Partial milking of cattle in smallholder herds on the Accra Plains: some factors affecting daily partial milk yield and milk composition

AbstractDaily partial milk yield of Sanga cows in 13 smallholder agropastoralist herds at two locations on the Accra Plains was recorded through monthly sampling. Estimates of mean daily partial milk yield and milk composition were computed from 1266 observations. The unadjusted mean daily partial milk yield was 875 (s.e. 11) g. The composition of milk: total solids (TS), fat (F) and solid-not-fat (SNF) were 131 (s.e. 14), 41 (s.e. 11) and 90 (s.e. 7) g/kg respectively. Least squares estimate of mean daily partial milk yield were 808·2 and 462·4 g with average s.e. of 41·8 for wet and dry season respectively. The wet and dry season differences in daily partial milk yield, TS and F were highly significant (P < 0·01). Seasonal difference in SNF was not significant.Herd difference in partial milk yield, TS, F and SNF were highly significant (P < 0·02). There were no significant effects of location on daily partial milk yield and SNF, although location effects on F and TS were significant (P < 0·05). The highest milk yield was observed in cows in third lactation and the lowest in cows in seventh lactation (P < 0·01). Daily partial milk yield peaked in the 3rd month of lactation. On average, lactation length was 210 to 240 days. Both linear and quadratic effects of stage of lactation were highly significant (P < 0·01). Lactation curve parameters for partially milked cows were also estimated. The implications of the results for milk production in sub-Saharan Africa were discussed.

A total of 7492 test-day observations for mean contents of fat, protein, casein, serum protein and lactose and individual laboratory cheese yield (ILCY) were obtained, at approximately monthly intervals, from 1119 ewes belonging to eight Churra dairy flocks. The effect of various factors on these variables was examined and phenotypic correlations among all traits were estimated. Least squares analyses showed significant effects of flock test-date, stage of lactation, age of ewe, and number of lambs weaned on almost all variables. Protein content and composition were not affected by the number of lambs weaned. ILCY had an unadjusted mean (26·55 kg cheese/100 l milk) close to those reported for real cheese yield in dairy ewes and was affected similarly to the main milk components. Fat, protein, casein, and serum protein contents, and ILCY, showed a generally increasing trend as lactation progressed. These components reached a minimum at 1 month into lactation, when milk yield was highest, and increased for the remainder of the lactation. ILCY depended mainly on fat, protein and casein contents. Protein and casein contents were closely related and equally correlated with ILCY. An increase in somatic cell count (SCC) was associated with decreased milk yield and decreased lactose content.

