Relationship between meat colour and feed efficiency in pigs

Data from Danish Progeny Testing Stations were used to investigate the relationship between the colour of meat and feed efficiency in pigs. For groups slaughtered during the summer there was a highly significant correlation. As the amount of feed consumed per unit live-weight gain declined so the meat became paler. For groups slaughtered in winter and for data pooled over the whole year, there was no significant correlation. Possible explanations of these findings are discussed.

ABSTRACTThe Milk Marketing Board beef shape (BS) score for a sire is derived from the beef conformation assessments made during the routine inspection of his first lactation daughters in the Dairy Progeny Testing Scheme. The trial compared the scores for seven Friesian/Holstein sires with the beef characteristics of their steer progeny. Two groups of cattle, 189 in total, all out of Friesian dams, were used in the trial. The dams were assessed for BS. The cattle were reared on a standard grass/cereal system designed to achieve an overall target live-weight gain of 0·85 kg/day and slaughtered at 530 kg live weight. An assessment of BS was made at seven points during the lifetime of each animal. Carcass classification and assessment together with dissection of the shin joint was undertaken by the Meat and Livestock Commission. In addition to this, 40 carcasses representing high and low BS scores were taken for full dissection of the left side.The BS score of the dam had no significant effect on the score of the calf at any point during its life. The relationship between the sire BS score and the calf score did not become significant until the calf was 12 months old (P < 0·01) and was still significant immediately prior to the slaughter of the calf (P < 0·05). Carcass conformation scores showed highly significant progeny group differences (P < 0·001). The regression of the sire progeny group means, corrected for estimated proportion of subcutaneous fat, on the sire BS scores was significant (P < 0·001). The carcasses in the high BS score group had a significantly greater weight of lean than those in the low BS score group.

SUMMARYIndonesian Ongole and swamp buffalo bulls that had previously been given 0, 1·2, 2·4, 3·6 or 4·8 kg/head/day rice bran plus ad libitum elephant grass were slaughtered after 161 days feeding. Abdominal depot fat, full and empty reticulo-rumen and cold carcass weights were recorded. Various carcass variables were measured and the 9–10–11 rib joints were dissected into bone, muscle and fat. Carcass gross energy was calculated from rib-fat content using previously determined regression equations. Feed efficiency was expressed in terms of the ratios of live-weight gain or carcass-energy accretion to metabolizable energy available for growth.Increasing supplementation with rice bran resulted in larger abdominal fat depots, higher dressing percentages, increased carcass fatness (and hence carcass gross energy) and improved rib muscle to bone ratios. Carcass conformation was unaffected by dietary treatment. When feed efficiency was expressed per unit live-weight gain, there was a decrease with increasing rice-bran feeding. Feed efficiency, expressed per unit of carcass energy accretion, improved with rice-bran supplementation and was generally higher in buffalo than in Ongole bulls. Dietary and species differences in feed efficiency could be primarily explained by the differential energy cost of deposition of, and the availability of energy from, carcass protein and lipid.

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of growth and development intensity in Holstein replacement heifers on economically important animal traits. The intensity of growth was assessed by the average live weight gain until 14 months of age. In addition, live weight and height at the sacrum at 14 months of age were analysed as indicators of growth and development when evaluating the length of productive life. The milk yield of first-calvers increased as the average daily live weight gain in the rearing period increased. An opposite tendency was recorded for cows in their second and third lactation and the total production also decreased with a higher growth rate of heifers. The analysis of the relationship between growth rate and the following reproduction traits revealed that the increased average daily live weight gain to 14 months was subsequently associated with reduced reproduction efficiency in cows. The differences between the groups with the lowest and the highest average live weight gains in the number of days open in the first and second calving interval were 26.78 and 17.47 days, respectively. This tendency was also confirmed in the other reproduction traits analysed. Productive life was significantly longer in animals with the lowest intensity of growth and development compared to the other groups (2.17 to 5.49 months, <i>P</i> < 0.01).

SUMMARYTwo experiments were conducted to study the effect of type of cereal and time of weaning on the performance and voluntary intake of lambs.In the first experiment 20 early-weaned entire male lambs were given diets ad libitum during the fattening period from 15 to 40 kg live weight. The diets were based on either kibbled maize or rolled barley. A high feed efficiency and growth rate were achieved with both diets and differences between them were not statistically significant. The growth rates were 428 and 430 g/day. The cold carcass weights at 40 kg live weight were 19·0 and 19·9 kg and the conversion ratios of dry matter to live-weight gain were 2·33 and 2·22 for the rolled barley and kibbled maize diets respectively.In the second experiment a comparison was made of the performance of 36 sets of twin lambs, one of each set being weaned at either 6, 13 or 20 weeks of age and the other being left to suck the ewe outdoors. The lambs weaned at 6 weeks had better conversions of dry matter to live-weight gain than lambs weaned at 13 and 20 weeks. The respective conversions of dry matter to live-weight gain were 3·36, 5·64 and 5·52. The lambs weaned at either 13 or 20 weeks had a greater weight at weaning, a greater growth check at weaning and a lower rate of feed intake.

SUMMARYGrazing and stall-feeding experiments were conducted to examine the effect of giving different amounts of cereal-protein concentrate with grass on the live-weight gain of cattle initially 6 months of age. The effect of level of concentrate on grass intake was also studied in the indoor trial. Experiment 1 took place at pasture, with two stocking rates (high and low) and three levels of supplementation at each stocking rate. The response to supplementation, and rate of live-weight gain by the unsupplemented groups was similar at both stocking rates for a 101-day period from late April to mid-August. The results are discussed in relation to other pasture supplementation experiments, and to those obtained in the indoor experiment. Experiment 2 (stall-feeding) consisted of five levels of concentrate feeding from zero to 100% of the diet. There was little increase in total intake as the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased, and the relationship between grass intake and concentrate intake was rectilinear.Gut fill estimates are presented for each level of concentrate feeding, and results for empty body-weight gain are discussed in relation to live-weight gains. There was a linear increase in weight gain with increasing proportion of concentrate in the diet. Empty body-weight gain is recommended as a less biased assessment of the response of cattle to concentrates given with pasture or forages.

