. The primary aim is to come up with a solution to the research question of ‘how do organizations create sustainable competitive advantage by integrating human resources and supply chain management?' In order to put forth the solutions, the resource-based approach is employed. A detailed literature review is given on the integration of two business functions to create sustainable competitive advantage. This chapter contributes to the literature, first by laying out the importance of resource-based view in both human resources and supply chain management, second by examining how do these two functions unite in order to obtain sustainable competitive advantage, and lastly, by enriching the limited number of studies so far on the integration of human resources and supply chain management with the help of a literature review.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse professionals’ competencies in supply chain management (SCM) in the mid-sized supermarket sector in Brazil as a way of broadening the understanding of the importance and the use of competencies in business development. Design/methodology/approach The survey was conducted with 60 managers from 34 companies in the mid-sized supermarket sector in the metropolitan region of Natal, Brazil. The managers evaluated the importance and use of a set of 24 general and specific competencies related to SCM. The gaps between importance and use were identified and analysed. Findings The results showed that the level of use was below the level of importance for all competencies, and the general competencies somehow received more attention than specific competencies in the development and execution of SCM activities. Moreover, the overall average of the gaps between levels of use and importance calculated for the general competencies was less than the general average of the gaps calculated for the specific skills. Research limitations/implications The research was carried out with a sample of mid-sized supermarkets in a particular region. Therefore, it is recommended that the research be extended to other contexts and supermarket companies of other sizes. Practical implications The calculated gaps between managers’ expectations or attributed importance and the perceived levels of competence use in supermarket organisations revealed important lines of action for correcting the course in human resources policy. Originality/value The present paper elaborated on an opportunities matrix, gaps × importance, showing how managers can set priorities to fill competence gaps and improve the companies’ human resources. Besides, it compares levels of importance and uses for two groups of competencies, general and specific related to SCM.