The growth rate, milk yield, milk composition and reproductive efficiency ofJamunapari goats were studied under semi-intensive conditions. Animals were allowedto graze for 6-7 hours and concentrate (17% CP, 11 MJ/kg DM) at 400g/head/day wasoffered twice daily. No body measurement was different in male and female goats. Theudder was capacious but pendulous. Testis length, breadth and scrotal circumferencewere 17.3 ± 1.5, 11.5 ± 1.7 and 42.4 ± 2.0 cm, respectively. The mean body weight at birthand at 12 months was 1.6 and 21.4 kg, respectively. The average growth rates of male andfemale kids were 59.4 and 48.2g/day, respectively. The overall rate of weight gain washighest in second month and lowest in 11th month. Highest milk yield was in secondmonth and lowest in the fifth month after kidding. Lactation length was 135.4 ± 14.9 and143.9 ± 13.2 days for does suckling one and two kids, respectively. Milk intake to growthratio was 15.6 ± 0.2 and 12.5 ± 0.3 for the litter size of one and two, respectively. Highestmilk fat, lactose and solids not fat (SNF) were in the later stage of lactation, whereasprotein and minerals were similar throughout the lactation. The average age at firstoestrus, age at first pregnancy and age at first kidding were 354.8 ± 17.1, 395.4 ± 29.6 and548.6 ± 68.1 days, respectively. The average number of services per pregnancy was 1.4.The gestation length was 152.8 ± 17.6 days. The average body weight just after kiddingand placenta weight were 26.7 kg and 342.4g, respectively. The overall litter size was 1.8and 32.9, 58.2 and 8.9% of kidding produced single, twins and triplets, respectively. Sexratio was 53.3 male to 46.7% female. Average onset of post-partum oestrus was 51 andinterval from parturition to pregnancy 69.3 days. Production of Jamunapari goats wascomparable with that of the Bengal goats.(Bangl. vet. 2010. &lt;p&gt;In order to build resilient cities in face of climate change in Sub-Saharan Africa, much is to be done to understand the impact of rapid and uncontrolled urbanization on the local climate in the region. Recent efforts by Brousse et al. (2019, 2020) demonstrated that using generic urban parameter information &amp;#160;derived out of Local Climate Zones (LCZ&amp;#160;; Stewart and Oke, 2012) maps created through the World Urban Database and Access Portal Tool framework (Ching et al. 2018) may be used to model the impact of Sub-Saharan African cities on their local climate &amp;#8211; using the case of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. These studies showed that despite the characteristic data scarcity on urban typologies that is present in Sub-Saharan Africa, LCZ could be used as a solution for modelling and studying the urban climates in the region.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Yet these conclusions were only obtained through the use of the bulk-level urban canopy model TERRA_URB, embedded in the COSMO-CLM regional climate model. We therefore test the applicability of a more complex urban canopy models &amp;#8211; the Building Effect Parameterization coupled to the Building Energy Model (BEP-BEM) &amp;#8211; over the region. To do so, we focus on short periods with specific meteorological conditions during the dry season spanning from December 2017 to February 2018. These are obtained through a k-means clustering over hourly weather measurements given by the automatic weather station located at the Makerere University, in the city-center of Kampala. Wind direction and speed, 2-meter air temperature, incoming short-wave radiation, precipitation, daily temperature range, 2-meter air relative humidity and near-surface pressure are used to depict 5 weather typologies (ie. clusters) during the dry season. We chose to keep only periods with 5 consecutive days of one weather typology, which results in three 5-day periods of distinct typology. We then run the model for these periods and evaluate its outputs against the state-of-the-art simulation by Brousse et al. (2020) as well as in-situ and satellite observations for certain meteorological variables. After that, we show the effect of the recent urbanization on the local climate for each of those three periods and relate it to the variability in urban heat.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This study is the first to model a tropical African city at 1 km horizontal resolution using the BEP-BEM model embedded in WRF. The latter could have major implications as more complex urban canopy models coupled to building energy models could shed light on the impact of the built environment on the livability of indoor and outdoor environments in these cities. Furthermore, insights could indeed be gained on the contribution of air conditioning heat fluxes to outdoor temperatures and the energetic consumption needed to keep indoor environments at an optimal temperature. Additionally, by resolving the urban environment in three dimensions, BEP-BEM could help increase our understanding of how specific urban planning and architectural adaptation strategies (like green or cool roofs, roof top solar panel, new building materials, urban greening etc.) may increase the citizens&amp;#8217; thermal comfort and reduce negative health impacts under specific weather conditions.&lt;/p&gt;

Milking frequency is the main factor regulating milk yield and milk quality if feeding, welfare, health, and environmental conditions are adequate. Milk yield and composition are substantially influenced by breed, and consequently the breed has an impact on both factors at a different frequency of milking. Further, the size of cisternal compartment plays an important role in accommodating secreted milk between milkings. Thus, ewes with large cisterns (i.e. large cisternal area, high cisternal milk percentage, and delayed tight junction opening during milk stasis) adapt themselves better to longer milking intervals than ewes with a small cistern. The increase of milking frequency from two to three times a day can lead to an increase of milk yield in the range of 3 to 36%. On the other hand, the reduction of milking frequency from twice to once a day can decrease milk yield from 9 to 67%. Two milkings per week could be omitted with no negative effects on milk yield, milk composition, and somatic cell count in ewes with large cisterns. However, besides the breed and cistern storage capacity, the results in literature show that the effects of milking frequency on milk yield and milk composition can vary according to the stage of lactation, individual animal, production level, practice of stripping, and duration of changed frequency. The right use of different milking frequency strategies can result in increased milk yield or in significant savings in labour and time spent in the milking parlour with negligible or no negative effects on milk yield and composition.

The use of information communication technologies (ICT) especially the Internet by small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is on the increase in many regions of the world, including Africa. Nevertheless, empirical evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) regarding the factors that affect the adoption of e-business is scarce. In that regard, the main objective of this chapter is to fill the research gap with an exploratory study that is aimed at eliciting views from SMEs in Nigeria. This article made use of a theoretical framework encompassing organizational, external and technological contexts to deliberate the issue. A survey is conducted in three Nigerian cities and the findings of the study are presented. The implication of the study is discussed and future research directions also given.

