AbstractThe approach of functional integration has the potential to solve challenges regarding lightweight design and resource efficiency since the number of parts and therefore the weight and needed installation space can be reduced. One important step in developing integrative concepts is the pre-selection of suitable functions or components. Previous methods of pre-selection take various aspects into account. However, pre-selection based on these methods usually requires additional tables and forms, whose preparation and editing quickly becomes time-consuming. At the same time, most of the development engineers are working on CAD models. However, their use in the selection of suitable integration partners is not yet supported sufficiently. The development of more than 80 concepts on five different vehicles has shown that the consideration of geometric properties (position, orientation, size) is effective, as they can be identified with minimal analysis effort while working on CAD. In this paper a four-step procedure is presented how integration partners can be identified directly on the basis of CAD models. A following evaluation with development engineers in practice completes the research.

Laser Additive Manufacturing LAM has the potential to generate complex geometries. Through this weight reduction, functional integration and multi-variant production is possible. In combination with automation and innovative laser technology applicated in welding and cutting, this process can be used economically. With powderbed based laser additive manufacturing metal parts can be built up layer by layer. However selection of available metals is limited. In the project StaVari latest findings in material-, laser-, joining and automation technology are joint by qualified partners to meet modern automotive demands in mass production and medicine technology for small batch series.

With the advancements of 3D modeling software, the use of CAD in design has become a standard practice. In recent years development in computer hardware and improvements in user friendliness of the CAD software has allowed designers to quickly and easily modify the CAD models. This modification capability allows CAD to be an integral part of the design process. Due to the increase in global competition, companies have become increasingly interested in fast and efficient design processes. One way to achieve improved efficiency is through better collaboration among designers working in common or similar projects and disciplines. A large design problem often requires specialized knowledge from several fields. Collaboration among the designers from these fields will ensure efficient design. Interaction among the designers can prevent redesign of similar components/subsystems, which requires the ability to share their designs. With the increase of collaboration, designers can now get access to large databases of 3D CAD models. But the challenge lies in search capabilities to identify common models from a large database. These considerations suggest that in the near future a challenge in 3D CAD industry will be how to find models of similar components and products. This paper presents an approach and its implementation to measure the similarity among a number of CAD models. The approach is based on the extraction and organization of information from the CAD models, which is followed by the suitable selection of commonality index and calculation of the commonality among a set of CAD models. A set of Vacuum cleaners are modeled and then compared to demonstrate the application of the approach.

The selection of biomimetic prototypes mostly depends on the subjective observation of a designer. This research uses TRIZ to explore some inferential steps in bionic design of the heavy machine tool column. Conflict resolution theory of TRIZ is applied to describe improved and deteriorated parameters and a contradiction matrix is used to obtain recommended inventive principles. A reference table of solutions corresponding to the biological phenomenon and TRIZ solutions is formed to expedite retrieving the biomimetic object. Based on the table, herbaceous hollow stem is selected to imitate column structure. Four kinds of plant are chosen from the biological database. To select the best from four candidates, a bionic ideality evaluation index is proposed based on similarity analysis and ideality evaluation theory in TRIZ. Thus, the bionic effect can be described and compared quantitatively. Bionic configuration is then evolved concerning manufacturing requirements. Size optimization of stiffener thicknesses is implemented finally, and satisfactory results of the lightweight effect is obtained.

In this paper, we mainly seek conditions on which the geometric properties of subclasses of biholomorphic mappings remain unchanged under the perturbed Roper-Suffridge extension operators. Firstly we generalize the Roper-Suffridge operator on Bergman-Hartogs domains. Secondly, applying the analytical characteristics and growth results of subclasses of biholomorphic mappings, we conclude that the generalized Roper-Suffridge operators preserve the geometric properties of strong and almost spiral-like mappings of typeβand orderα,SΩ⁎(β,A,B)as well as almost spiral-like mappings of typeβand orderαunder different conditions on Bergman-Hartogs domains. Sequentially we obtain the conclusions on the unit ballBnand for some special cases. The conclusions include and promote some known results and provide new approaches to construct biholomorphic mappings which have special geometric characteristics in several complex variables.

This paper addresses the question of the definition of compounding from a terminological perspective. In terminology, concepts are defined by a selection of properties shared by prototypical cases. For scientific terminology, the selection is validated by the strength of the theories that can use the definition. It is shown that morphophonological criteria often adduced in the delimitation of compounding are not adequate in a universal definition. In order to come up with a better definition, a two-step procedure is proposed. In the first step, a universal definition is used to determine for constructions in a particular language whether they belong to compounding. In the second step, language-specific properties are used to identify instances of these constructions. A definition is proposed that takes a compound as a word with a binary, headed structure, a relation between the elements that is not determined by compounding and a non-head that is not introduced as an entity in the discourse. The use of this definition is illustrated with a number of constructions in different languages. It is shown that expressions commonly called exocentric and copulative compounds are generally not compounds in this definition, but that some expressions that have been labelled as such are in fact compounds. The two-step procedure demonstrated here for compounding can also be used for other linguistic terms.

This paper describes a method used to design the inlet section of a jet-engine test cell. Calculations, accomplished with the use of standard, tabulated flow formulas and coefficients which can be found in basic fluid-flow texts, are shown. The step-by-step procedure enables the reader to use the methods and formulas in this paper as a guide for solving similar problems. Selection of an optimum turning-vane configuration is described herein by the use of tufts of cotton in the air stream of the model. A table is included which compares the model data with actual full-scale construction at various stages.

System structure is important for analyzing wear of a system. In this paper, this aspect is considered at the component level and is modeled using digraph and matrix methods. Contributing wear factors and the degree of influence among these factors, which determine wear independence and wear process between mating components, are identified. This along with the wear measure of subsystems determines the system wear. The procedure develops wear functions for characterization and comparison of subsystems of different types. These are also useful for wear analysis and evaluation leading to an optimum selection of subsystems based on the wear. The procedure is also shown to be useful at the operating state of a system and subsystems. Step-by-step procedure for system wear evaluation is presented. Methodology is also demonstrated by an example.