AbstractThe purpose of this work was to investigate the relationship between individual animal performance and production per unit area of land of steers of different potential growth rate under different grazing stocking rates (SR). The analysis involved 160 steers divided equally between two breeds, over 2 years at four SRfor each breed and two replicates for each SR. Thus there werefive steers per replicate. The breeds were purebred Aberdeen Angus (Angus) and 4 Limousin (Limousin). After weaning steers were grazed for 251 days on a pasture dominated by Festuca arundinacea. Given that equal SR does not equate to equal treament for breeds characterized to be of different size and rate of growth at a given age, the analysis was undertaken on the basis of three categories of metabolic body size per ha (S). The variables analysed were individual live-weight gain (final minus initial weight, kg), relative individual live-weight gain (logefinal weight - loge initial weight) and production (kg/ha). A mixed model was used to examine effects of breed, S, year and the interactions between these variables. In general significant (P < 0·05) differences were found for all factors of classification and interactions. Independent linear regressions were calculated for each breed between absolute live-weight gain, relative live-weight gain, and production on S. It was concluded that there was a genotype × environment interaction, with the Angus breed tending to show a higher production per unit area than the Limousin, especially at high levels of S when scarcity of forage was apparent. Nevertheless Limousin steers had higher absolute individual performance than the Angus. The higher production of the smaller breed may be explained by a higher SR at a given S level and also by its higher relative individual live-weight gain in relation to that of the larger breed. The data were coded to use Mott's model to study the relationship between absolute performance (kg) and production (kg/ha). However this model ignores the existing interaction involving breeds.

Calliandra calothyrsus is a tree legume native to Mexico and Central America. The species has attracted considerable attention for its capacity to produce both fuelwood and foliage for either green manure or fodder. Its high content of proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins) and associated low digestibility has, however, limited its use as a feed for ruminants, and there is also a widespread perception that wilting the leaves further reduces their nutritive value. Nevertheless, there has been increasing uptake of calliandra as fodder in certain regions, notably the Central Highlands of Kenya. The present study, conducted in Embu, Kenya, investigated effects of provenance, wilting, cutting frequency and seasonal variation both in the laboratory (in vitro digestibility, crude protein, neutral detergent fibre, extractable and bound proanthocyanidins) and in on-station animal production trials with growing lambs and lactating goats. The local Kenyan landrace of calliandra (Embu) and a closely-related Guatemalan provenance (Patulul) were found to be significantly different, and superior, to a provenance from Nicaragua (San Ramón) in most of the laboratory traits measured, as well as in animal production and feed efficiency. Cutting frequency had no important effect on quality; and although all quality traits displayed seasonal variation there was little discernible pattern to this variation. Wilting had a much less negative effect than expected, and for lambs fed calliandra as a supplement to a low quality basal feed (maize stover), wilting was actually found to give higher live-weight gain and feed efficiency. Conversely, with a high quality basal diet (Napier grass) wilting enhanced intake but not live-weight gain, so feed efficiency was greater for fresh material. The difference between fresh and wilted leaves was not great enough to justify the current widespread recommendation that calliandra should always be fed fresh.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of aloe vera extract (w/v) on growth performance of broiler. The present study explored the potentials of medicinal plants Aloe barbedensis mixture in broiler performance. For this purpose, 120 day old chicks were randomly assigned into five treatment groups, namely T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4. Each treatment group contained 24 chicks. The chicks were purchased from a local chick hatchery named Nourish Poultry & Hatchery Ltd. Birds were brooded up to 10 days and then reared in separate flock for 35 days in an open sided house. Each treatment group was further replicated into three sub-groups and each contained eight birds. Experimental birds in T1, T2, T3 and T4 were provided with aloe vera extract (w/v) @ 05, 10, 15 and 20 ml per liter of drinking water while T0 was maintained as control group. Relevant data were recorded throughout the experimental period and subjected to statistical analysis. The data on growth parameters (body weight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, water intake) and feed cost and gross return per broiler were evaluated. The results of the study revealed that the aloe vera supplemented groups showed higher live weight gain than untreated group. Aloe vera supplemented groups showed more live weight gain in the terminal stages of the experiment. Aloe vera (w/v) extract supplemented groups performed the best feed efficiency. The live weight gain and feed efficiency were significantly (P<0.05) better in the broilers provided water containing 15 ml/L aloe vera aqueous extract. Water intake, feed intake and abdominal fat deposition of broilers given aloe extract in drinking water were not different among each other. So, 15 ml/L aloe vera aqueous extract may be given to the broilers drinking water.Asian J. Med. Biol. Res. March 2017, 3(1): 120-126

SummaryLive-weight gain of beef cattle grazing all-grass or grass-clover pastures, details of which have been reported previously, was significantly (P < 0·01) correlated with pasture growth rate, but not with pasture dry matter on offer (either total or green), or with dietary-energy concentration. From ideas generated from the relationship between live-weight gain and pasture growth rate, and using intake values measured from the number and size of prehension bites, it is shown how high live-weight gain for measured dietary-energy concentration could be explained by differential contribution to digestibility and voluntary intake from pasture new growth.