AbstractThe extent and amount of heterogeneous phenotypic variance for milk yield in the Uruguayan Holstein population were evaluated and a simple method of accounting for heterogeneity was developed. Lactation records (159 169) collected between 1989 and 1998 by two recording schemes were used to form 8955 herd-year-season-parity-lactation length contemporary groups. A log-linear model was used to identify factors affecting heterogeneity of phenotypic variance. The model included effects of production level, contemporary group size, recording scheme, herd, season of calving, parity number, calving year period and length of lactation and accounted for 50% of the variation in log variances. Estimates from this model were used in a Bayesian manner, to obtain posterior mean estimates of within-contemporary-group variances, which were then used to standardize records to a baseline variance. Effects of the adjustment were assessed by comparing coefficients of variation before and after correction, by correlation and regression between mean and standard deviations, and by using Gini coefficients and Lorenz curves. The adjustment procedure reduced heteroscedasticity primarily by decreasing the frequency of low-variance contemporary groups. Lorenz curves and Gini coefficients indicated that the largest impact of the standardization procedure was related to the size of the contemporary group. Some differences in the effect of the correction were found between recording schemes. The method for adjusting records is simple and easy to adapt to current genetic evaluation procedures.

The most important factor in the success of HIV treatment is adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART).The challenge to adherence to ART is particularly serious in Sub-Saharan Africa as the high rates of HIV/AIDS lead to greater numbers of affected individuals. Although long-term good ART adherence has been observed in certain settings of public sectors the magnitude of this challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa remains large and there is evidence for high rates of patient’s poor adherence. Study aimed to assess the factors affecting adherence to pediatrics antiretroviral therapy (ART) among children in Mekelle hospital, Tigray, Ethiopia. A Hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted on 226 children on antiretroviral therapy from May 01 to 30/2014 at Mekelle hospital. Data was collected from care givers of children under 15 years old who are on ART. Of the 226 children under 15 years, 90.3 % reported complete adherence to antiretroviral therapy medications at the regular schedule over the past 7 days. Factors associated with adherence were having male care giver (AOR=2.10[1.01, 7.22]), age of the child (AOR=1.43[1.16, 3.98]) below 5 years and use of first line ART drugs (AOR=2.86[1.54, 3.67]). Over all the adherence of children on ART to their medication in this study is relatively higher as compared to others. However, complete adherence is expected in order to make the drugs effective. Different strategies have to be designed to improve the adherence level.

Abstract. Dambos, seasonally saturated wetlands, are widespread in headwater catchments in sub-Saharan Africa. It is widely believed that they play an important role in regional hydrology but, despite research conducted over the last 25 years, their hydrological functions remain poorly understood. To improve conceptualisation of hydrological flow paths and investigate the water balance of a small Zimbabwean catchment containing a single dambo, measurements of alkalinity and chloride in different water types within the catchment have been used as chemical markers. The temporal variation in alkalinity is consistent with the premise that all stream water, including the prolonged dry season recession, is derived predominantly from shallow sources. The proposition that dry season recession flows are maintained by water travelling at depth within the underlying saprolite is not substantiated. There is evidence that a low permeability clay lens, commonly present in many dambos, acts as a barrier for vertical water exchange. However, the highly heterogeneous chemical composition of different waters precludes quantitative hydrograph split-ting using end member mixing analysis. Calculation of the chloride mass-balance confirms that, after rainfall, evaporation is the largest component of the catchment water budget. The study provides improved understanding of the hydrological functioning of dambos. Such understanding is essential for the development and implementation of sustainable management strategies for this landform.

Twelve West African Dwarf sheep, comprising four ewes in each of the Parities 1, 2 and 3, were used to determine the effect of parity on udder traits during lactation, milk yield and composition. Udder length, udder width, udder circumference, udder volume, teat length, teat width, teat circumference, distance between the teats and teat height from the ground of sheep were measured in centimetres (cm) weekly for 12 weeks of lactation, commencing from Day 4 postpartum. Parity highly influenced (P < 0.05) udder traits, except udder volume (P > 0.05). The udder length, width and circumference were higher (P < 0.05) in Parity-3 ewes than Parity-1 and -2 ewes. A similar trend was shown for teat length, width and circumference. Parity had no effect (P > 0.05) on udder volume, but significantly (P > 0.05) affected distance between the teats and teat height from the ground. With the exception of udder volume, all traits peaked by the 3rd week of lactation, and gradually declined thereafter. Milk yield and milk weight peaked by the 3rd week postpartum and these were higher for ewes in Parity 3. Milk yield and milk weight declined faster in ewes in Parities 1 and 2 than they did in Parity-3 ewes (P < 0.05) as lactation length increased. In regard to milk composition, moisture, protein and fat, but not total solid, solid-not-fat and lactose, were greater (P < 0.05) in Parity-3 ewes both at peak milk yield (3rd week of lactation) and end of lactation. From these findings, we conclude that parity type plays a significant role in influencing udder traits, milk yield and milk quality in ewes.
