Abstract This paper studies the perception of regional variation in Russian among young Russian nonlinguists in Moscow, Perm, and Novosibirsk. I explore the labels used in 55 perceptual maps and categorize them in order to investigate the perceived character of regional variation among young Russians, including their explanations for regional variation. The data analysis shows that claims about regional variation are based on the informants’ assessments of variation in Russian, but also on assessments of domains that they perceive as related to regional variation: style and accent, as well as extralinguistic features such as geography and climate. Based on this analysis, I argue that the line between regional language variation and other variations can be conceived of as fuzzy.

This paper considers the issue of additional retirement security for farmers. On the basis of theoretical considerations and empirical data analysis, the hypothesis is that in the face of a low level of farmers' pensions, insured persons who would like to guarantee themselves a satisfactory replacement rate must use supplementary retirement security instruments. Studies conducted to test the main objective of the research, which was based on an analysis of current incomes, the level of retirement insurance premiums and pensions for different sized homesteads, confirmed the assumptions expressed in the main hypothesis. As an addition to the main objective of the research, the potential forms of supplementary retirement security and their characteristics were presented.

This chapter discusses how the Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model explains language variation. It sifts the various contributions of the components of the model for elements that are conducive to onomasiological and semasiological structural variation, to situational, social, and regional variation, and to individual differences. Not only the conventionalization processes of usualization and diffusion, but also the entrenchment process of routinization make a strong contribution to the emergence and change of variation on all levels. Numerous forces promote variation, e.g. economy, extravagance, solidarity, prestige, mobility, and language contact. The dynamic, changeable nature of variation is emphasized and the various sources of this malleability are identified. It is also highlighted that the existence of individual differences is one of the central predictions of the EC-Model.
